2 controllers at the same time, man, that's what I'd do

Have this persistent issue with RetroArch where every time I play a different version I have to update my controls.

If I play with Genesis and save a remap file, I just load that when playing Genesis? If I'm playing SNES, I just load that? Isn't this supposed to work or am I missing something?

I swear I'm not crazy - for this reason - but every time I switch playing one version over the other I have to redo all the binds again and it's maddening.

Having to replug / unplug one every time isn't civilized.

I have trouble with it forgetting my controls sometimes, too. No solution, but props on the thread title 🤣

I have had much difficulty with Retro Arch as well. In my case trying to use their code searching / finding system and doing other tasks within the emulator. There is a lot going on in the front end of Retro Arch and isn't the most user friendly of emulators. I would offer a recommendation for you to try the Ares emulator.

This is what I have been using lately v147. It works very well with Genesis and offers many shaders built in. Notably the Mac version has a good variety of aspect ratios that you can achieve in full screen along with other window / sizing options. Overall I find Ares to be a very well designed emulator and far more user friendly than Retro Arch. Now there are some features that Ares might not have, and it would depend if you need that, but if you're hex editing roms and testing changes one after another it's better to keep your controls consistent. Ares also has a built in memory viewer which is organized in a useful way. On the Mac version I have had some issues actually using the Ares memory viewer as an editor / making changes to bytes but just having it there is very helpful to find codes and see how codes change. Compared to Retro Arch for example there is no memory viewer like there is in Ares and it is not as user friendly. So for a more civilized emulator I highly recommend Ares. And if you use it, please give a review and let me know if there's anything other emulators have that Ares doesn't or does better.

I just run different instances of Retroarch, one for Gens and one for SNES. I do this for different leagues as well, keeps roms/saves separate too.

@clockwise, try this, works for me when swapping between Gens and SNES controllers.
