@von Ozbourne Sometimes the game can crash immediately before the PowerPlay clock initializes. This happens most often when multiple players receive penalties at the exact same moment, or are released

Sorry guys I'm a bit of an idiot with this stuff, what does 'wide screen mode' indicate?

Will this not look properly if I put it on an everdrive and play on a 4:3 CRT?

Am I supposed to be impressed with Reaves' ONE fight last year?

Would appreciate genuine feedback on how these play out in-game because this was rushed to take advantage of @chaos amazing work. Parading around like an ass isn't it. You only show up around here to s**t on everything.

There's this thing called NOSE where you can edit the ratings to your little heart's desire. Learn how to use it.

Seriously, stop embarrassing yourself.

tony twist and george laraque never had over a 160 PIMS in one nhl season, what would you give them? a 42?

The wonderful people here hacked the game and changed the display mode the actual gameplay outputs at. The original game stretched the picture while playing. Here are before and after screenshots.

The widescreen version doesn't stretch the image across a 4:3 aspect ratio. You get to see more of the ice this way.

Personally, I really liked it at first, but now I feel it kind of throws off the viewing angle. I'm curious if the original game developers ever spoke about choosing between the different display modes.

160 is a pretty lofty goal when you're only getting 5 minutes of ice time a night.

Just had a great fight Domi vs Bennett. Everything is working great.

Okay time for an update.

What to expect:

  • Very unglamourously expanded 3MB ROM.
  • So much of the custom art and some options needed to be edited even though you might not be able to tell.
  • I think I got everything, but let me know if something weird pops up.
  • More obviously, some teams have had their uniforms belatedly updated
  • So they should more closely resemble this season's changes within 16-bit limits.
  • Some on-ice logos got an update, partly due to this as well.
  • This update is still only available in "wide screen" mode.
  • Additional menu option.
  • And,

I didn't get any new screen shots, so I'm just going to put this here.

I will admit I am a bit torn on this myself. Typically, since I like the look of square pixels when drawing, I've leaned to having perfectly square pixels in my game viewing as well. But as anyone who has played old games on original hardware will know, developers used a lot of cheats and tricks that worked with the specific characteristics of CRT displays. In this case, lying to us about the squareness of their pixels.

I don't have an everdrive so I am using emulators for these modded ROMs and using 1:1 view typically for nice square pixels. [I should probably look into getting some better shaders] but occasionally I have to remind myself that the original game had 4:3 pixels. You just didn't notice because of the slight anti-aliasing of an RF switch signal and scan lines. And because you were just having too much fun playing the game to think about stuff like that at the time.

Anyway, I suppose I do plan on trying to get some of the updates into a "standard view" version, but it's been tricky to find the time to get to that when what free time I do have lately has been spent getting just one version working.

Any tips on how to start a fight?  I kept trying to check guys and provoke a guy but couldn't get to engage.  I'd love to try to fight on this new update!  :-)

Try playing in arcade mode. Even though ratings were boosted for the standard version there was only a fight approximately every 5 games in the NHL last season. Since most of the "fighters" never leave the bench, even with line changes on, most players aren't looking to engage. Also check your bench to replace the skilled players with players with higher H/F ratings.

If you're playing with Detroit, they are one of the more docile teams with only 9 fights in total last year and 4 so far this year at last count.

Ahh that explains it!  Yes I'm playing with Detroit which are a bunch of finesse players.  But I haven't lost a game yet with them!  Okay I'll try arcade mode and will also pick a team that has a bruiser.  Hmm?  I'm thinking my other favorite team....Ottawa with Brady Tkachuk.  Now that boy can fight!  :-)

Unfortunately the reality is that on average, players in 2026 are much less likely [or competent] at dropping the gloves than at any point since the 1960s. Although, without looking up game sheets because I don't care that much, I might wager that those earlier numbers were possibly a case of many pugilists being assessed "roughing" minors instead.

Either way, I think as a whole, Nashville might be the team that has the most players that meet the threshold of "will engage in a fight". Just a shame that that would require you to play as Nashville.

In arcade mode, anyone but players with a 0 fighting rating will fight. I think players with a 42+ can start a fight (so you can have a 42 vs 14 fight, but not a 28 vs 28).

In regular "On" mode, only players with I think a 71+ fighting rating can start a fight, and only players with a 42+ can participate in a fight.

So you need to adjust your lineups to include players with the appropriate fighting ratings.

After that, you just need to check a lot in order to trigger a fight. Checking after the whistle counts, too, so rack em up during stoppages.

@von Ozbourne love the work done here!  I was poking around the ROM and other topics here, and was struggling to find the hex offset for the startup/selection home/away banner colors for this rom.  When you have time, can you point me to a topic or pop that in here?

Thanks so much!

Close, in On mode 71+ start a fight, players 14 and above can participate. Also, they have to have a few Chks For, and the total game checks need to be around 30, so yes, checking after the whistle will bump these numbers up

I adore this damn game. Downloaded it yesterday and am hooked. Next logical step is getting a season going and I know 94 doesn't have that function. What are the odds of NHL 95 getting the modern update treatment?

Thanks eh.

I actually don't remember which thread has the information on that here.
But the offset in dec is 1907466, size is 1024 bytes.

Thanks man.

Actually I'd say the odds are pretty good. Although not from me.

@UltraMagnus is in the process of making NHL 95 based mods for every season, although I can't speak for him on when he'll get to the current season, other than that it does take time to do all the research and images. Even more if your spare time is at a premium.

Perfect, thanks so much!

Thanks for this release/update, super excited to have the fighting hack added. I do agree with earlier mentions about the aspect ratio (and related camera view), I prefer the original. Cheers!

Logged in after many years to post and say thank you for this -- had a blast playing it. Put it on the big TV and the fighting in 94 blew my mind.  What an exciting time.  All who are involved in making this project go this far, kudos beyond belief.  Thank you for the fun!

Due to popular demand?

Finally cleaned up my "default ROM" for standard screen resolution, so it was short work copy/pasting all of the data for the 2026 season mod. This one should be identical to the "wide screen" version in every way other than using the original resolution during game play.

ROM in the original post.

I use Retroarch to play all my oldest systems and use the shaders that come with it, except for Genesis. There is a guy on YouTube called Retro Crisis that makes shaders. He has the best Genesis shader that I've seen anywhere. To my eyes, it perfectly blends the waterfall in sonic, but also you don't get any flickering pixels in NHL. He has seperate shaders for flat or curved screens and 720-4K resolutions.

It makes a huge difference. Especially on the genesis, where they relied on the CRT TV to blend the pixels together to expand the colour palette.

I seem to be having an issue with your new standard ROM. The colours are all messed up. The widescreen version displays correctly. I use the Genesis Plus GX core in Retroarch to play. I also tried the PicoDrive core and the same issue happened.

I have this same graphics problem with the Standard Rom. But its on a different emulator. Only other problem I have with the Standard Rom is Anaheim Mighty Ducks during Edit Lines gives a error and a freeze.

The intro screen also shows the year as 20XX!
