HOW TO: Give every player back their photos in 32-team ROM

I've always preferred working in the 30-team ROM since it meant that every player got to have a photo, but there are obviously other reasons one would prefer the 32-team ROM. Unfortunately the main 32-Team version floating around seemed to be missing the photos for all but the starting lineup. Why was this? ...was the question. Turns out they were just erased.

Yeah, all those 0's is bad.

For those interested in what the columns mean.
In the case of the first row:

0012 & 0284 - The pointer for the player photo.
0000 - The hex number coinciding with each player's position in the roster.

There are some 0's and stuff after the 26th player, so the columns get offset a bit with each new team.

Step 4.

Aaaand technically you're done. Now go make your game!

The photos for all 26 possible players on all 32 teams were already there in the ROM. Just that now you can actually use them again!

Bonus Step 5.
The other thing to note is that this particular text block will arrange the players in the order that they appear in NOSE from the starting goalie [0000] to the last D-man [0019]

If you want to have the starting lineup appear first followed by the other peons, you will need to figure out where the players appear in the order in NOSE and set the first six players to:
0000 [the Starting goalie always goes first, and appears last in the player scrolling]
Follow up with the five skaters in your starting lineup, counting where they are in the order and using the corresponding hex number to their roster spot. [1st is 0000, 15th is 000E, 20th is 0013, etc] Be sure that your player photos are imported in the same order that you are placing them in the hex code.
Finish the team up with the remaining players until everyone from 0000 to 0019 has made it into the roster somewhere.

Pair this up with the hack to set how many players you display on the main menu and the Ron Barr pre-game screen, as well as the Winnipeg freeze bug fix, shake well and enjoy.

You know, I figured that must have been the case, but I found it odd that literally everyone was using the version where all but the starting six had their pointers deleted and were stuck with default lefty/righty as their photos. And I usually download every different ROM I can find on here, if even just to see what others are doing, but I couldn't find one that had all the photos intact.

Obviously I just never came across the right thread, [and since I wasn't the only one, if you want to link it here I can reference it too] but in that case this can just be for restoring those missing cards on the games all you folks have already completed while using the inferior version.

I have a question that I'm not sure where to ask, but this seems as good a place as any. I've been importing player photos, one at a time, in TileMolester. Does anyone ahve any tricks or tips to make this easier?

I was thinking, I ought to be able to export all the images as a contact sheet, and import that one contact sheet. Would jsut need to setup the contact sheet and pointers to both work in harmony towards this goal. But perhaps someone else has already done this. Or something better!

I don't know about a contact sheet, I just know that those ten bytes between pictures is a pain for importing.

Not sure if there is something better, but the method I've settled on involves opening two files in TM and set to Go To Offset on relative mode of Hex 36A.

Then I use one as my scrap file [usually just a previous save] and set the window size to 6x128 tiles. Since my photoshop file of all of the player photos is arranged as a giant cube so I can edit all of them at the same time, I just import it, usually one team at a time to make sure they look good.

Then it's really just a matter of resizing it to 6x6 and mashing page Down, ctrl c, click [next window], F5, ctrl v, click [first window] a bunch of times until you get to the end and it's time to import the next team. I suppose a keyboard macro might be a good idea here, but the paranoid control freak in me likes to observe the entire process in case I need to make changes.

Ideally it might also be possible to set up a photoshop action that could arrange the photos and compensate for the pointer info, but so far that feels like a self check-out at the grocery store. Automation that feels like more work than just doing it the old way.

Bonus Step 5.
The other thing to note is that this particular text block will arrange the players in the order that they appear in NOSE from the starting goalie [0000] to the last D-man [0019]

If you want to have the starting lineup appear first followed by the other peons, you will need to figure out where the players appear in the order in NOSE and set the first six players to:
0000 [the Starting goalie always goes first, and appears last in the player scrolling]
Follow up with the five skaters in your starting lineup, counting where they are in the order and using the corresponding hex number to their roster spot. [1st is 0000, 15th is 000E, 20th is 0013, etc] Be sure that your player photos are imported in the same order that you are placing them in the hex code.
Finish the team up with the remaining players until everyone from 0000 to 0019 has made it into the roster somewhere.

Pair this up with the hack to set how many players you display on the main menu and the Ron Barr pre-game screen, as well as the Winnipeg freeze bug fix, shake well and enjoy.

It's a grid. if you don't see 040e on the left column, you need to try each byte in the row to find it. 0400, 0401...0409, 040A...040E...

I've often wondered if you could jam all the palette data at the end like the banners...Then you could have one continuous strip of players. But that would require messing with the header too and making it absurdly large.

I just labeled all my portraits by team, then according to the order listed in Nose from 0-26, followed by their name. I could see how a contact sheet might work, but that's a fair bit of setup in itself.

I hate the portraits. They're so tedious!

Thanks guys. I’m both relieved and depressed to hear that there doesn’t seem to be any better way of doing it. This still leaves me thinking about a couple things…

What are these headers? Other than being 10 bytes, I have no concept as to what they are, if they can be safely moved, etc.

Further to Smoz’s advice, I usually rely on the “Go To” function in my Hex Editor, just typing in 0x040E, and then looking around at where it sent me, to make sure it the right place.
