  1. After having a big discussion today, I want to get an opinion from the community if it should be allowed.

Personally, I think its just part of the game and can easily be stopped if you see it coming.

P.S. This is mainly for Gens because I dont know how it works on SNES

With SNES in'93..that seemed to be the only way you could score(before manual goalie)...but in '94, I try to use it sometimes....some guys I've played against will psych you with a cross crease and then spin or pause and go short side....sometimes you can defend by slammin em with the goalie or timing the right moment to make the save or using a d-man to knock em down.

I really don't see how you could argue whether a goal should or should not count anyways.

In your discussion...what was the reason that it should not be allowed?

  2. LOL that's a horrible idea on so many levels...just my opinion.

A B and C that's confusing and unnecessary. 40% make it, thats it. Simple and effective. Like I said, if someone drops out because they know they arent making the playoffs, they dont deserve to be in the league. Period.

Would you rather have 40 or so hard core gamers or 100 players who are half ass'ed into it? I know if I was eliminated from the post season I would look foward to finishing my schedule regardless. Should be about playing and having fun first and foremost, and improving your game.

Regardless as to what the admins decide I, like you, will play my entire season even if there's no play-offs for me.

I hardly think this idea is 'confusing'. Your top 8 or (top 40%) still play in what you would consider the real playoffs. the other 12 still get a chance to play in playoff series and have some fun....I don't see what is 'unnecessary' about that.

  3. My thoughts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't read all the posts in this thread, but I read something about no A & B leagues.

I have to say that A & B are a must, we can't have them all mixed it together.

If you look at the winter league (halifax's) as an example, theres a big gap between the

say top 6 or 7 & the rest of the league. Its leading to lots of blowouts & lots of frustration, which

    will force many to quit.

This game is suppose to be fun, & I hate seeing guys get frustrated. Many games I held back alot to

prevent from blowing people out. Even costs me a game or 2. I don't enjoy hammering people , I'd

rather lose a close one, than win 8-0.

I think all previous year's A players that made the playoffs should be put back into A

Then maybe the Stanley cup winner & runner up in B should get promoted.

Finally, anyone else who wants in A should be forced to play a series against Deer, Kid, Rudy,

they don't have to win, but just make it respectable, & let the elite A guys decide if they can handle the league.

Based on what i've seen...allowing guys to sign up for whatever league they want might be a mistake...I think deer, kid, rudy, schwartz, JotaC should throw a list together of guys they want in the strongest league (they'd have the best idea of the skill level and commitment of coaches for SNES)....then ask those players if they want in....if there's any spots left....then go to pokerchamp's suggestion...any new players interested should have to play those guys...and if 'the committee' doesn't think any of them are strong enough to compete then have a league smaller then 20 teams....remaining players will be put in the other league.

  4. Thank you. I know it's a tough call. You dont want teams quitting early if they are having a bad year, but at the same time it's a move that has to be made to preserve the dignity and meaning of the regular season. And it will weed out those who arent serious about the league (players who are mathematically eliminated, lets say, and dont finish the season, are an example of non-serious league members).

Last year certain players didnt even bother playing at their peak level during the regular season (no need to since every team basically made it in), and thats just not right in my book. Now that won't happen anymore. The regular season will have meaning, and every regular season game will have a playoff atmosphere. Players are going to have to get their ass in gear every game if they wanna make the playoffs, and thats how it should be.

I'm opposed to the idea of only 40% of teams making the playoffs. I think that once guys realize when they are mathemtaically eliminated they will be less inclined to play their games. Yes it SHOULD be a challenge to make the play-offs and that is why ALL teams should make it.....'HUH?' you say.

What I mean is....in a 20 teams league, I would like to see all teams make it....except divide it into groups....and you can do it however you like....perhaps what might make the most sense is having the top 8 teams(or top four in each conference) make the 'A' playoffs....the next 8 play in the 'B' playoffs and the bottom four play in the 'C'.

So you have an 'A'(overall) champion, a 'B' champion and a 'C' champion for each league.

There will still be the challenge of making the top 8 to play in the 'A' league playoffs. Guys will be more likely to play their games since they have nothing to lose. And for those guys that get beat up and finish near the bottom will still have something to look forward to.

I take for example a guy like 'scott stevens = god'. It's easy to tell he loves playing this game and he loses by a lot sometimes but never gives up. He figures he's not gonna make the playoffs in the GENS draft league(im not sure if he did or not) and what does he do?....he sets up a tournament for teams that didn't make it.

Nobody likes to miss the playoffs...but everyone loves playing in a best of 7...because they like the intensity and they have fun.....and isn't what this site is about?...keeping guys interested in playing...attracting new players...but overall whether it be great skill or weak skill, everyone enjoys playing.

Don't forget to 'vote for rory' next year.

  5. I was playing against hokkeefan in SNES winter league...the game was insane...back and forth....it was tied 3-3 and mcsorely got a breakaway with barely anytime left and got tripped...the clock read 0:00...and a penalty shot was awarded!

I had a chance to win it on penalty shot on the last play of the game.

The only thing was i didnt get to take the shot...lol...it showed mcsorely at centre ice for about 2 seconds then...switched to the OT face off..lol....luckily i managed to win in ot.

