So how about this? Matching roughing penalties. We see it all the time in the NHL, the little scrums where players facewash each other, grab on like they're thinking about dropping the mitts while shoving or punching each other...It essentially would be a brief fight with gloves on...players trade a punch or two, or do the hold animation like in a fight, but don't drop the gloves and sticks and go into a full on 5 minute major fight. Or maybe it 'could' lead into a full fight but would not necessarily, meaning the glove on punches could trigger the same fight check that a collision does. How realistic is this? Anyone have ideas for it or see it as a possibility? I just think it could be a really fun thing to see play out in the game.

trying to figure out how to make several little changes

I'm learning how to adjust the code in Chaos' fight patch for some of this stuff, but a lot of it isn't in the fight patch and is in the regular game code. I just figured out how to open files in a hex editor and was able to change the energy of the players, so now I know at least if I can find the right hex, how to make changes there. Here are several little things I've been trying to figure out how to change or experiment with that I haven't found yet, any help or pointing me in the right direction is appreciated.

*when goalies get penalties, I would like them to not serve their own penalties. To either be served by a skater, or at least have them replaced by a backup goalie while they are in the box if replacing them with a skater isn't really an option.

*I've got 'line brawls' working (IE, when a fight is happening, it's possible for more fights to break out.) However, once the initial fight is over the screen cuts to all players skating to the box. I'd like to either allow ALL fights to finish before they skate to the box, or if that's too difficult, at least EXTEND the timer so that once the first fight is over, a few more seconds pass before they all go to the box.

*Also during fights, all players tend to crowd around the fight, even goalies, we've all seen this. I would like the goalies to seek out the other goalie as they tend to do during brawls. This way they will sort of pair off, and it's possible they'll end up in a fight if they bump into each other.

*Do we know where player animations are for big hits? Specifically when they get hit into the bench or penalty box, into the boards, or flattened with a check that injures them. I'd like for those hits to have a higher chance of fights happening just after, but I need to find where they are in the code to make that happen.

Thanks for any help!

Searching tools, software, information & files for NHL 94 SEGA Genesis editing according to AI

Hi, i started my tools, software, information & files searching to the AI (Google Gemini), i've found various (Game editors, Graphic editors, Color palette editors and other), but i've later search for other information to the Google Gemini and i'm not using the ChatGPT because the app (ChatGPT) reaches the limit of search information.

And also, i've found the information to how to run the NOSE Editor with Windows XP MiniOS with Gemini, but i'm use a virtual machine (Virtual PC 2007), and recently i've make my own Editing & Hacking Workstation to the Tools and other files to Gemini.

I've installed the Virtual Machine Additions, Visual Basic 6 Runtime Plus and DirectX (June 2010) to my new Workstation, and also i choice the GENS Emulator for Testing.

If you have a tool, software, information or file to found, say something. After getting frustrated trying to find workarounds, I decided to just start making something that will be helpful, and it snowballed from there. After doing a bunch of experiments, working within my extremely basic programming capabilities and essentially vibe coding, I made this little applet that runs on Chrome (untested on other browsers.)

It's a super lightweight roster editor, palette editor and graphics viewer rolled into one (for now).

That's the working title: ONE. I am currently going to look into how far you can go with it - I have two versions of banners with reduced width fonts.

Anyway - this is coming along and it's working so far - just need to put it through it's paces.

Making the Game More Difficult?

Hello, I've been playing around with an Olympic conversion of NHL94 - thus far mostly focusing on rosters and cosmetics, but wondering about ways one might approach making the game more difficult beyond increasing goalie ratings. Are their any non-obvious values we should be looking at that could be HEX edited? Any other approaches one might take?

FYI, unrelated, for those interested in AI, I came across some work using NHL 94 for training algorithms: https://github.com/MatPoliquin/nhl94-ai

Its cool stuff, but I'd rather not need a bank of Nvidia RTX cards to play NHL 94

	Hi all,

This is mostly to capture my thinking, as I do hope to come back to this another day, but I cannot spend any more time listening to my computer play version of "Go fight win!"... And in case anyone else has started the work or has an interest, here's some information for you!

