  1. This game has yet to be logged because Fenty seems unable to find his log a game password. The final score was 7-5 for Fenty and the LA Kings.

After a tight first period, the Kings led 1-0, but then scored two quick ones early in the second to open up a 3-0 lead. Quebec then scored two goals within about 12 seconds of each other to pull to within 3-2, and before the period ended, Mats Sundin would count his second of the game to tie things at 3-3 heading into the third. Fenty seemed on his heels and called a timeout.

The third was going fine for Quebec until a bad pinch by Curtis Lesyschyn (usually the Nords' steadiest defensive player) led to a partial breakaway by Wayne Gretzky. However, Gretzky's former LA teammate Steve Duchesne, who coincidentally assisted on Gretzky's record-breaking 1851st NHL point, raced back and caught Gretz in time, and at about the hash marks got IN FRONT OF HIM and nailed him to the ice. But in one of those bullshit calls the 94 referees make, they ruled it a penalty shot because the "beep" had sounded. I was wild! Fenty rarely misses on penalty shots, especially with a player of Gretz's calibre, and he made a nice spinarama move to give the Kings a 4-3 lead. It was a real backbreaker. From then on, the Nords just couldn't seem to get possession of the puck. They felt that they'd score for sure if they could get to the net but their D and goaltending totally collapsed and next thing you know it's 7-3 LA and it's pretty much done. Finally, with about 1:45 left, Quebec gets around the net twice and score two REALLY quick ones to cut it to 7-5. 7-3 with 1:45 left looked insurmountable, but 7-5 with about 1:20 left did not. Quebec's motor was really running now, but they sadly lost the next faceoff and never really regained possession. Fenty did a good job of ragging off the rest of the clock and it was over, 7-5 Kings, with Gretzky putting in a dominant performance.

Congratulations to last year's "Coach Much Better Than His Record Indicates", and here's hoping that this time around your record is a true indication of your skill! gfg man

  2. Well today the Quebec Nordiques had the honour of being Edmonton's opponent for their home opener, which meant that the Nords team had to stand on the blueline for what seemed like forever, watching the Oilers' Stanley Cup banners unfurl and listening to the crowd go insane, choking back that lump in their collective throats that knew that they were so close to such a celebration of their own at the Colisee, but it just got away on them. It was tough to watch the banners they really thought could be theirs presented in another arena, but all the boys can do is use it as extra motivation for this season.

After the smoke cleared from a great Stanley Cup banner presentation, the home crowd was treated to a dandy home opener between two great teams, the Oilers and Quebec. It was a wild seesaw affair, which saw the lead change hands MANY times, including the evaporation of two different two goal leads (one for each side).

The Nordiques opened the scoring in the game's first minute as Joe Sakic did what he does best, one-timing one home from in close. However, the Oilers would tie things up before the end of the period on a bit of an odd goal that Ron Hextall and the Nordiques sure wished they could have back. Edmonton fired a hard one around the glass from behind center, and Quebec was originally going to send one of its D in there to touch up for the icing. However, with an Oiler or two forechecking hard, it looked like it may be a safer play to send Hextall out of his net to play the puck. In a truly odd scenario, the puck just failed to reach Hextall- it was about half a millimetre away from him and just stopped! As you all know, you can only move your goalie a certain length away from the net in this game. By then it was too late, and an Oiler swooped in, gleefully grabbed the loose puck, and threw it out front for an easy tap-in on the empty net. The groans from Quebec's bench could be heard up in the nosebleeds! 1-1 after a very hard-fought and well-played first.

The Oilers came out flying in the second, and after two sweet Slimeball dekes, opened up a 3-1 lead early. Another goal may have really put the Nords into trouble, but they gritted out an ugly "lunchpail" type goal from Owen Nolan a minute or so later to get back into things at 3-2. Soon afterward, Mats Sundin scored on a great individual effort to tie the game, and not long after that, Sundin countered again to give the Nordiques a 4-3 lead. Things had turned around quickly, and I could definitely feel Edmonton's pain as that last goal looked like it was going to hit the goalie square on, but just seemed to go through him for some reason. Late in the period, Sundin completed the hat trick, going short side, and a period that looked like it may be an ugly one for Quebec turned out pretty nice, and they headed to the room with a 5-3 lead.

