@bcrt2000 Change 0x180B0 from 0001 to 0002. This will cause the code that forces a playoff series to continue in head to head mode to apply to series that started in head to head mode. Series started

OK, I haven't really been discussion 25–26 publicly recently, but it's been on my mind. Here is the answer to the question. tldr; I might not release a v25–26, and almost certainly not anytime so

This is absolutely excellent. Congrats for the work!

It would be great as a next step to have a sound pack with original goal horns and arena songs in MIDI format.

But I assume only NHL96 had a custom goal horn system?

Thanks man!

That sound work is way beyond my knowledge base. Would be happy to team-up with someone who wanted to take on sound and music tasks! I'd personally love to have the Sega CD sounds brought in.

Hi Adam,

Thank you for the ROMs you provide; they make our Saturday nights awesome from time to time!

Is there any way you could improve the passing for one-timers? When we play as teammates, it often feels like the game ignores Player 2, even if they are better positioned in front of the goal than me (Player 1). Frequently, when trying to pass to Player 2, the game prioritizes Player 1, even if Player 1 is poorly positioned.

Best regards, jdc

Hey @jdc, thanks for writing in!

Can you tell me a bit more about what you are experiencing with one-timers, I am not sure that I understand. What do you mean by "the game ignores Player 2"? Right upfront, I'll say that this is definitely not something I can address this season, and not highly likely I can address it at all, but still I am always curious to know. You never know what the future brings.

When I cross the blue line with the puck and my teammate is somewhere in front of the goal, 8 times out of 10 the pass goes to another player, often back to some defender. If I were playing alone, it would pass to the guy standing in front of the goal for a one timer. It’s like the game favors/prioritizes me as Player 1 when I try to pass, regardless of whether I aim the pass to the right with the controller—the pass can go diagonally backward to the right to a player who’s not in position.

This doesn’t happen in the SNES version. Or at the very least, it happens far less often there.

And it’s the same issue when starting an attack from our own zone. If I try to pass straight up where my teammate is skating, the system chooses to pass up-left, up-right, or laterally, as long as it results in me keeping the puck. It seems like Genesis NHL '94 is happy as long as I retain possession. So, unfortunately, we usually have to play the SNES version to have fun; otherwise, my teammate has to resort to dirty hits or goalie interference tactics.

Sometimes we switch so my friend gets Player 1 (blue star), and I play as Player 2, using the dirty hits tactics.
And it’s the same whether we’re playing Netplay or sitting on the same couch.

I can make a video of it someday. We get to play about five times a year since we’re two old farts and have other stuff going on in life.
Best regards, jdc

Hey @AdamCatalyst, you think you'll be updating UHC to the Mammoth for your '25 rom or will you start doing that with '26?

  • Author

@Jpark '26. I'm currently having a very difficult time getting the drawing right. Even if it were ready in time, they only played as UHC this year, so '26.

  • Author

@jdc thanks for explaining! that is definitely beyond what I would know how to address right now, but it anyone else has any insights, please do share.

Gotcha. Hope you can figure out the drawing. If I could help I would. Looking forward to your '26 release.

Stupid minor thing but was curious, any plan to put a little camera looking thing in the nets?

  • Author

@SNOHBAWL There already is a dark pixel to represent the current camera setup. A whole single pixel! lol. No plans to go beyond that single pixel. I spent a lot of time on the nets a year or two ago, and I'm in a good place with letting them be.

Final version 3.7 is out! Thank-you everyone who played, and everyone who left a comment this season. Hopefully your team faired better than my perpetually disappointing Leafs. Please do keep those bug reports and suggestions coming. I do seriously consider it all.

cheers,

Awesome job. Hadn't really gotten into the rom hacks on here until this year but I'm glad I did. Play it almost every day. Can't wait to see the Mammoth in it next year.

