I suck in 2nd period.. Doesn't matter if it's up or down, second period is always the worst. I remember that when me and a friend played a lot and logged the games, the majority of games won, were won away. That was for the first hundred logged games or so, after that it sort of evened out and went the other way. I recall hating going downwards as a kid, it was a lot harder to score. Now I don't think it's much different really. Maybe a third poll option: "none" :)

I used to be a fan or playing as the home team and always felt I had an advantage...but now I feel home advantage seems to be almost irrelevant. so skating up or down doesnt seem to matter to me any more.

It doesn't really seem to matter for me, I play just about the same going both ways. Although when I was younger I played visitors about 90% of the time, but that was mainly because I liked the colored jerseys. (that and for the most part I played SNES NHLPA 93, and I'm not sure if anyone else abused the goalie getting stuck on the south net when you did wrap arounds quite like I did when I was a kid)

Great question. I'm not sure I really have a preference for this game, but I agree with the poster that said the 2nd period can be the lowest scoring output. I don't find it any more difficult to score going up or down, but when you switch back and forth during a game, that can screw with the flow you've got going trying to score one way. Anyway, the later NHL's were definitely easier to score going down.

It's amazing how these little things still perplex us 15 years later.

this is a tough question

I personally prefer going up, and therefore I would rather be the home team more often than not. BUT lately I have paid more attention to how many goals I've scored and how many I've let in....It appears that although I like going up, I score more and I get scored on less if I am going down.

I dunno, some sort of reverse phychology thing going on.

On nhl 99 (for nintendo 64) I even go as far as to change the camera angle in between periods so that I'm always going up.

I may be the opposite...

The last 2 blitz seasons, I was much better in the 2nd period than the others. Blitz 5, I scored 40% of my goals in the 2nd.

However, the seasons before that, things were closer and sometimes the 2nd was even my worse.

I *feel* like I play better going up, but I don't think I really do.. who knows, maybe they programmed something into the game to make it easier to score going down, and it might depend on your play style if it helps you or not!

EDIT: Holy smokes this thread is old. anyone ever hear from dmac again? he disappeared some summer between GDL seasons and never came back as far as I know.

This is a toughie for me to answer. I traditionally always felt more comfortable scoring when skating north due to being mostly a 1on1/deke specialist for many years and in my early online days. However, as my game has progressed to integrate more passing, set plays, etc., I find that a lot of those new things are easier for me when I'm going south. It's almost like I can see the ice better and even in some ways prefer being the away team now due to going south twice in a game.

Based on that, I voted no preference.