The third period was quiet and it looked like Quebec may eat away the clock, until Klima threw one out front for Doug Weight, who put a great one-timer past Hextall to make it 5-4 and suddenly a brand new game. Off of the next two faceoffs, Edmonton ended up making my two D look like pylons and scoring, and suddenly Northlands Coliseum was rocking as the Oilers were in the driver's seat with a 6-5 lead. A minute and a half or so left for Quebec to try and calm down and notch the equalizer. Thankfully, Mats Sundin for the second time this season provided a heroic late game-tying goal when his team needed one, and snapped a beauty top cheese to tie things at 6-6 and quiet Northlands quite a bit.

The game looked like it may be headed for OT, until Joe Sakic came down two-on-two on what seemed like a harmless-looking rush. He barely beat the D, then tried just one of the token cheap dekes that usually don't work on the very good goalies in this league, but he didn't really have room or time to try anything else. Somehow, it caught Bill Ranford moving the wrong way, and the Nords had a new lead, 7-6, that they would not relinquish. Quebec then won the next draw and kind of cheaply ragged down the clock to hang on for a win they felt very lucky to come away with.

GREAT game by Slimeball, he scared the hell out of me with both the 3-1 second period lead and the comeback from 5-3 to take a 6-5 lead in the third. It may sound cliche but this one realllly coulda gone either way! I for one was just happy that it turned out a little better than my meeting with the guy last season, where he dealt me my most lopsided loss thus far in league play, a 9-3 trouncing as the Detroit Red Wings.

Good luck the rest of the way Edmonton, the Oilers and their fans are in for a great season for sure, and I expect to see them challenge for the Smythe Division (NOT Pacific Division) title and one of the top seeds in the West (you'd think I'd be consistent and use "Campbell).

s**t that was way too long a recap for a regular season game, I need to get a life. :D

  3. You make a good point PokerChamp.

I saw it first-hand last night when playing a best-of-seven (in person, not online) against the94kid.

Game 5 of our series, game tied 4-4, I get a two-man advantage late in the third period, faceoff in his end, looks like Biff's in real trouble. Nope! He wins the draw, and my forwards curl RIGHT towards the net automatically, leaving a huge-ass lane for him to send a guy in alone (the guy was Peter Taglianetti of all people). Taglianetti gets in close, drops it back to Lemieux, and it was lights out for that game. Had I been at even strength I really doubt my forwards go right to the net like that even tho I don't even have the puck, and that huge lane likely doesn't open up for him. Of course he might have scored the next goal anyway, just maybe not so easily. :D

So I know exactly what you mean.

  4. After no games being played in the illustrious SNES A League on the first day of competition, Cajanek (Washington) and Deer (Quebec) decided they wanted the honour of being the ones to kick off the season. Home and home series, first game at the Capital Centre in Washington, rematch at Le Colisee de Quebec.

The first goal of the season was scored right away, 13 secs off the opening faceoff, as Joe Sakic one-timed home a harsh one. Washington countered quickly however as Peter Bondra potted the season's first powerplay goal, and the teams went into the dressing room after a hard-fought first period tied 2-2. In the second and third, however, Quebec seemed to find all the breaks, and Sakic and Nolan couldn't be stopped. The Nordiques won 11-5, with both Sakic (5-2-7) and Nolan (4-3-7) finishing with seven points.

