  1. I never noticed this until now; all of the goaltenders in NHL 97 for the Genesis have reversed sprites, which means all of the goalies who catch with their left hand in reality are catching with their right hand in the game, and vice versa for right-handed catchers. Does anyone know why this is?

  2. Yeah, nice work on teh Bure gif. I remember watching a little documentary on him on YouTube and the commentator remarked on his celebration after his first goal. It was something about him learning the North American fist pump and leg kick. Very realistic. <_<

Dude, gprice07, nice play! That reminds me: how do you do a shot block in NHL 95-98 on the Genesis?

  3. Ah, now I see the orange, white, and black in the All Star unis. They just look kinda red, white, and blue, especially since the black is a bit light and isn't as dark as others, like Pittsburgh.

Speaking of the All-Stars, they were still the Wales and Campbell conferences back then, right? I noticed they're referred to as the "All-Stars East" and "West" in 94 and 93 as well, but their names weren't changed until Bettman took over, right? Wasn't that after 94 was released?

I've noticed the uniform errors, but I guess it's easier to live with because the graphics aren't so detailed that you're constantly annoyed by them (unlike certain other EA games <_<).

  4. Wait, didn't High Score Productions do NHL 94 as well?

Anyways, here's my theory: Anyone remember the Sports Illustrated cover saying why the NHL's hot and the NBA's not? Those were the good old times, right? And NHL 94 ruled, right?

Well, remember what else happened? Gary Bettman became commissioner. Then it all went downhill for the league. He changed the names of the conferences and the divisions and expanded the league, eventually turning the NHL into the joke it is today.

I think that once Buttman took over, the quality of the NHL went downhill. Guess what else did? That's right, the games. From then on (NHL 95 and beyond), the quality of the NHL games went downhill with the sport.

    Let the conspiracies commence!

  5. Yes, the color for the eyes are share with the jersey, if I remember correctly.

I fixed this and added tape to the sticks in this patch.

Interesting...Which reminds me: Are my eyes going bad or does the New Jersey banner have green (referring to the original cartridge)? I think that depending on the screen size, the black stripe may look green. And shouldn't their unis be mostly red with the black shoulders, not the other way around?

Also, why is it that the All-Star unis are red, white, and blue? If it was going by the last ASG, wouldn't they be orange, black, and white?

And does it bother anyone that a bunch of the unis look practically the same? For example, Anaheim and Dallas away and St. Louis and New York (both of them) away?

One last thing: Does the Boston away uni look brown to anyone?

  6. I wanna ride the zamboni...

Anyways, is it just me, or do some teams have players with white dots for eyes instead of black dots? It seems like the home team has the white dots (goes with white jerseys, perhaps?), but I'm not sure if that's true because I've had the away team with white eyes and the home team with black.

  7. So this morning I'm sleeping and my little brother wakes me up. I usually get cranky when he wakes me up, but he had good reason too. As soon as I opened my eyes, he shoves a box in front of me. NHL 94 has arrived.

Now I can finally say that I have played NHL 94 on the Sega Genesis. I can also finally say that it is the most fun in a hockey game I've ever had.

    NHL 94 FTW! :)

  8. Forgive me if I sound incredibly stupid, but just how do you choose your team in the playoffs mode? I'm so used to being able to switch from team to team in NHL 97 (a feature that's been in since NHL 95) that I get confused in NHL 94. It seems that I am always assigned a certain team every time and there's no way to pick the other one. Is it even possible to change teams? I'd appreciate some information. :)

  9. FH, it's tough knowing you have lived this much life just knowing the EA NHL series through the eyes of 97. But you've made the best first step you possibly can by joining this community and even more so, you're openness to living life the NHL94 way. Welcome and please feel free to hit me up for a game anytime. AIM info below.

Jeez, you make it sound like I'm an alcoholic trying to get sober. "The first step is..."

Thanks for the welcome. I've heard so much about NHL 94 and I've decided to finally figure out just what makes it so special.

And don't blame me for only having 97! My sister had the wallet and I could barely make complete sentences when 94 came out! :D

Once I've gotten a few games on the Genesis, I'll probably try online. Just don't be surprised when you blow me out. ;)

  10. Hey everyone. I'm FlyersHockey1967, but you can refer to me as "FH" or "FH1967" for short. I'm obviously a die-hard Flyers fan, and I grew up in the Legion of Doom era. My favorite Flyer happens to be Ron Hextall (bought a Nike Authentic orange off eBay last month, my first hockey jersey I might add), as he represented everything a Flyer should be. He wasn't afraid to drop the gloves too.

So, my hockey gaming history starts with NHL 97 on the Genesis. I wasn't that big on video games, but I still got the N64 and bought Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey 98 and NHL Breakaway 98 (really great game by the way). Then, I sort of had this quiet period where I didn't get any new hockey games until the lockout. After the lockout ended, I was itching for some hockey action. That's when I got NHL 06 and NHL 2k6. After hearing so much about the games I had been missing, I finally decided to get the entire series of EA and 2k games, starting from the beginning. For EA, that meant 2002-07 (I don't have 2003, for some reason), and for 2k 2k3-2k7.

But even with all of this new stuff, I still have a longing for good ole NHL 97. I got my dad to fix up the Genesis wires and I was able to re-live all of those great childhood moments in the basement, rushing down there after school to pound away at guys as Eric Lindros and make big saves as Ron Hextall. I also remember having fights. But those fights were so rare that whever they would happen, I would literally scream and call my parents down to see it! I have had many a fun experience knocking out guys for the period. It was just pure fun.

But, my fellow hockey fans, I have a confession to make: I have never played NHL 94 on the Genesis.

Which is why I recently bought it off eBay and I am eagerly awaiting its arrival in the mail so I can really live my childhood! If only the Flyers had held onto Ron Hextall, he'd still be in the orange and black for the game...

P.S. How do you choose your team during playoff mode?
