  1. Dug this up on @swos old site and found it useful.  Same info as wboy's above but not tied to the rink and a nice big font for us old folks.  I've also attached a text file with the hex values of the tiles for the rink layout.

    First digit:

    1 - Ice (366884, 1st palette)

    2 - Rink (366884, 2nd palette)

    3 - Home team palette

    4 - Away team palette

    Second digit:

To flip horizontally, change from 0 to 1 (or 1 to 2)

To flip vertically, change from 0 to 8 (or 1 to 9)

I found the goalies to be less spastic and remain closer to their net (on average) when I reduced the speed to zero.  It’s not an exact science, and not 100%, but it felt noticeably different for/to me.  Having a good agility is what matters with goalie side to side movement and reflexes.  Perhaps, a zero speed makes them take less risk?  It also seems to keep them away from the trapezoid on average.  Maybe the CPU logic thinks that a goalie shouldn’t come too far out of net, with attackers coming, if their speed is low.  I play manual goalie and haven’t had any issues.  I play sim as well and as noted above, like what I see from the goalies.

The checking, like most of my ratings, are on a per game average over a three year span.  They may be a touch lower than some because I got tired of seeing certain players get 8-10 checks in a five minute period.  It’s not realistic.  Again, not a 100% exact science but I am liking the results compared to how I started last season.

I appreciate the thought put into the goalie ratings.  I've been guilty of oversimplifying at times into "good goalie", "average goalie" and "bad goalie" because the effects of the ratings haven't been documented and discussed nearly as well as those for the skaters.

  3. Trying to clean up and finish some of the random projects that I started and never got around to completing...

1952 was the last Canadian gold medal before a 50-year drought and was also the last Olympic games before the appearance of the USSR on ice in '56.  Represented by the Edmonton Mercurys, a team sponsored by a local car dealership, the Canadians dominated the tournament.

The US and Canadian teams were lambasted by the international media for their physical style of play with local newspapers predicting that relations between the US and the Europeans would suffer due to a fight between American defenseman Joe Czarnota and Swiss forward Gian Bazzi.  The Norwegian crowds littered the ice with orange peels and labeled the US team "Chicago gangsters".  After securing the gold medal the Canadian team was accused of colluding with their North American brethren in order to earn the silver medal for the US squad.  Norway's Dagbladet newspaper described the game as a "friendly" and accused the Canadians of "making such mistakes that even the Norwegian hockey players would not have made".

The biggest controversy of the Games was the award of the bronze medal.  Czechoslovakia defeated Sweden 4-0 on the final day of the tournament, both teams finishing with identical 6-2 records and equal goal differentials.  The Czechoslavaks believed that they had won the bronze based on their shutout of the Swedes, however it was determined that the two teams should play again the following day in order to break the tie.  Tre Kronor overcame a 3-0 deficit and won the impromptu "playoff" by a score of 5-3 and sent Czechoslovakia home empty handed.

Take mercy on the quality of the player photos - in a lot of cases it's the only known picture of a player...

  4. Thanks for everything Coach.  I learned a tremendous amount from both playing and playing with your ROMs.  Seeing you go from a newbie to producing high quality ROMs of your own with no real background inspired me to give it a shot myself.  Thank you for always being willing to chirp in when I would ask a silly question and pointing me in the right direction whenever you were able.  I've gotten an incredible number of additional hours of enjoyment out of this game both directly and indirectly because of your participation on these forums.

Spoiling us with the European teams!!!

Thought it would be a fun twist, especially considering the level of European involvement the WHA had.  Building up a library of European team graphics so there may be more down the road...

  6. Aren't goalies a little "wonky" by nature :)  Sorry, I'll see myself out...

I've seen or heard the same but also haven't noticed it in-game.  In your experience, would it be fair to say that these ratings affect behavior (play the puck or freeze it) as opposed to performance (ability to stop the puck)?  I can't say I've noticed much impact in gameplay but I usually have a human opponent.

  7. Season 4 of the WHA saw the shuffling of franchises continue as Baltimore and Chicago were replaced by new teams in Cincinnati and Denver while Vancouver moved to Calgary to become the Cowboys.  Ominously for the league, Denver moved to Ottawa before ultimately folding at midseason.  In spite of their success in the standings and at the gate Minnesota suffered the same fate several weeks later, dropping the circuit to 12 teams.

On the ice, Quebec's Marc Tardif won the "triple crown", dominating the league with 71 goals, 77 assists and 148 points en route to winning the Gordie Howe trophy as the league's most valuable player.

Included in the ROM are all 12 teams which finished the season along with the all star teams representing the Canadian and US-based franchises.

BONUS - Denver, Minnesota and Ottawa are included with rosters that reflect players who suited up for these teams.

DOUBLE BONUS - The Winnipeg Jets and Toronto Toros traveled to Europe for their training camps and faced off against a collection of Swedish and Finnish club, national and all-star teams.  I've included the 12 teams for which I was able to locate reasonable stats in order to cover all of your preseason needs.  Player photos aren't always available or of very good quality but I've included what I can.

This may help some people, or just be convenient for any modder. It's an xml file that is a bunch of bookmarks in TileMolester for the 32-team rom template.

To use, download the file and put it in the resources folder of your tilemolester install. RENAME it so the name of the xml is exactly the same as the name of rom you are editing.

Then open tilemolester and open up your rom. To edit something, go to the top menu, Navigate and choose what you want to edit. After that, go to Palette and choose the corresponding palette for what you are editing. Voila, never look up a hex address again.

(For the palette bookmarks, if it says 'p2' or another number, load the palette, then hit the right arrow at the bottom menu to go to the 2nd page of bookmarked palette)

    I hope this helps!

Thanks Naples, this is great.  Now I can free up those bytes in my head where I had memorized the palettes

  9. Still struggling with the banners / logos.  It seems that the offsets for the "Import Internal Palette" have moved (and I'm assuming also changed size to accommodate 32 teams).  The in-game banners would keep the same palette but it looks like it has moved also.  Any ideas?

  10. Had a chance over the weekend to play this with my boys and had a blast with the mix of players and teams across different eras.  Pleasant surprise to be able to replay the '96 World Cup matchup between the US and Canada which has been featured quite a bit on NHLN recently.

The devil is in the details - the banners, absolutely amazing...  Never even occurred to me to do anything other than the standard 2-tone.

Not sure if this has ever been discussed before but has anyone ever considered all-time all-star teams?  Was fooling around with the lines and the oldest threatened me with annihilation if he could only put out a Lemieux-Gretzky-McDavid line.  Got me thinking.
