NHL 95 PC – Hi-Res Mod / Programmer Help Wanted

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I've been experimenting with HOCKEY.EXE from NHL 95 PC and we've made some good progress with a high-resolution gameplay mod.

So far we have managed to:

  • Run the game in 640×400 instead of 320×200

  • Increase the visible gameplay area

  • Display the entire 384px rink width

  • Disable horizontal camera scrolling while keeping vertical scrolling

  • Fix player rendering and the puck off-screen indicator for the larger viewport

  • Get approximately 384×392 of working gameplay

The main things still missing are:

  • Fixing the HUD in 640×400 – score/time currently don't render correctly

  • Ideally making the HUD transparent over the rink

  • Finding a way to zoom/scale the gameplay, because the rink is only 384px wide and leaves unused space in a 640px framebuffer

We have the working modified EXEs and know many of the relevant offsets in HOCKEY.EXE.

If anyone has experience with DOS/x86 reverse engineering, framebuffer/blitting code, or NHL95PC internals, I'd love some help finishing this. I can share all our test builds and findings.

Look at the video enclosed.
