Beta Version 0.2.1

2026 10 06

Please note, this is unfinished beta software. It is stable enough to enjoy, but I'm sure there are still some bugs I have yet to find despite my best efforts. That's where you come in: please report any issues that you find so I can address them ASAP!

New beta updates will be coming out frequently, with a goal of one a week. Be sure to check back to get the latest version.

Known Issues

Unless otherwise noted, all these issues are with EVO mode only, and do not affect Classic mode gameplay.

  • Features: Still not feature complete.

  • Gameplay: Still not balanced, actively being worked on.

  • Fighting matchups need tuning.

  • Flip Pass: May not go far enough.

  • Player Photos: Photos have varying quality and cropping, and are still not finished.

  • Playoffs: Playoffs may corrupt SRAM in some versions of Gens.

  • Difficulty Modes: Classic Mode / '94 League do not actually have different difficulties.

Latest Release

Please do not distribute during this beta testing phase.

Player Manual

Beta version 0.2.1

Here's what you need to know to make the most out of the game.

Main Menu Options

Mode

Exhibition mode replaces the previous Regular Season mode, and a new Practice mode has been added in.

Games / Series Length

You can now choose to play best-of-3/5/7 for Playoffs OR an Exhibition Series. Progress is automatically saved, and you can have both a Playoffs and an Exhibition saved at the same time.

  • If you start an individual Exhibition game it will NOT erase your progress on your saved Exhibition Series.

  • If you start a new Exhibition Series it WILL erase your progress on your saved Exhibition Series.

  • Starting a new Exhibition Series will NOT erase your Playoffs, nor will starting a new Playoff Series erase your Exhibition Series.

League

EVO comes with three Leagues: NHL, International, and NHL '94.

  • You must choose a single League for a Playoffs series.

  • You can have cross-league play for all the other Game Modes.

  • The NHL '94 League is special. It changes some Gameplay parameters to play almost exactly like the original.

Home Team

For Playoffs, you can select any Home team that you like from the selected league. You choose teams individually in EVO, not as a preset matchup.

Visitor Team

For Playoffs, the Visitor Teams available for you to choose from will be constrained by:

  1. The Home Team that you selected.

  2. The Playoff Seeding scheme that you select.

Seeding

EVO allows you to choose different Playoffs seeding schemes to build your Playoff matchups tree. Visitor team availability is limited by this option.

CPU Opponent

EVO allows you to select between five different difficulty modes:

  • Rookie: Slightly easier than default, like catching the CPU on a cold streak.

  • Default: Balanced difficulty.

  • Pro: Slightly more difficult, like catching the CPU on a hot streak.

  • All-Star: Noticeably more difficult with a CPU performance advantage.

  • Superstar: Unapologetically more difficult with CPU having an obvious performance advantage.

Regulation

You can choose 5-on-5, 4-on-4, or 3-on-3 for any Game Mode other than Shootout.

Overtime

You can choose Playoff Style Overtime, or 5-on-5, 4-on-4, 3-on-3, or Progressive OT.

5-on-5 / 4-on-4 / 3-on-3: In a single Exhibition game this is 5 minutes sudden death, in Playoffs or Series this is infinite periods until someone scores.

Progressive: Sudden death with 5 minutes of 5-on-5, followed by 5 minutes of 4-on-4, followed by 5 minutes of 3-on-3, with infinite 3-on-3 periods until someone scores.

Playoff Style: This is only available for single Exhibition games. It continues your game with overtime periods the same length as your regulation periods, with the same default number of players on the ice as your Regulation setting. Infinite periods until someone scores.

Offsides

Offsides in EVO are calculated slightly differently, based on the edges of the blue lines. Furthermore, the blue lines have been moved slightly, providing a slightly larger attack zone and smaller neutral zone.

Icing

Icing in EVO is calculated slightly differently based on the edges of the red line. Furthermore, you cannot change lines after you have iced the puck.

Penalties

You can choose between Standard Length and Half-Length penalties.

Injuries

The option for "Blood" only affects injuries during a Fight.

