  1. After a period of limbo, with a little bit of work during, FVHL is ready to go. The website and forum are currently not up, I wanted to make sure there was sufficient interest before getting those going, but the rules and everything are ready to go. Here are the basic rules, not changed much since the old topic.

    Rules

    Period Length: 5 minutes

    Penalties: On, No Off-Sides

    Line Changes: Off

    Bidding for players

At the start of every season, each team gets a 48 million dollar budget. Then, the coaches will have a set period of time to select their rosters (6 Forwards, 4 Defense, 2 Goalies). This will be done by posting a topic in a sub-forum (one sub-forum for each position) with the player's name. The original post will be the opening bid on the player, and the number of seasons for the player (ex. 7 million/2 seasons). Then, any other coach can step in and place a big higher than the last one. If nobody places a higher bid within a set amount of time of the last bid (lTBD), the topic will be closed, the player will be on the winning coache's roster, and the money will be taken off from his budget (NOTE: If it's a multi-season contract, then the money will be payed in equal payments at the start of every season). A coach will have to be careful of not exceeding the salary cap, or they will be forced to drop a starting line-up player and pick up another with a lower salary.

The max amount of season a player can be signed is currently 2, but may be changed to 3. The idea is to have relatively short seasons so that we can quickly move the league forward in seasons to make sure some of the "innovations" kick in.

    Trading/Free Agency

Of course there is a pre-season trading period, but the big thing will be a trade deadline period (One week) where a certain number of games (most likely 75%) will need to have been played, with any unplayed games resulting in DNPs). During this period, teams are able to switch up their rosters a bit by making trades. Once the period ends, games will start up again. This period will give teams a chance to beef up their team for the playoffs, nab a skilled player to help them make the playoffs, or, in the case where things look grim, nab some good players or draft picks to have a better team next season.

    Updated Player Attributes

Every season the player ratings will be updated, using an algorithm along with other EA NHL games. No need to get into the technical stuff here.

    Player Retirement

A player will be removed from the game when his real-life counterpart retired. For example, Patrick Roy retired in the 2003 season. Since this league would be starting in the 94 season, this means that Roy would be removed from the game in the leagues 9th season.

    Expansion Draft

This is a possibility if the first season of the league is a success and if more interest is generated. It would likely work similiar to an actual NHL Expansion Draft, but smaller scale. New coaches get a team, and since most teams will have the skilled players locked into multi-year contracts, the new coach will get to grab a player from most teams, but of course the coach will have the option to protect players from being picked, to keep their superstars.

    Injuries

This may prove unpopular, but here's how it works. Every player has an "Injury Rating". This rating increases by 2 for every injury the players receives (Game OR Period injury, there is a reason for this, trust me). Once this rating reaches 5, the player becomes eligible for a multi-game injury. It works as follows:

Injury Rating - Probability of injury

    5 - 20%

    6 - 40%

    7- 60%

    8- 80%

    9- 100%

To decide if the player gets injured or not, a very sophisticated technological device will be used to determine if the player gets injured (..okay, a die.) If the player unfortunately DOES get injured, then...

    Injury Rating - Games Out

    5 - 2

    6 - 3

    7 - 4

    8 - 5

    9 - 6

Of course, the rating will go down. It will reduce by 1 for every 3 games played by the team (So you can sit a player if you're worried about him getting injured) without an injury, and will go back to 0 when a player returns from an injury. Again, this may prove unpopular to many coaches, but I personally like it, as it adds just a tiny bit of strategy to the game.

    Draft

Since we're following actual NHL season for player retirement, we obviously have to add new players to compensate. Thus, at the every season, a draft will be held. This will be a one round event, in which NHLers who made their start in the corresponding NHL season (Again, the first season is the 93-94 NHL season, but no draft will be held for the first season). The number of players chosen will be the number of coaches they're are, and obviously the most talented NHLers will be chosen.

As a example, in season 2, some of the players in the draft would be: Paul Kariya, Peter Forsberg, Sergei Gonchar, and so on. The players' stats will be decided using the same algorithm I mentioned above.

    All-Star Game

For absolute fun, probably right after the trade deadline, an all star game will be held. Top 2 coaches from one conference vs top 2 coaches from other conferences, with the top players from each conference filling the teams, for an exciting 2 on 2 dual and bragging rights.

    Season Length/Game Releases/Deadlines/DNPs/Etc.

As said before, I want relatively short seasons. A simple 4 games vs teams in your conference and 2 games vs teams in the other conference will probably be used. This way the league will progress fairly quickly, which is something I'm aiming for.

Games will be released on a schedule, similar to Dmitri's Draft League. I've always liked this idea rather than all games at once, as it keeps the player stats fairly equal, along with conference standings and whatnot. Also makes playoff races look a lot more interesting :P.