The rematch at the Colisee was much closer. Quebec took a 3-1 second period lead but then seemed to kind of fall victim to some great neutral zone coverage by Washington, and couldn't get anything going. With some real persistence (banging in third rebounds etc), Washington clawed its way back into the game, and with just under three minutes to play in the third, took a 4-3 lead. Quebec hadn't even had a decent scoring chance since its last goal, and it just didn't look like they had the tying goal in them. They would not quit, however, and Mats Sundin - a guy whose grit has been questioned at times in past league play- found a way to sandpaper out the tying goal with just 20-some seconds remaining on the clock. The teams would go to OT, but not without a scare for Quebec, as a bad giveaway in the dying seconds led to a point blank chance for Bondra. It looked like he had Nordiques' goalie Ron Hextall beaten but Hextall got an arm down and just barely kept it from crossing the line. The season's first overtime session ended quickly, as Quebec won the draw, Sundin swooped in, cut towards centre, and fired a shot top corner glove side to end it. Quebec felt very lucky to win this game- it really felt like it was going to be one that got away.

Great home-and-home Washington, and good luck in the rest of your games this month!

  5. It's true, the games are more fun when respect is shown both ways. Biff man you and I have faced off in how many Saturday night championship finals, and have been pretty drunk in a lot of them, and tempers have flared in some of them (cough controller smashings cough near shatterings of glass tables ;) ), but respect is ALWAYS shown for the other player, even if it's not always shown for the controller. :P

Having said all of that, I gotta say that I thoroughly enjoyed playing against everyone in the league last year, and I'm very confident that the same will hold true this season!

Can't BELIEVE the new season is about to start already, although maybe that's because playoffs were dragged out so long that it seems like last season just ended. After I got knocked out I took a little break from playing 94 online, recently I've started playing a few exhibition games again, now holy crap I can't believe the new season is right around the corner.

    Looking forward to it!

  6. Oh my GODDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

If this ever comes to fruition, I NEED A COPY!!!!

I'm a HUGE QMJHL fan, and a HUGE NHL 94 fan, and the opportunity to play Q hockey games on NHL 94, I don't think I'd leave the house!!! :D

So I'm gonna keep myself posted on this FOR SURE.

  7. Wow, look at the calibre of that SNES A League! Almost all of the solid vets are back, many sporting new teams, and I gotta say I don't see too many easy games in there at all.......... gonna be tight, league is much more competitive than it was last season and it was very competitive last season.

    A couple questions:

    - Right now I only see 18 guys in the A league, isn't there supposed to be 20? I only see four guys in the Patrick and Smythe divions so far. Is that list final or is the league going to be topped off at 20? Still a couple quality teams left in NYI and Toronto......... heck they both made the final four in 93. If someone took Toronto maybe Winnipeg could be moved back to the Smythe so it'd be five teams per division.

    - I can't help but notice that a coupld of solid vets don't seem to be there this time around. Death Hand, bobeto42, Thomas, and BSDaemon jump out at me- are you guys really not playing this season? Also not there is gionta26, the brother of Cajanek, who seemed to be getting into things late in the season as Philly's replacement coach.

    Can't wait to get started!

  8. A big congrats to JotaC for winning this playoff marathon. He may not have gone in as the odds-on favourite, and he may have had some tough times against LA and Vancouver, but he then went totally insane, rattling off ELEVEN straight playoff wins to rightfully win the Cup. This guy showed me in a few exhibition games what a great player he is, and Jota man I hope you enjoy that Stanley Cup when it comes in the mail!!! Congrats on winning the first season of this great league!

To my man Biff, I know EXACTLY how you feel. I can't believe how much this reminds me of my loss to you in the East final. There are quite a few guys near the top who could all beat each other in a best of 7 series on any given night, and that's all ya gotta remember- I beat myself up for a little while after losing to you convincing myself that I choked and stuff like that, but now that it's a week later I realize that all it was was two equal guys playing in a series and it just wasn't one guy's night. Same thing with you and Jota, either of you two could win on a given night. Anyway you dominated all year long and struck fear into a lot of other players, your goals total will be tough to top, and don't forget that after you and I played a million championships against each other with them going about 50/50, you still hold the bragging rights of having won the most important Biff-Deer battle, and you can still say that you went the furthest of the CB boys in this league.

Most importantly (and if there's anything good to come of how lnog the playoffs were dragged out), the new season is only a few weeks away, and all the fun starts again.

