December 6, 2025Dec 6 Author comment_213173 Maybe? It might depend on what level of roster updating you are looking to do. NOSE is the tool for editing everything Team/Player data related. If you need, the whole resource on that program is here https://forum.nhl94.com/index.php?/forum/18-nose/ But one thing you can't do in that tool is edit the player pictures. That can be a bit of work, however, it almost sounds like you're not going to want to worry about that as you could very well be changing players on a near daily basis if you start accounting for up-and-down fourth liners and healthy scratches. This isn't so much of a big deal with some of the other ROMs on this site as a lot of them only feature pictures of the top line, but we are using the full team pictures mod and that can get a bit messy if you start changing your 1st line or looking at the player cards screen. Although, given that NHL95 couldn't do that, maybe this isn't a big deal? Report

December 7, 2025Dec 7 comment_213193 So not sure if this is just me but wanted to ask. I'm able to initially edit my lines the way I want and (seemingly) save them to use during a game. However, when I go to load them again for the next game, it loads some odd combination of lines (some F are put in on D and vice versa) that is roughly 50% of what I set them to. This occurred on v1.0 then just tried again with v1.12, via OpenEmu on a 2023 Mac Pro. Report

December 7, 2025Dec 7 comment_213195 Oh and one other thing- CBJ road unis are not correct; they appear to be the same as Carolina's Report
December 7, 2025Dec 7 Author comment_213196 Ah bollocks. I had fixed the CBJ mistake in the upcoming wide screen update, but forgot to save the correction in the standard version. Quickly fixed and updated the main post. As for the line saving function, this was already noted in the main post notes. I've included an option to play any player at any position. This would be most common in a case where a team uses a 4F/1D lineup on the PP, less common these days where some players would shift at various points in their career or during a game depending on how the coach was adapting to specific on-ice situations. The problem with the PA³ mod is that it conflicts with the line saving data. Admittedly I never remember to save lines and will always just edit them every time I don't just use the default, so I tend to forget about this drawback. Now, I coincidentally came here to look up something. If i can only remember what that was... Report
December 8, 2025Dec 8 comment_213203 @von Ozbourne Do you think we could try a different approach to any player any position? Could we try identifying the bits that checks for the D/F/G condition, and only check for the G condition? Happy to see you guys sharing your knowledge. I introduced an old friend who was totally unaware of the hacking scene this weekend. He was blown away. December 9, 2025Dec 9 Author comment_213210 @AdamCatalyst That might be an idea... To be fair the only thing I know was from this thread. Although I suppose I also know from a couple of hacks including the numerous attempts at solving the Winnipeg freeze bug, that a "6002" is what you use when you don't want the code to do a thing. But much like how an early freeze bug fix just nuked all of the save data including that which gave you the ability to play the playoff mode, it might be possible to take a more surgical approach. I will note that the current method is kind of fun in that you can have coaches/managers in the game, listed in the roster, but by making them "Forwards", they will only show up in the Main Menu roll call or Player Card screen and not be eligible in the Edit Lines screen even if you decide to assign them to the extra attacker roll. I've used this twice already, but I understand that I may be in the minority on that. Report

SIDE TRACK incoming So... years ago when I was modding FIFA International Soccer using the old school blunt force methods from these parts (think BEFORE NOSE etc) I came across some entries in the roster data that was for the team managers. They didn't show up in the roster scroll during squad edits, but I recall changing some of the data and they'd be referenced ingame. I wish I could remember exactly how it was done, but I think it was similar to this hack of switching the bytes to make F into D etc. Report

I was curious about that actually. I don't use handhelds so I can't test that. And my hardware option is basically just an emulation box which can be a bit more forgiving. I might take a look at a patch, but given how many changes I'd made to get all of the aspects of the wide mode to look right, it might just be easier to just update the regular mode as a separate standalone version. I can get on that in next few days while I'm dual screening some holiday tournaments. NHL 2026 - 94 Edition v2.21.bin Report

I myself play NHL94 on tablets and use a different emulator than Retroarch. Assuming you use a Android device I guess in the meantime you could try this Rom with a different emulator? I personally use the Emulator called EmuMD XL by Pentawire for my Sega Genesis Roms. It works well enough for me and the wide-screen versions work just fine on it. I don't know much about Retroarch though it's a fine emulator I bet. I however like the emulator I use better because it's a nice small sized program by comparison. EmuMD XL for just the Genesis games only takes up alittle over only 20Mb of space or so. Fairly recently a Save game feature was finally added to this emulator i use that was for a long time originally missing. Maybe you could try this emulator i had mentioned (or another) if Retroarch isn't working with this wide-screen Rom correctly? Report