As for the actual team I like. Sabres fan here. That should say enough 🤣

@SNOHBAWL We both have lots to reflect on this summer. :)

At least you guys get a fun regular season out of it lol. Pretty crazy that the Sabres have more playoff series wins since the lockout than the Leafs and haven't made the playoffs in 14 years

Actually if it's okay with you Adam, I think I'm going to edit your game to make the default match up Winnipeg vs Washington. I know that it's supposed to be the teams that made the Finals, but aside from normally using the Jets anyway, I'll just justify it as going with the top Regular Season teams, rather than have to look at those dumb Panthers for another year.

As the Romanians would say, "Treabă excelentă!"

lol - that will have the added effect of proving that the WPG WSH crash condition has been avoided.

You know what? I hadn't thought of that, but you are absolutely right.

@towlBwan_knalB I finally got the error that you have been reporting! This is good, gives me more insight. You seem to have a unique knack for triggering this crash. Would you be willing and able to privately test out a potential fix?

Surprised I hadn't mentioned this before, but I was curious. I tend to play my mods with a straight upscaled emulation so I like to keep my visuals clearly geared towards that, but you have things like checker dithering on some of your team banners like for Colorado or Seattle.

Question: Did you have an intended screen filter like scan lines or NTSC emulation to blur the colours together? Or is the intention just to rely on what blending occurs in the eye and additional filter preferences are left to the user, but not geared towards.

  • Author

That's a good question. No screen filters are intended, nor do I use them myself. My primary goal is to make it look good on a modern flat panel TV in "game" mode, so minimal post-processing. To that end, I've softened the edges of some elements, and tried to shade depth with less reliance on screen blurring. That being said, yeah, I'm obviously relying on optical blurring for those checkerboard dithered banners. It's a pretty selfish set of compromises. I know my TV is well calibrated, but it's a TV and not a Monitor, so there is some image post-processing. I want it to look good from playing distance in my living room. I do try to be mindful of how certain things might look on a CRT, and avoid some visual flourishes which would look too mushy on a CRT.

When we do a new playoffs or 7 game playoffs as two teammates, the 2nd round/next game switches to 2 head to head.

Is it a known issue?

Oh! I’ve never even tried that, so I wouldn’t know. Will see if I can recreate this error in the original first, than my hack second. I’ll @ you here if I have any questions, or can give you any answer.

Also, thanks for playing!

Yeah, unfortunately that's just an oversight that was coded into the original game. Even when using the unmodified version of NHL'94, your options are to only play one or two player in the playoffs [even with 4 Way Play hooked up] and the continue option will default to Single Player or Two-Player VS mode depending on what you start out with.

And while it makes sense for the menu to skip over the teams on the Continue Playoffs option, it's a little odd that it also skips over the number of players because sometimes your friend has to go home for dinner, and now you're stuck waiting until the next day after school to play again, but then you can't because he has band practice, so you try to play the next day, but you still can't because he has to go straight home after school because his mom is taking him to the mall to buy new shoes and since you can't finish the playoffs without him you start getting impatient and want to start a new single player playoffs and your friend finds out and gets mad at you and you have a big fight and he doesn't want to be your friend anymore and stops talking to you even though you remember that he never returned your copy of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, but he'd probably just break it if he finds out you wanted it back anyway, and he moves away that summer so forget it, but then your cousins come to visit and you decide to play a team-mates playoff series, but find out after the first game that you can only play two-Player Versus mode after the first game for some inexplicable reason and it dawns on you that you got into a big fight over nothing, but it doesn't haunt you to this day.

Woah, I had no idea! Can we change this? I mean, of course we can! But how? At what cost? Will take a look…

That I lost a friend over this?... I mean... just hypothetically speaking....

That's a good question. Trio of questions I suppose. One might think it is just a matter of flipping whatever bit in the menu code that says it should skip over that row, but it's never as easy as that right.

If there is a short term fix to this, amazing. It's one of the reasons why I prefer NHL95 playoff mode over 94, and why I want to try to bring over the side select screen from 95 to 94 as I get more into disassembling 94 & 95 later in the year.
