How can I bypass my router to play league games?

Hello all, I was wondering if any could assist me on bypassing my router because I'm unable to play certain teams because of Router issues. I tried just plugging my lan cable directly into my modem but for some reason I did not have internet access after that. I think I may have to set some software settings as well, such as automatically obtain an IP address etc.. which I have'nt tried yet. Any help is apprecitaed! Thanks alot! Great league!!!
