  1. For those of you whom I haven't talked to, I'm Greg the coach of the Winnipeg Jets. I have yet to play any of my league games because I do not yet have a connection fit for play. My summer apartment's internet is flakey and they don't have the proper ports open on the router. I had hoped to use my Verizon wireless card, but it is too slow.

I spoke with my apartment manager requesting some port forwarding. He told me that he doesn't know what that is and that he'd be hesitant to change anything given the delicate state of the property's internet connection. Lately it's a 50/50 shot if the internet's up in the evening. He told me that it's always 1 or 2 systems bringing the whole network down, confirming my assumption that it was some guy hogging all the bandwidtgh with his pr0n torrents.

Now the good news. The apartment manager told me that on July 18, TDS will be installing a T1 line and giving each apartment they're own dynamic IP. I don't think he knows what he is talking about, but I hope that he means each apartment will get their own account with TDS instead of 1 DSL line routed to 40 apartments. Hopefully I will have a direct connection to the internet and will be ready to go at that time.

    Thanks for your understanding and

    ,

    Greg

  3. It doesn't look like Edmonton showed up, so if you guys wanna say that SNES B#3 Calgary defeated #6 Winnipeg in 7, here are the results.....

    Game 1: 5-2 CAL

    Game 2: 2-1 WIN

    Game 3: 4-0 CAL

    Game 4: 3-2 WIN

Game 5: 3-2 CAL (OT) .....heartbreaker

    Game 6: 5-2 WIN

    Game 7: 4-1 CAL

  4. Big question...... Do you have any programming experience? I doubt there's any off the shelf solution that's both affordable and simple enough to implement relatively quick.

I'm gonna guess that the guys who do the online league "roll their own" stuff and I'm impressed by how nicely things are put together on the site.

Here's how I would do it...... if you want the results hosted online you need some way of dynamically rendering pages. I would store the data in a database using mySQL or something simiar. Then you just need to write the code that interfaces a browser with the database. I would recommend Apache Struts beacuse it's what I've used and what I'm familiar with.

If you don't need it to be online, just write a little Java application that keeps track of scores, wins, losses etc and maybe emails everyone the latest standings every evening or something.

  5. Hi,

I know it's late and I know this post won't change any FF's, but I'd really like to play the 3 games I have against SNES B Edmonton. If I can win just one, I may be in the playoffs, so obviously these games are pretty important to me.

I think it's rediculous how Edmonton got a new GM with 1 day left is the season. Not exactly a whole lot of time to make up for 2 monthes of neglect by the previous coach.

  6. Gotta give props to the keyboard warriors. There are a few Gens dudes who rock with a keyboard, HABS being one.

For me playing on a keyboard feels unnatural, I'm completely out of my element.

If anyones going to be investing time into league play it's worth shelling out a few bills for even the most garden variety game pad.

Yep and you can read all about it in my new book "Manual Goalie: Automatic Death" due out this Spring.....

  7. How about this, next season teams are ranked by GAMES PLAYED. If two teams have the same number of games played, then it's decided by points. No forfeits, no DNP's, none of that bs. Ideally, this will encite everyone to play 40 games so this rule won't matter.

This is the best way to reward people who actually play their games. What? I'm 5-35 and the #1 seed in the conference? Don't like it? Play your games and unseat me!

  8. Can SNES B get like a 1-day extension on games? I've got 3 games with edmonton, my playoff future depends on the outcome, and Edmonton was basically given 12 hours to play 30 games. Not that it can't be done, but I don't see him online right now and I'd like to be given the oppertunity to lose the games myself rather than take DNP's.

    Thanks,

    Greg

  9. The problem with Tkachuk, though, is that HE CANNOT RECEIVE A PASS. At this stage in my career (no gamepad) puck control is paramount. If I lose the faceoff, the only way I can get the puck back is from the ensuing center ice faceoff after the other teams stuffs it by Essensa. A turnover off Tkachuk leading to a goal has buried me on several occasions. His redeeming qualities, though, keep him in my good graces, namely his weigh, aggression, and shot power. When he, teemu, and zhamnov/steen are in sync it's a beautiful thing to watch.

  10. Winnipeg, MB:

Teppo Numminen's goal wasn't pretty, but it was enough to lift the Jets to a 1-0 victory over Chicago Friday night and earn them their first win on the season. Numminen streaked down the right side and was met with strong Chicago opposition. A weak shot was mishandled by Belfour and put the Jets on the board. The sellout cround of over 16,000 came to life, as it was the first and only time the Jets had a lead over the Blackhawks in the entire four-game set.

The Jets dropped the season open 3-1 to Chicago and then proceeded to take a 5-1 shellacking the folliwing game, prompting coach pyl85 to call out his players individually. "We need to play like the team we know we can be," pyl85 said. "If we are going to be competitive in this league we need to play a more physical game. Roenick walked all over us last night. I want to see Housley or Teppo knock him on his [backside] as soon as he crossed the blue line." pyl85 added, "and we need to see stronger goaltending from Essensa, playing the kind of hockey we know he is capable of." pyl85 went on to say that if Essensa's play doesn't improve, he may be dealt for an equally mediocre goaltender.

After another 4-2 loss, Friday's victory showed the Jets finally answer pyl85's call. Essensa recorded his first shutout on the season and strong play by Numminen and Housley kept the Blackhawk snipers at bay. Keith Tkachuk, who was rotated in on left-wing, was impressive, as well. "His physical play was just what we needed and he meshed well on a lite with Selanne and Zhamnov," pyl85 commented after the game. "He has the potential to be a major star in this organization. He hit, what, three posts in a row that one shift?" pyl85 added. Let's see if the Jets can build on this momentum in games to come.