Controls

Seven different control schemes are available. See "Control Schemes In-Depth" below for full details.

Face-Offs

EVO offers a new Manual Face-off mode.

  • Whoever presses (B) first right BEFORE the Linesman starts to move will obtain possession of the puck, and pass in the direction of their D-Pad.

  • If you press (B) too early before the Linesman starts to move, there is a "cooldown" where you are locked out from trying to win the faceoff until your animation completes.

  • The CPU will try to win the face-off with an adaptive level of skill based on how well you are doing at faceoffs.

  • You can still use the (C) button to charge into the face-off instead.

Fighting

Fighting is here, thanks to the work of Chaos.

  • NHLPA Hockey '93: Chaos' recreation of classic NHLPA fighting.

  • EVO: Different cause, effect, and frequency of fighting. See "Fighting In-Depth" below for details.

Line Changes

Same as the original, with one exception: In Auto mode, you now also have full access to manual line changes.

Goalie Ctrl

Same as the original.

One-Timers

You can now optionally aim your one-timers, just like a regular shot.

Shot Fakes

Optional Shot Fakes are available for the user.

  • Hold (C) to wind up for a shot, then use any of the Passing controls to pass instead.

  • 6-Button only: Hold (C) to wind up for a shot, then tap (Z) to abort the shot and pick up the puck.

  • Note that the CPU cannot perform Shot Fakes. This is currently a User feature only.

Shot Tips

Optional Shot Tipping is available for all players.

  • Skaters in the offensive zone will try to tip/deflect shots into the opposing net, depending on their Offensive Awareness and Stick Handling skills.

  • You can also manually attempt a Shot Tip when using a Controller Scheme that supports Shot Tipping. This is tricky to do, but rewarding to pull off.

Gameplay Options

  • EVO: The new intended modern experience.

  • Classic: The original gameplay you love.

  • Custom: Mix and match settings below for your own preferred gameplay balance.

CPU Players

  • Teammates are better at getting out of your way without going offside.

  • Offensive Awareness affects how good a player is at avoiding going offside.

Defending

  • Stick checks can fail, even with penalties on.

  • Odds of a successful stick check are based on the difference between the defender's Checking attribute and the puck carrier's Stick Handling rating.

Flip Pass

  • All-new Flip Pass mechanic that can be aimed.

Goaltending

In '94, goaltenders are an impervious wall that you have to score around. In EVO mode, goaltenders have a more anthropomorphic frame that always stops pucks, and then five vulnerable save zones with discrete save percentages for each goalie: Five-Hole, Stick Left, Glove Left, Glove Right, Stick Right.

  • Goaltenders are more likely to allow goals on pucks that hit them.

  • Goaltenders are more likely to be in better position to stop the puck.

  • Goaltenders are more likely to anticipate where they need to be.

  • Goaltenders will avoid going into the trapezoid corner areas.

  • Goaltenders will intercept pucks behind the net.

Officiating

EVO mode has countless small changes including:

  • No line change after icing the puck.

  • Time-outs are only available at stoppages and restore ~30 seconds of energy.

Passing

EVO mode offers all-new Passing mechanics, that affects both passers and receivers. See Release Notes for full details.

  • Hold (Y) [(Z) in Alt schemes] while a pass is incoming to queue a one-timer pass.

  • You can use the D-pad to aim a one-timer pass.

  • One-timer passes can be chained in sequence.

Physics

EVO mode provides a more realistic physics model, with adjustments to Gravity, Puck Friction, Puck Bounce on the Ice, Puck Bounce on the Boards, and deflections.

Shooting

EVO mode has completely different shot accuracy & power tuning. See Release Notes for full details.

Skating

EVO mode has different skating acceleration, cornering, energy consumption & recovery, speed, spped burst, and stopping mechanics. See Release Notes for full details.

Settings

Save as Defaults stores your settings. Load Defaults brings them back. Reset Defaults restores settings to league defaults.

Opening Night Edition

First public beta release. Unfinished. Yours to explore and beta test.