Hey there friend. There a few settings you can double check. Go into the retroarch video settings and select the scaling menu. Make sure the aspect ratio setting is at core provided. This way, whichever core (emulator) you're using will be able to select the aspect ratio. Next, exit retroarch to save the configuration change. You can obviously skip this step if if you didn't need to change any setting. Start the game and go into the quick menu, core options, video. Make sure the core provided aspect ratio option is set to auto. That should fix any aspect ratio issues. The only time I'm aware of people really changing the aspect ratio in the retroarch settings is if they are using fancy shader packs with bezels. I've personally never had any issues with Genesis. I've only switched from 4:3 to 8:7 aspect ratios on Nintendo consoles. I hope this helps. Edited December 24, 2025Dec 24 by Snowboo Report

January 1Jan 1 comment_213424 So it’s possible. From the fight ROM page: Other Stuff: One of the important goals of this patch was to make it compatible with ANY NHL94 ROM, including ROM hacks. I was able to add code to expand the ROM to 3MB and beyond by modifying the SRAM code. This allows the patch to be compatible with 32-team ROM hacks (space limitation in the 2MB ROM size). It is also compatible with 30-team ROM hacks. I designed a custom version of the patch that will pull the assets needed from the existing ROM hack and apply the patch, thus keeping any palette swaps and other graphical hacks intact. Also, with the extra space in the ROM now, this opens up the path to other types of hacks and adding sprite and frame animations! The custom ROM author will need to make the necessary changes to the H/F values in order for players to be able to fight. That is up to them on making the changes needed to their rosters. Report
January 2Jan 2 Author comment_213429 Figured I might as well give a heads up on this one. First, since it has been brought to my attention that the "wide screen" patch does cause some issues with certain playing options, I'm in the process of converting all the updates to a "narrow screen" version. Can't promise how soon that will be just yet but it's on the To Do list. Second in chronology, but not necessarily importance, I have taken some time to look into @chaos's amazing fighting update and I now seem to have an idea of how to apply the patch, as well as what it does and does not do. Since chaos is using the NHLPA'93 sprites as the basis for the fighting animations, that does mean that the different Helmet and Stick patches that @Jkline3 and I have created for our mods are not going to match up. This will take a bit of time to rectify, but as a teaser... I'm liking where this is headed. Report

January 4Jan 4 comment_213478 This is what I needed to start my new year off right! Thanks so much for all the hours you guys constantly pour into these things!! Just a couple things I noticed as a hardcore Pens fan and a maniac with just a bit of OCD 🙃...first off, why are the Pens rated so low!? (Kidding!) On a more serious note, it seems like the gold on the home jerseys is more orange than yellow. The colors of the away ones are perfect, but it almost seems off a shade on the black ones, especially on the shoulders. That said, I feel like it really sucks that we're the only team in the league where the real life uniforms don't even come close to what NHL 94 for Genesis offers. Not your issue, I'm just venting! I don't know how much has gone into the actual default lines, but the ROM has Ben Kindel as the 1st line LW. He's played almost exclusively center all season. So (without injuries, obviously) it should be Rakell-Crosby-Rust, Mantha-Malkin-Brazeau, and Kindel is the 3rd line center. Also, as I was setting up a few random games, it seems like Anaheim's away uniforms are at least a couple years behind. They still have the black shoulders and pants that they quit wearing in 2024. And they're wearing black helmets with the home uniforms, instead of the obnoxious orange ones they actually wear. I don't say any of this to be critical in the least! Just trying to bring some stuff to light, since I know you sink so many hours into this thing being modern and up-to-date. And it's impossible for you to have a hardcore spotlight on 32 teams, as we all do with our own teams. Report
January 6Jan 6 comment_213507 I'm not going to speak to the graphics side of things (von Oz is FAR more capable) other than it's difficult to get some colors to play nice than others based on the available options. Yellows, and oranges to a lesser degree, have always been very challenging to me to get enough contrast to make noticeable in-game. What device you are using also makes a big difference. Sometimes things look great on my laptop only to look fluorescent on my TV. Overall ratings are based on consensus preseason point projections from 4 sources. They're just there for show as they don't factor into gameplay at all. If I recall correctly, Rakell was injured about the time that I was determining lines and whatever line chart I was using had Kindel at wing. I do my best to account for short-term injuries when building the lines but it's such a moving target and just not possible (while remaining gainfully employed) to have that good of an understanding of each team's "ideal" depth chart. To be honest, creating lines is my least favorite part of building a ROM because every change seems to create 2 more, and so on, and so on... I did let my Left Wing Lock subscription expire which has always been my best source for confirming what % of time a player plays a particular position. May consider re-upping that before the next update. Report
January 7Jan 7 Author comment_213510 Okay time for an update. What to expect: Very unglamourously expanded 3MB ROM. So much of the custom art and some options needed to be edited even though you might not be able to tell. I think I got everything, but let me know if something weird pops up. More obviously, some teams have had their uniforms belatedly updated So they should more closely resemble this season's changes within 16-bit limits. Some on-ice logos got an update, partly due to this as well. This update is still only available in "wide screen" mode. Additional menu option. And, I didn't get any new screen shots, so I'm just going to put this here. NHL 2026 - 94 Edition v3.0.bin Report