	Objective:
Determine where/what the note pitches are in the NHL '94 code

Background: To be able to edit or add new music, somehow those bytes need to be translated out of code into music- then new pieces can be translated from music into code.
I'll start with "Go, Fight, Win!" (The song at offset 00184052 in DEC) Why? It's first, and it's a simple song in '94 with only a couple of chords.
Some background (trying not to get too music geek here)- Go Fight win is quarter notes for the first 3 notes, and the first measure's tones are 1-3-4-4#-5 on a scale. In half steps from the root, they are 0-4-5-6-7 (So the last three notes are chromatic). It's tempo in NHL '94 is around 90 BPM.
Process: So I'll copy the code from this song in small parts to the start of song 02 (Start of game when Boston is the home team, so it's easy to access in the game) to see if I can ID the first measure's code. The first 64 bytes are close (the last note of the measure is cut short, but it's enough to work with)
Two patterns stick out to me in those bytes- 27-2B-2C-2D and 33-37-38-39. 27-2B might be too far of a jump, but it might be that what I'm hearing as a single note might be two notes together.

For notes- I'm looking at decimal 184996 onward. So these are the chunks I'm looking at: (underlined the sets of 90 for clarity)

	90 27 23 00
90 33 23 14
80 27 37 03
80 33 41 0E
90 37 23 00
90 2B 23 14
80 2B 48 03
80 37 47 10
90 38 23 00
90 2C 23 13
80 2C 16 01
80 38 2E 06
90 39 23 00
90 2D 23 1A
80 2D 50 02
80 39 50 01

	From my experiments I believe:

80/90 have to do with the instrument. Changing all the 90's to 80 met me with silence. I think you can think of 90 as an on switch and 80 as an off swtich. But I can't see why you'd have values after a 'off' instrument (3703, 410E for example) so I'm not sure here. I didn't experiment with changing the 90's to different values, as my goal today was simply the pitch.

I'm certain the second set of bytes are pitches. If you change the on and off pitches together, you can move around the pitch of the notes. (SUCCESS!)

I can't figure out the third set, and any attempts to change them ended inconclusively. It might be a note style?

I thought the 4th set was note length, but I'm struggling with the 00 values. Changing the 14's up and down made the notes longer and shorter. Maybe it loads all the notes then plays them for that length? Again, I can't figure out the off notes bytes there.

Conclusion: I believe I found the pitches, which was my goal for today. When I get a better grasp on note length, I can probably make the note long enough to calibrate the pitches with a tuner, which means note length will be the next project.

	Hi there

A bit of a specific one this - I'm a sound engineer, and I'm currently working on a PAL preservation project to rip music from Mega Drive Model 1 PAL hardware using an external sound recorder connected to my Mega Drive 3.5mm audio jack. I plan to use industrial mastering tools to make the game audio sound much more listenable.

The results on games that have a sound test have been astonishing for me, but it's games like this, where there isn't a sound test, that are a little trickier. I've been able to record the main theme, and the theme from the playoff brackets with no problem whatsoever - both themes naturally play long enough to get to the end/loop points.

It's the music that plays at the end of a period/game that's frustrating me. No matter what I do, even if there are no "game highlights" from other matches to ruin the flow, the theme only plays for around a minute or so before the screen goes off on it's own.

Is there a way, perhaps through hacking, that can force the game to stay on that screen for longer so that the music can play to its loop point (which is around 2:10 from a very low quality version I've heard)? Or is there a way to change the main title screen theme to that one instead?

This topic is dedicated to the A button and the timing of how this works, and exploring possible solutions or improvements to improve ease of aiming and pulling off A button (long) clearances without bringing up the Edit Lines menu.

The A-button hold-down timing has a very small window for which you have to hold down the A button in order to do a Clear Puck without it bringing up the Edit Lines Menu. It is a narrow 8frames-15frames window to do a (Long) A button Clearance without it bringing up the Edit Lines menu.