Edited by AdamCatalyst
updated for Beta 0.2.1

Testing this out on my Mega Everdrive Pro and having a control issue.

Console: Sega Genesis Model 1 VA4

Controller: 8Bitdo M30 (6 button) with Bluetooth receiver

Issue: NHL 94 EVO reads C button as START. START button has no function.

Details: Tried different control schemes in EVO (3/6 Button EVO Sega, 6 Button EVO Sega, 6 Button Classic), all still have the same issue. Played known working original NHL 94 rom, no control issues. Played known working Mortal Kombat II rom to verify all 6 buttons working, no issues.

Other notes: Powered off system, removed Bluetooth receivers, plugged in original 3 button Genesis controller, verified with known working original NHL 94 rom, verified with controller input rom, loaded NHL 94 EVO and C button had no function.

@Don Johnson thanks! Unfortunately I have no original hardware to test, so I may need your help. I will look at the controller specs again, and see if I can get a new version this weekend. Can I PM you a build to test once I think I have it figured out?

It's not letting you fight after the whistle in EVO mode!?! It had previously worked. OK. I will take a look later today.

This maybe a stupid question but which teams are included in EVO? Is it the teams in the original NHL 94 or is it 32 teams like this current NHL season?

All of the current season teams and rosters are in EVO. But it also includes all the original Nhl94 1990s Era teams (except unfortunately it Does Not have the 2 All-Star teams). Plus EVO also includes some current Olympic/International teams (the Top 6) which include Canada,Czechia (originally it was called the Czech Republic), Finland,Sweden,USA, and even has team Russia as well.

Thanks for the confirmation! Awesome This looks to be one of the best version of 94! I can't wait to test it out later when I'm not busy!

Funny how I not only answered that stupid question because those lengthy release notes that answered many questions for all that don't first look at them, but also that when I mentioned the international teams included I mentioned almost all countries before saying USA (I am a American) and even mention the country of Czechia right after Canada before even the USA.

To be a comedian both Czechia and Russia are more well known by me alot more mostly for a more sterotypical and "Taboo" reason, and I am not referring to Hockey players or Bohemians, or for Russia the Ukraine War by the way! 😁 Thats a stupid joke! I think some will understand the point of this joke.

Well for EVO I'm impressed by alot of these new features and menu options. It's many more than I ever expected! One of my favorite improvements in EVO I Love best right away is how much easier and also much better too it is to make On The Fly Line Changes now in Nhl94.

@RT1977 you are killing me here. 🤣

Thanks so much for the kind words. Yeah, it's kind of weird to say "guys, the killer feature is going to be the main menu" but it kind of is. That being said, figuring out how to get the Line Changes done was literally the cornerstone feature everything was built on. That was the #1 thing on my list.

Thanks and you must have precisely and correctly understood that joke! 😁

Again I really like the new Line Changes feature alot in EVO. Of all things to fix in Nhl94 that was the one I always wanted the most. Other than just maybe someday (even if perhaps a never) to be able to get a full 4 lines to work in this game. I also noticed the added 15 minute period option too. I often usually play 10minute periods mostly. For other things in EVO I will look forward to the tweaks or revisions to anything that still needs work and await any future revision versions you can release of EVO.

Edited by RT1977

After playing with it for a little bit this is one of the best ways to play 94 if not the most innovative way as well! One thing that I would like to see in a future version of EVO if possible is being able to choose the screen type between wide screen and Classic screen size but other than that I'm absolutely blown away with how good this is!

Is it weird that I played most of one game and then had to stop to open the ROM up in TM and HxD to figure out how you made the player photos use double the normal amount of colours?

I am in awe and I hate you for that.

Loving this new rom hack, the amount of work and new features you put in is incredible. Keep up the good work.