There will be 4 deadlines throughout the season (1/4th way through, half way through, trade deadline, end of season). Any games not completed before the deadline results in DNPs. I've always hated these as it leads to arguments on who gets the points. If a deadline is coming up, and you have games not played, there will be a sub-forum to post requests for a player on it. If the player you are requesting does not reply, you get the forfeit win. If he does, but no time can be found for when both coaches can play, a tie will be awarded. If neither player posts a topic requesting the other player, both are awarded losses.

The points system is fairly simple:

    Win - 2 points

    OT Loss - 1 point

    Tie - 1 point

    Loss - 0 points

Hopefully that explains it well enough. If you have any questions, ask away and i'll be sure to clear it up for you. If there is enough players to start this league (I'm aiming for around 12), then the forum and website will go up, and more thorough explanations will be given in the forum.

    So, without further ado, registrations.

  2. smoz, the leafs didn't really give up much in terms of players.

Belak, while being one of my favorite hockey players just because the guy is hilarious and such a fan favorite, isn't going to hurt them at all.

Kilger...he was a good player. Kind of shitty to see him go, but the rebuilding process needs to start.

Hal Gill is worth giving up for some draft picks. Again, the leafs need to rebuild.

  3. As for going AWOL, it's a difficult thing to explain without you guys booing and hissing me out of the community. It's simply this:

I have lost interest in playing 94. Not completely, but enough that a full blown season is too much for me to play in. I can't stress the "play" part enough. I still love the community, and am the type of person who enjoys organizing and planning events for others to enjoy. This is why i've been trying to get my own league off the ground. I'm not going to be playing in GDL again, but i'd be dedicated to being the commish for it. However, like i've said, I don't feel I should be even in the running for candidates. Like I said, if nobody else is stepping up and dmitri does not have the time, i'd be glad to.

For the record, Donch wasn't 'forced' to name a replacement, per-say. I stepped down half because making the deadline would have been a ridiculous amount of games in a short amount of time, and again, half because i've lost interest.

    Commence the throwing of tomatoes.

  4. I am personally in love with EA's NHL 08. After failing so hard for so many years since 94, suddenly making a USEFULL and FUN gameplay addition in 07 with the skillstick, the only thing it was missing was a smooth skating engine, rather than the jerky crap they had. Say hello to 08. With the skating and hitting engine completely reworked, a new one-on-one deke added to the skillstick, and some stellar goaltenders, we now have a game which for once actually rivals the good stuff back in 94. The main difference between these two games would be that 94 is more arcadey, while 08 leans more to the realistic side, but whatever floats your boat.

Basically I am wondering if there are any 360 owners out there with 08 who are interested in either having a tournament or maybe even a league. If so, post your gamertag in this topic, i'll add you, and we'll get this going. If we do a tournament, any team goes, however, if we get enough for a league, I deffinetly call the Leafs.

Please god, let there be some interest in this.

  5. Smoz raises a good point. A lot of people seem to overlook Sundin. Sure, they know he's a good player, but nobody seems to realize that if he actually got some GOOD wingers to play with, he would be a 100+ point scorer for sure. I personally find his 12 or 13 consecutive 70 point seasons almost a miracle, considering his linemates lately.

If Sundin goes to Detroit, it's hard to see them not at the very least making it to the cup final

  6. As much of a rabid leafs fan that I am, I want Sundin to win the cup, so I mostly want to see him go to a team where he could win the cup before he gets too old. Detroit sounds good to me, maybe even the sharks. Come to think of it, Thorton and Sundin sounds pretty devastating. With Cheechoo on that line as well, it sounds like it would be a line to rival that of Spezza, Heatley and Alfredson.

  7. With the deadline upcoming on the 14th, I have to step down from the league. I have studying to get done tonight, and unfortunately I have a hockey tournament to be at all weekend. No way in hell would I even consider even asking for an extension. Donch already pushed it back once, and with only 20 games done, I really don't warrant one.

So good luck to Sebe in the rest of the season, and my apologies to the rest of the league for holding you guys up. For the record, if you ever need any practice, hit me up. I'm open for exhibitions whenever i'm online after this weekend.

  8. The holidays do not last 2 months, no, but the cleanup is certainly been lasting far too long. The last of my family left this morning, so now I spent all today cleaning up the rooms and whatnot. I've certainly been hard to get a hold of lately, but I can guarantee that next week i'll be available as much as humanly possible.

  9. The only two goals which I consider lame and actually bother me when people use them are:

1)The pass-shot from behind the blue line and through the five hole. Honestly, pass shots don't bother me. Those take skill to pull off. But a shot that's taken from a ridiculous position and goes in from THAT far away? Now those bother me.

2)The old "after the whistle goal". 'Nuff said.