As I'm sure many of you have, I've gotten "OK" with this timing, I've learned how to do it but it's not natural. It's way too small of a window of needing to have that button held down, especially with aiming involved. Lets face it Buds, however skilled you might be at it, there's a lot going on with the A button and a solution is needed. I don't think anyone would deny how difficult it is to consistently aim clear pucks and get them off without the Edit Lines screen coming up. I'd imagine many NHL 94 players probably don't even bother with the timing since it's too tough they just let the Edit Lines screen come up every time and press the line it's on cause you aren't ready to do a line change. This happens over and over again and it's just become a quirk of NHL 94.

For me, the Edit Lines screen shouldn't be coming up unless you want to change Lines, which often is not when the need to do an angled A button (Long) clearance arises. Doing an A button Flip pass is just a quick tap of A, that's not an issue like the longer version. When I hold down A too long by mistake, and it brings up the Edit Lines screen it takes me out of my NHL 94 rhythm. Not only seeing the Menu but also is releasing when it reaches that 16th frame instead of when I command it to. I'm often forced to think about Lines when I'm trying to focus on chasing the puck. Edit Lines should not be tied to the Clear puck like this in such a manner, we really need more freedom to aim our Clear pucks "freely" with precise timing.

How skilled are you at aiming Long A button clearances and getting them off within the narrow 8frames-15frames window before the Edit Lines screen comes up? In that quarter second, are you able to do that easily / consistently, or do you mess up sometimes trying, have you become frustrated with it and do you some times "give up" on trying to hit that window because it's too hard and you just end up holding A until the Edit Screen comes up, which you didn't ask for but you got anyway, and now you need to pick the line that's already on the ice because you're ready ready to do a line change, and in that time you stop playing, but you just really needed to clear it. We all go through this over and over again. There's an everlasting struggle of trying to Clear the Puck, with a Long A button hold, and to aim it properly within this super narrow window and to do it before the Edit Lines screen comes up. You must hold down A, then with it briefly held down, quick aim your d-pad and have that d-pad position held, then release A before it automatically releases the puck and brings up the Edit Lines screen.

I have been exploring the possibility of having a button dedicated to clear pucks (which can be combined with D-pad input) to distinguish it from a standard A button tap flip pass. The short A button tapped flip passes are easier to pull off on the A button than clearances without bringing up the Edit Lines menu. It would be helpful to do not have to wait, even for between a eighth of a second to quarter second to actually do the Clear Puck. Your player might be gliding so waiting a moment longer would affect the placement. We've really never experienced natural aiming of clearing pucks in NHL 94 because of how multiple functions were tied to the A button. A button clearances are not as popular for this reason, we're so rushed and distracted by the timing of the A button involved and its relation to the Edit Lines menu. So better A-button timing is needed, but short of being able to edit the A button timings, what I propose is a dedicated Clear puck button separate from the A button which would allow free aiming and instant engagement. Think about the kind of moves you could pull off if you didn't have to wait that eighth to a quarter second before launching it? It would be a huge improvement to the control scheme and would help us discover a new way of aiming and making puck clearances. It would also be interesting to see if we could design a mid-range length, halfway between flip pass and a clearance.

If a dedicated Puck Clearance separate button appeals to you. If you struggle with pulling off A button clearances and aiming it properly all without bringing up the Edit Lines, and have been dreaming about a better A button, you are in the right place. I would like to develop a solution that results in greater response and freedom when doing Long Puck Clearances.

I call this the "Zombie" Player Card Glitch. For a split second, the first player card looks like this:

That's McDavid's player card for the Oilers. Maybe I am misremembering, but I could have sworn a few years back I saw a thread on this forum where this issue was resolved and fixed? Yet I am still seeing it now on all the rom hacks. As someone with OCD this drives me crazy. I really hate this glitch. From what I've read it has something to do with when the player cards loads, it takes a second to "find" the location and then this ugly image appears briefly. Is there any way to correct this issue? Or perhaps someone has some leads that I can look into?

EDIT: So it looks like the player card palette is shared briefly with whatever the opposing team's logo colors are. Here's another screenshot of Oilers vs. Canadiens (McDavid):

One solution could possibly be to change some of the colors on the team logo palette's, but then you'd only have 8 colors to work with the logo instead of 16. Hmm...any ideas?

