Looking at the last 6 months, it looks like 94 is dead.

    Does anyone play anymore?

ETB League was the last fairly good league and it had had a forfeit for the Finals and 2 of 20 coaches quit.
VHL Season 4 had 1 coach finish his season and barely 50% of the games played and a playoff that is still dragging on as it enters its 6th month of play.
Surviving Summer had almost zero participation.
Mikey and Halifax organized an awesome Live Tournament in Las Vegas and barely got 50 people to show up.

    No Plabax!
    No Trudatman!

    :amazing:

Yeah, our sweet beautiful game looks like its reached the end of its incredible competitive lifespan.

It could bounce back, but thats looking pretty unlikely at the moment as like you said, this has been 6 months with no pulse.

Theres a whole lot of conflicting opinion drama regarding WHAT exactly killed 94s momentum, but to me it looks like a few different things caused a snowball effect of death. Some people lost interest because of 1 thing, others for something else, and then people lose interest because others are losing interest, and we end up with this.

Its especially hard to motivate some of the more competitive people to play when the competition levels are at such a low level.

  2. As almost everybody knows/believes, in 94 (and in all EA sports nhl games) there exists some form of external influence that can and does have an effect on the outcome of games. Whether its momentum, ice tilt, randomness, nobody really knows for sure. Almost everyone agrees that something along those lines exists and has a big factor on wins and losses, with only the very rare wacklord believing in a truly fair and balanced game at all times.

Getting to the point, I was having a discussion with plabax about whether or not you truly have a chance at winning EVERY single game if you played well enough. I believe that while in most games your play has a big influence on the outcome, occasionally there are games where it is actually impossible to win as long as your opponent is semi-competent. This is what im calling the BS factor.

He agreed with me that this exists, and i asked him how frequently he thinks it happens. We both agree that this happens far more frequently than 1/100 games.

My theory is that most games have SOME level of imbalance in regards to tilt/momentum/whatever, but most of the time it isnt heavily tilted 1 way. Like some games could be relatively 50/50, some 60/40, but every now and then you get an 80/20 or 90/10. Of course in most of those its possible to win if you outplay your opponent enough.

This could explain why game 1 of a playoff series could be a 3-2 win and game 2 a 10-0 blowout loss. Of course theres more to it, but this is just a theory.

Anyway, do you guys agree that games of 94 do exist that are relatively impossible to win against a semi competent opponent? If so, how frequently do you think this happens?

  3. Cool concept about matchup cards. These would basically all be fine for noobs, but a few that stand out to me as arguably unfair are:

MTL DET (montreal has weak offense and detroit is just way too powerful. DET is an A+ team whereas MTL is a B team imo)

STL NYR (not trying to be biased here, but new york has a star center with decent wingers, that can speed by st louis' turtle speed players. The blues have brett hulls shot and nothing else)

EDM NYR (edmonton is terrible other than klima and ranford, with bad home/away advantages. Especially hard for noobs to have to use guys like craig simpson as wingers, plus those fatass defensemen)

HFD PHI (hartford has the lamest average joe fwds ever, they only stand a chance if you can utilize ZZ's beastly cb check. philly has a bootleg star in recchi with a good sidekick eklund, they at least have a decent offense)

I would hate to be LA vs DAL but that's more bias than anything, its a fine matchup

I would also recommend noobs to avoid the lower level teams as its hard for a noob to score with a team like washington or nyi. Plus its just more fun and fast to duke it out as chi det anyway

That is typical of Canadian internet. It's an optimization for the network I think. Anyway, you can play these games on a 33.6kbps modem if your ping is low enough.  2.5mbps is 80000x faster than that. Like Raph says, it's all about low/consistent latency and no packet loss, not high throughput.

damn dude maybe i should look into dialup lollll

Speaking of, when is your fiber optics cable getting installed?  I know your jonesing for some 94 action.

Also as far as exis go, if you know how to go about it you can get plenty of exis in, it's just not as easy like it was 2 years ago when there were 5 guys on at least from 7 PM to Midnight almost every night.  But I spent 6 nights in a row looking for exis from 7 PM till 5 AM, and got some action at various times each night including 2 great 2v2 sessions.

Haha theyll never install it in this town. I wont have legit internet until i move out of mommy and daddies house, which seems like never

Yeah thats true, but you know how finicky seth is about his exis. Like he will exi anyone, but if he doesnt get practice against top players in current leagues then he has mental breakdowns

  6. Its okay brutus I understand. I guess I was more trying to say in hindsight that maybe we should have focused on vet retention all through the years more. But I know its neither here nor there as theyre all pretty much gone

Yeah this forum does sound a lot like the real world rn. I mean I totally understand getting rid of the usage of "gay" "retard" etc as insults, as I even feel bad when I let one slip around the house. It's wrong and im fully on board with that

I just want to be able to call someone a b***h when I feel its necessary / I want to

  7. Yeah im not sure whats casual about playing in online nhl 94 leagues. If you want casual, get a ps4 or xbox one and play new nhls there, theyre easily accessible.

Using an ethernet cable and hamachi and a crappy emulator and setting up games on discord with a select few people to me isnt casual.

Brutus, I know that 94 is dead right now. I dont play leagues but I still check into this site and see whats going on. Apparently im too negative though lol, if you associate yourself with plabax youre automatically a villain.

Brutus the way you talk is that its totally dead, so just give up if thats the case. Also, if you need to pester people on their cell phone to get them to play their games then theyre not committed enough to begin with.

Smoz, come on man not every post should have to be filled with rainbows of positivity. If you think my post isnt useful, it doesnt necessarily mean that its useless. Just let it be dude, being a moderator doesnt mean you should review every persons post for slight traces of negativity.

I cringe when I read replies to my posts like this, but I cant force myself to refrain from speaking my mind on here. I still love you a-holes tho :(

  8. I think vet retention is more important than noob retention tbh. Lets be real it takes a pretty specific  type of person to be interested in  playing nhl 94 online, and chances are those types of people have stumbled across this site before.

Yeah this site is wack and not easy for newcomers to understand, but if they have the specific genetic combination to wanna play this game online for years, then they probably will make the effort to google the site and figure it out.

I believe we're putting more effort than what its worth worrying about attracting and keeping noobs. The vets are already here (or were before), we should be more concerned with accomodating the soldiers we have.

4 isn't useful... He means when people take it too seriously and aren't friendly, regardless of how good they are. Toxic players and posters who make what should be a game into stressful interactions, drama, pissing contest...

Politically correct forums are no fun :(

I dont think everyone comes here just for dry discussions about the game, and for setting up games / leagues

Trash talk and banter is a big part of hockey in general. I'm not saying that F-bombs should be uncensored or anything, but I feel like every time I open up my mouth Im about to get a finger wagging lol

tldr: I feel like I should be able to tell jballlicker he sucks if I want. I havent even played the guy before and we dont even like the same system, so this aint personal

    Why I stopped playing:

    1) Don't have time to sit around waiting for people to show up.

    2) Don't want to play a game with people around the world that is laggy.

    3) Don't want to play a game in which I have to modify my schedule to meet someone else schedule

    4) The Braggarts and Tryhards

    5) Using AOL Aim....

    1. Yes seasons are too long, it gets tiring

    2. Yes 94 has enough lag issues playing just north american opponents, I know we gotta take what we can get but the added latency sucks donkey nuts

    3. Similar to #1, if the seasons were shorter with stricter deadlines this wouldnt be such a problem

    4. Okay cool guy, if you cant handle losing then we dont need you anyway

    5. Aim is a thing of the past, discord seems to be working well