Congrats again to JotaC and Edmonton, what a season it was!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Well folks, after an excruciatingly long wait, we finally have the SNES league down to two.

The Rangers vs Edmonton for the Stanley Cup.

I'd like to thank Evan, Schwartz, and everyone I played against for helping me have just an unreal time in my first season of NHL 94 online hockey. I had a blast and can't wait to get next season going. I also wish both Biff and Jota best of luck in the final, although I can't lie, I want the Cup to come back to Cape Breton, so I'm cheering for the Rangers. :)

As for my series against the94kid, I don't know what to say. Well the first thing to say is that Biff played amazing, I don't know if anyone would have beaten him the way he played. As for the way I played, I choked pretty badly. After a great season and unreal first two rounds, I just got a little overexcited about the whole Cup run and got too worked up for this series. As a result, I came out of the gate with some major butterflies. I hoped that they'd eventually go away like they did against Shakazuzu, but they just didn't. I made a shitload of horrible horrible mistakes and took a bunch of extremely bad penalties as a result of pure nerves alone. I couldn't win a faceoff, couldn't stay out of the box, and I don't know how many passes either went nowhere or resulted in a turnover (and often a goal) or sometimes just hit a skate. A partial factor in the faceoffs, penalty box troubles, and passes hitting skates had to do with the computer just not liking me tonight (remember what Shaka said in another thread, "Sometimes the computer just won't let you win"), but it had more to do with me letting nerves get the better of me. But the end result is that Terry was by far the better player tonight, and I congratulate him once again on an awesome showing.

May the best man win the final, but most importantly, may the two men get the final in within the next few days!!!!

Thanks again boys and can't wait for next season.

  10. Just wonder how the divisions will be set up?

Just noticing that now the Atlantic and Pacific both have only 4 teams, where the Northeast and Central both have 6.

    Any idea yet?

They'll probably go four divisions of five, just shuffling one team (whichever makes the most sense) from a division with six over to a division with four. Like, for example, moving Pittsburgh from the Patrick to the Adams.

And that brings me to my next point- Norris/Smythe/Adams/Patrick >>>>>>>>>>> Central/Pacific/Northeast/Atlantic!!!!!! :)

I know that this is NHL 94 but it's based on the 93 season so I still call those divisions by their 93 names (the change was made for the 94 season).

Although in 93 the Stars were in Minnesota, and everyone still calls them Dallas in this game. Although it'd be way cooler if they were still in Minnesota in the game.

Oh well, at least Winnipeg, Hartford, and ESPECIALLY Quebec  are still in this game!

  11. Biff you gonna be around tonight? I should be, so if you're around we can at the very least get the first two or three games of this series in. Just gimme a time and I'll try to be there.

QUEERbec eh? Well prepare to take it up the ass. :)

  12. "Prediction: NYR IN 7"

Oh yes, Deer calls another series bang-on! I gots prognostication skills baby. In fact I've called NYR's entire playoffs so far, also picked him to beat Hartford in six. :)

Great to see NYR and Boston finally (after an absolute eternity) get their series done, and congrats to both on a very hard-fought series. Boston almost pulled off the miracle comeback from an 0-3 deficit, but NYR remained cool during a Game 7 situation where a lot of guys might have panicked after letting go of a 3-0 lead.

Now we have Biff and I, which is THE rivalry back home- almost every championship played on console over the past year has seen he and I meeting in the final. In fact this 94 online season wouldn't have felt complete if there wasn't a Biff-Deer playoff series. This time the stakes are higher- the East title and more importantly, the right to go on to play JotaC for the Stanley Cup!

Here's to an epic series that more than does justice to one of the biggest rivalries in 94 - Biff vs Deer!

  13. Phewwwww, I kinda got drunk last night and forgot about today being registration day and forgot about my plan to log on at 12:01 to ensure I get my beloved Nords.

I logged onto the Forum today, saw the registration form up, and went NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I filled it out anyway, then read this thread and realized that registration only started 10 mins ago! SWEET
