  1. If that's what the other guys want, I can deal with that.

BTW, do you have a better connection now?

I will eventually. I've had more important things to deal with in the meantime. Once I do get the new computer and all the other upgrades (and more free time), I look forward to destroying the opposition in NHL '94. When the time comes, I'll have to contact Clockwise (the only man ever to defeat me) and avenge that one-goal loss. Oh, Mario Lemieux, if only your one-timer hadn't hit the crossbar in OT!

  2. As for the matter of head-to-head or roto, I truly am fine with either one. I do like head-to-head as well, however. I would not be opposed to switching to a head-to-head format. One thing I like about head-to-head is that the struggling teams are still active because they're trying to claw their way into the playoffs. In roto leagues, the struggling teams just give up and stop logging in (I hate that).

After giving it some thought, I'll switch to a head-to-head format as long as you guys are fine with it. No objections?

The stats shall remain the same, however.

  3. why roto league, head to head is way better and more fun.

Because I'm already in several head-to-head leagues, one of which is my own keeper league. There is a possibility I might invite one or two of you to join the keeper league to replace idle managers who haven't signed up yet. This is the third season of my keeper league. I'll give the last few remaining managers some more time; if they don't sign up, I'll invite one or two of you.

  4. Hello, everybody. Hockey season is just around the corner, and fantasy hockey is here. You are welcome to join my Yahoo fantasy hockey league. It is a roto league. If you are one of those people who sign up just to draft and then you never pay attention to your team or the league, then don't bother signing up.

For those of you who don't understand how roto hockey works...

It keeps track of your stats all season long. Each day, the standings show how many fantasy points you would have if the season were to end that day. There are eight skater stats and eight goalie stats. Last place gets only one point in any stat. The league leader in a particular stat will get X amount of points in that stat, with X being equal to the number of teams in the league.

If there's 10 teams in the league

    1st in stat: 10 points

    2nd in stat: 9 points

    3rd in stat: 8 points

    ...

    10th in stat: 1 point

If there's 12 teams in the league, then the league leader gets 12 points for every stat he is the league leader in.

The key to winning is to rank well in as many stats as possible. You can have the highest-scoring team in the league; however, it won't make your team a winner if you're dead last in every other statistic.

    PIM

I thought I'd clarify before anybody asks: you want MORE penalty minutes. More penalty minutes = more points in the PIM category.

  5. I know this is an old topic, but I actually have a theory on why somebody with 4 shot power sometimes winds up and sometimes doesn't. I've noticed that if two players have an in-game shot power rating of - for example - 68, the player that has a lower stick-handling rating usually doesn't do the full windup; the other player (who has a much higher stick-handling rating) does the full windup! If I am not mistaken, a player's weight also affects it as well (lighter players shoot harder in the original and heavier players shoot harder with the weight bug fix).

Some examples, just so you have a visual idea...

With weight bug fix (so heavier players hit harder)

    Scott Hartnell:

    212 lbs

    66 shot power

    47-62 stickhandling

If Hartnell's stick handling is on the low end, he might not do the full windup at all. In fact, he may or may not do the full windup if his stickhandling is at 62.

If you make his stickhandling in the 63-80 range, then he will probably do the full windup more often than not. If you give him 81-98 stickhandling, then I think his heavy weight and high stick-handling will make him almost always do the full windup, even with his shot power at a lowly 66 or so (it would have to be at least near 70, if not over it).

I don't think the numbers are exactly lying to you in-game when you read their shot power. I think how hard the player actually shoots is affected by his weight, his shot power rating, AND his stickhandling rating. Go experiment and see for yourselves.

  6. I forget what the comedian's name was; I saw this comedian on tv one time who was born and raised in California, but of Vietnamese descent (before anybody dares to answer, NO, it's NOT Jo Koy). He was talking about marriage proposals at sporting events. He says to the audience, "Fellas, please leave a name when you do something like that!"

Apparently, he was at a Dodgers game when a plane dragging a message across the sky read, "MARRY ME, CINDY!" That's it. "Marry me, Cindy". No name of the guy proposing at all. The name of the comedian's girlfriend happened to be Cindy. Apparently, there were a lot of men who had girlfriends named Cindy. He mentioned how the guys in the concession stand lines and restrooms were like, "Who did that? I'm gonna kill that guy!" :P

  7. I believe TruePensFan was in the process of completing the rom you're looking for, but he's been AWOL and MIA since the past summer and I haven't heard anything from him. Fearing the worst, I don't think we'll be able to see the rom unless someone steps up and starts from scratch.

To update on this project: it is still an ongoing project at this time. In fact, I recently started over from scratch. Back in the summer, it was almost completed, only to lose all files to a computer problem. This time, the files are backed up (Thank God for Memorex CD-RW discs).

To accelerate the process, I made sure to have a few players on each team inserted into the game already (the obvious ones like Lemieux, Gretzky, Lindros, Fedorov, etc.). The test games have been fun so far, to say the least. Lindros is running over people with his merciless checking, and he's scoring goals. Lindros and Cam Neely are the best power forwards you'll find in this game. You won't deke out too many people with Lindros, but he has a heavy shot and bone-crushing hits. Lemieux, Gretzky, Fedorov, and Bure are obviously some of the most skilled players in the game. Buffalo's 1-2 punch in goal is amazing with Hasek and Fuhr.