Hi all, new around these parts. Forgive me but I'm wondering how to change the name that appears on the team banners on the scoreboard in the pause menu? Not sure if I need NOSE or Tile Molester or what. I have used NOSE to change the team names and abbreviations just fine but am abit lost on banners. Any help would be much appreciated!

This is getting possible. I have ported the 93 fighting code into 94 (using the help of the NHL92 source code).

Luckily, all the conditionals for fighting have been left in the 94 code, and just the sub routines have been removed.

I have added all the logic code. It works! (check the video below)

The sprites have not been added yet, and this will be a work in progress. Right now, it's just a stick fight.

Also, the fighting banner has not been added, but will be in the future.

Currently, I am trying to figure out how to port the 93 fighting sprites over into 94.

You can follow my updates on Discord, and I will also post here.

I dunno if this happens to you folks, but have you ever been trying to think of something different to hack into the game and see if it's possible? It happens to me ALL the time... yet I always seem to forget. So as a way to catalogue or debunk some of these wacko ideas, I have decided to start cataloguing them here. I welcome all modding mythbusters to come in and state if these thoughts are confirmed, plausible or just busted and to be sent to the area in my brain where the bad thoughts go (not THOSE bad thoughts... perv!)

	Here goes:

	IDEA 1: Multi-track music files

So most of you know I managed to stick in a new title theme into HNIC 90-91, complete with 4 instruments. I'm wondering if there's a way where we can isolate and reinsert each individual instrument so that they play their own part of the main track. Right now, I just made a faux harmony thing, where a specific instrument plays a certain pitch range. That's far from perfect though. Using smoz' python script, I had to fake the theme by breaking it. And it was a slow agonizing process. One that I wouldn't inflict on my worst enemy - so I'm loath to explain how I did it to all my good buds here. It's a torture I don't want to inflict on people I like.

If smoz script could be adapted to read more than one instrument off of a midi file, that would be absolutely grand.

	IDEA 2: Visors

We've done a variety of little hacks here and there. Adding tape, players on the bench, coaches, adjusting stripes on player jerseys, referees and timekeepers, goalie equipment and so on. Here's my random thought... has anyone considered a visor on the player helmet instead of those dead little eyes they have?

	IDEA 3: Fighting

Okay, before you start throwing tomatoes, hear me out. We always get someone waltzing in here asking if we can put fighting back into NHL 94 - we all know logistically it's not plausible. But have we considered looking at it a bit differently... what if there was a way to figure out how to implement a one-timer in NHLPA93? All of the animations are there for a slap shot and bullet pass... it's now trying to figure out how to trigger it. Just a thought, of course... but I couldn't just let that one evaporate into the ether without asking at least.

	*SIDE NOTE*

I am still alive and kicking. Just doing some updates to HNIC 90-91 (Colour portraits? Coach's corner theme?) before I unleash the final version of the opening day rosters and the long awaited playoff roster version... before moving on to HNIC 91-92.

It's good to be back.

This screenshot of the NHL 94 font on Fontforge says that characters like the quotation mark and comma are present.

However, Photoshop tells a different story, as Photoshop thinks the glyph is missing completely.

Does anyone know what might have happened here? The comma should be between the plus and minus signs, and the apostrophe should be between the ampersand (replaced with an arrow) and the curvy bracket.

Update: this is above my skill level until the emulator handles the edit lines screen better - as of 11/24/22, it reads the edit lines screen as a giant 40+ tile block wide screen and zooms all the way out to fit, which then puts the game back into the original aspect ratio. Very odd!

Not sure how many of you have seen this, but it pretty much lays the groundwork for communities like ours to figure out how to get games running in as wide of an aspect ratio as we so choose.

There's been some pretty great results so far in other games, and I have no doubt that we could all get things running smoothly if we wanted to over here.

I tested the feature myself, and it looks pretty good when it is working correctly, but the main problem is that it's not exactly reliable.

Here's what the rink looks like. It's pretty beautiful if I do say so myself.