I did notice a bug though, skyrim type bug because all I could do was laugh about it. On a delayed penalty the CPU goalie ended up getting a loose puck, and then started spinning around in circles as he slowly made his way across ice to the other net. Past center ice and literally bumping into my goalie without a whistle. All I could do was try to bodycheck the golaie which doesnt work, my players just fell to the ice eachtime obviously. At that point I was hoping to see the CPU goalie spin around mine and score but never happened. Because I couldnt strip the puck off the goalie all I could do was wait for the time to countdown and period to end.

Question, is it possible to add a toggle to be able to bodycheck a goalie? Would make for some fun no penalty arcade style gameplay, would make it interesting with interference penalties or to just run the goalie after a whistle stops play.

P.S. I would be ok if you were biased for the leafs a bit, it hurts to see that 63 rating, GO LEAFS GO!! lol

I've thought about this. There are a number of complications with that, but it is not out of the question. Unfortunately if I try that, it will be much later, there are still so many other systems I need to get way more stable before I could risk something so disruptive. I will put it on my list to investigate, because it might be easier than I think it is in my mind.

DUDE! You and I discussed 16 colour photos a couple years ago and how we could hypothetically pull it off, and I did EXACTLY what we mapped out! The only missing ingredient was figuring out the code that changes the image interpretation from 3bpp to 4bpp. It took way longer sourcing suitable photos for the '94 players, and I am still struggling to colour grade them.

Hi everyone! Just a general thank-you for all the bug reports coming in. I really needed to get your eyes on it, as it has been so helpful, leading me to notice all kinds of things I had been missing. I'm insanely busy until Saturday morning, when I'm looking forward to jumping on this at the crack of dawn.

To be honest, I am finding the gameplay lacklustre right now, and it is the most tricky thing to tune, it has to be done in little increments, because every little thing has a ripple effect on everything else. I just got the final big gameplay changes implemented before going public, which means there is a lot of little gameplay refinements to do. There are also a couple of big features left out of the build that will take months to wrap up. Hopefully I can make that my Christmas present to you.

I will strive to get a build out every week for the foreseeable future. I have the pass lead tuned much better already, but I want to get that controller bug fix packaged with it before I put it out.

I hope you're all having a good week.

P.S. I would be ok if you were biased for the leafs a bit, it hurts to see that 63 rating, GO LEAFS GO!! lol

Thanks man, I really appreciate it.

OK, I have seen that bug before, but ONLY after a whistle. It happens is that the Goalie is compelled to pass, when another piece of code tells him that play is over, no passes for you, and he FREAKS OUT. He is trying to find the safest person to pass to or something, and ends up spinning in circles like a lunatic. But you had that happen during play!?! OK, I will escalate this on my list. Should be easy to patch this weekend, we just need to tell the game that just because the goalie is throwing a hissy fit and thinks he is passing, blow the whistle regardless. Once I put that in, I can investigate why he throws fits in the first place, and fix the underlying problem.

Sorry, I am not working on body checking a goalie, just because I don't have the patience to draw the sprites for that etc. If someone else pulls it off, I would definitely consider implementing it though.

This ROM hack is absurd (and I mean that in the absolute best way possible). 1 rom for NHL, International, AND 94!? I usually have 1 ROM for each saved lol. Then all the options you have (progressive OT!? Which I’ve said for a long time would be a great idea in the NHL) I’m blown away by what you’ve accomplished so far on this one. Bravo.

Thank-you so much. I really appreciate it.

Thank you for this, Adam!!!

I played a bit of it last night and I'm really enjoying the adjustments and the work that is being done to the game! Love pitting the NHL 94 Canucks vs all the top modern teams. Can't wait to see how this project progresses.

Just a heads up. I tried playing a playoff game.

Best-of-3, Original '94 teams, Conference seeding, All other settings left at default.

Played one 2-player vs game. Won 5-0. Post game playoff stat screen came up and looked like this.

By the way, I thought it was really cool how the jumbotron displays the series record.

UPDATE:

I don't know if this is related to the previous issue, but when I restarted the game, the menu got a bit funky.

Although, I am leaning to it being related, because it did continue the playoffs when I pressed start.

I also deleted the .srm file and reopened the game, and while I lost my playoff progress, the glitch went away.