The goalies will have a more deserving OVR rating than the lowly numbers NHL '94 originally gave them, as speed is now part of the OVR formula for goalies (thanks to Smoz for this one).

I look forward to releasing this sometime in the spring. I believe you will enjoy playing it.

  8. I absolutely love NHL 2K10 for the Wii.

As for previous games (after the Genesis era), it's a tough call. I think NHL 2004 by EA Sports would have been perhaps the greatest hockey video game ever, IF it would've had any goaltending. Even after adjusting the sliders and settings to make it as difficult as possible to score goals, it was far too easy to score goals.

  9. I am already liking this conversation.

I just decided to supply people with logic when it comes to the discussion of what city "deserves" an NHL team in the event that Phoenix or Atlanta (or any team in Florida?) relocates. The numbers don't support the 3 locations you've cited..

I apologize for my delusions. I'd love to continue this conversation in an educated manner, as I feel it lends itself to such a conversation.

Keep in mind that the topic is about FORMER NHL cities. That is the context in which my responses were made. As for my suggestions of Hartford and the like; they would be better hockey markets than Nashville, Atlanta, and Phoenix! Would they be better than a 2nd Toronto team? Maybe, maybe not. Dallas has been the exception to the "Me love football and hate hockey!" rule in the south.

If there is expansion in the future, I'd rather see the expansion head to hockey towns like Wisconsin, Maine, the Dakotas, and provinces in Canada.

  10. I'll also add that I don't give a crap how big any particular city's population is. I'd rather go to a town of 20,000 people (of which 17,000 are hockey fans) than to go to a town of 120,000 people (and only 4,000 of which are hockey fans). It's called COMMON SENSE (which Bettman and some owners are severely lacking in).

Most southern markets are terrible for hockey (Dallas has been the exception to that rule). If the NHL is going to continue to expand, then they ought to expand to places where people care about hockey and will attend hockey games. Put a team back in Hartford again! Put a team in Maine, in one of the Dakotas, in Wisconsin, etc. The last thing we need is a team in Podunk or Alburquerque.

  11. "deserves"

Kind of how people say the Saints deserve a Super Bowl title. I am not sure any city is deserving of anything in pro sports, but rather it is earned. Winnipeg lost it's team to Phoenix..... discuss

Discuss? There is nothing to discuss. They didn't "lose" their team to Phoenix. Bettman was bat-crazy about expanding to non-hockey territories; furthermore, ownership of some teams were too cheap to provide any funding for the new arenas they needed. This is what led those cities to "lose" their teams. Look no further than the Hartford Whalers! Their owner was a sleazebag on par with Art Modell or Al Davis. He saw a free arena and jumped at the first opportunity to head there (leaving a loyal fan base behind in the process).

  12. All they do is trap and Kovalchuk is allergic to backchecking. I'm not worried.

That's a misconception about Kovalchuk, actually. His D is much better than it gets credit for, although he will never be mistaken for Bob Gainey or Guy Carbonneau. Frankly, Kovalchuk's skills and his style of play on both ends of the ice fit in perfectly with the Devils' system and counter-attack scheme. Kovalchuk also single-handedly improves their PP; expect Parise to be in front of the net and Kovalchuk to man the point when they have the man advantage.

  13. This is a great deal for the Devils. They gave up some good young players to acquire Kovalchuk; however, Kovalchuk greatly improves their chances of winning the cup this season. More importantly, the Devils can find the cap flexibility needed to afford a long-term contract for Kovalchuk. I don't think the Devils are done dealing yet; look for them to trade Brian Rolson (he's a hair over $5 million on the cap) and/or Dainius Zubrus ($3.40 million on the cap) to put themselves in better position to handle Kovalchuk's contract.

  14. Maybe it has something to do with being banned after only 10 years of play. He was 3rd in History for Battin Average Career. And some season slugging average over ,500 , despite notching less than 10 HR, that's an impressive feat

It's nice to see that somebody else knows a bit about Jackson and appreciates the history for once. Joe Jackson is the greatest left-fielder of all time, period. He was Joe DiMaggio before there was Joe DiMaggio. Contact, power, running, fielding... he was the best. His arm was amazing as well! Banning Jackson for life was one of the biggest crimes against humanity. When you observe the statistics, there was no way that he threw the series. According to Jackson's grand jury testimony, he never got the money; he believes Gandil swindled him and other teammates and took off with the money.

Back in Jackson's day, there were many parks where you had to hit between 460-480 feet just to hit a homerun over the wall. And this was the dead-ball era! Guys like Babe Ruth and Josh Gibson would make a mockery of the HR records nowadays with today's juiced baseballs and sandbox ballparks.

  15. As for the triple deke: it works best with players who have high agility and stickhandling ratings, obviously. It's a shame we couldn't do the "Flying V" as Anaheim in this game. Everybody knows that tying a goalie to the goalposts is an effective way of improving a goaltender's level of play, and the Flying V is an unstoppable play because it mesmerizes the defense!

I've scored goals on the knucklepuck (sort of). I like flipping the puck off the back of the goalie's head sometimes when I'm behind the net. Never gets dull.