  6. So myself and Auggie got into OT after i make a comback in SNES winter league. less than 1:30 left barrasso makes a save the tries to pass it out. The pass bounces off nobody (maybe he played it off his own leg) and into the net. The closest player was about a full player length at last away from the net. Worst end ever to a great game.

tough break pimp...i know what you are talking about though...its a rare occurance...I've had the goalie do that to me before as well.

  7. Here is some of the lingo I used to use back in the day...

Nano’d – Short for Nanosecond. When taking goalie control (Genesis), the Goalie is absolutely retarded and highly susceptible to being scored on for a Nano-Second (more accurately, about a millisecond) right before you actually get control of him. During this time frame, goalie save percentage plummets and goals are often scored. (example: I gotta take GC faster. That bastard just nano’d my ass.)

Show and Tell – This is a goalie control technique where you take goalie control really early on an opponent’s breakaway causing them to try to pull a wild or difficult deke. Then you simply flip back to auto goalie to let the cpu make the save.

Fumble – This is where the goalie appears to make the save. Then shortly after the “active player star” flickers quickly and a goal is scored. This usually happens when the goalie’s back is to the post, but can happen anywhere in the crease. (example: Belfour fumbles yet again!)

No Respect – This phrase is said to your opponent when he doesn’t take Goalie control on a basic text book break away deke, taunting him for not taking control. (Example: What? No goalie control on my breakaway? (I get) No respect!) Its kinda like Rodney Dangerfield used to say.

The Ride - This is when your opponents defender fails to get his skater turned around and skating backwards, and you "ride" his back in for a deke. (example: I rode McSorley's fat ass all the way in for the goal.)

2-Timer – This occurs when a failed one-timer’s rebound touches the shooters stick allowing a 2nd or even 3rd one timer chance. This phenomenon also can occur on a up close slap shot rebound.

Delayed One-Timer – This is when a one timer pass is deflected or blocked but trickles to the shooters stick for a delayed one timer shot.

Typewriter Style - Not necessarily a NHL 94 term but used to describe a players technique for holding a control pad where the index finger and middle finger are used on the right hand for the A, B, C buttons.

Quick Finger (one-timer) - noun or verb: Used to describe a one timer thats unhumanly fast. (example: Nice quick finger. You must be playing typewriter style)

Fat Finger - Used to describe a telegraphed one timer that was obviously missed due to slow fingers. (example: You would have won that in OT if you didnt fat finger that last one.)

Sit and Spin – Coined after the old children’s toy. This is where you find a good spot and plant your guy. Give him a quick 180 spin for either a quick wrister up close, or a slap shot out far. I probably should make a video of this one for a better explanation

Friendly Nudge – This is where your opponents C check attempt only pushes you into better shooting position. This occurs on both Slap Shots and Dekes. (example: Thanks for the friendly nudge. I don’t think I coulda pulled off that deke with out you!)

God Mode – There is a glitch in the game (gens) where you cannot “C” check a skater twice in a row. It’s hard to explain, but try hitting the same guy twice in a row with a C check after the whistle. It simply does not work. Hint: This can be used to your advantage. (example: He kept trying to hit me but my skater was in God Mode and scored an easy one.)

Cheese Dick – adjective: Used to describe dishonorable tactics or games. Example 1: You have to resort to cheese dick crease cuts to win? Example 2: He ran the clock on me for a cheese dick win. noun: Someone who resorts to “cheese dick” tactics to win a game. ie: running the clock for a win, crease cutting, pass goals. Example: Nice crease cut cheese dick!

Ram – This is the dirty cheese dick tactic of nudging, pushing, checking your goalie into the post forcing the opposing goalie to fumble the puck into the net.

Spin the Wheel - The pregame method of blindly choosing your team by rapidly scrolling through the team list and stopping randomly to make your selection. (All-Stars, Chicago are excluded)

LOL...nice work!....the 'no respect' one is my fav.

  8. Hello everyone,

Paul aka as 'augie' on the forums(not to be confused with the Auggie that played in the SNES fall league) wanted to start a league so I decided to offer some help.

    Here are the league rules

1.Any coach can play any coach at any time to a maximum of 6 games(3 home, 3 away).

2.any teams can be used except all star teams(you can play the same team vs the same team)

    3.penalties on

    4.no offisdes

5.rules 2 through 4 are negotiable if both coaches agree to an alternative

6.ALL GAMES are 5 minute periods.

7.There are NO ties...keep playing until there is a winner.

8.minimum of 20 games to qualify for the playoffs regardless of record.

8.standings will be based on winning percentage rather then points.

10.Jan.31 is the deadline for 'regular season' games.

11.play off format will be determined at a later date(depending on number of entries)

Augie has agreed to look after the standings as well as GF's and GA's for the coaches and I'll look after the playoffs schedule.

    the advantages of this format...

    1. you never have to worry if guys will be online to play their games...you play whoever whenever you want.

    2. since there is no amount to number of entries...new players can sign up at any point

    3. no complaints about who has what team...since they can use whichever team(pittsburgh vs pittsburgh)

    4. a lot of guys play exhibitions games now...log your games here if ya like.

    5. some guys might log 50 games and some making the minimum 20...but playoffs will be based on a winning percentage so you can log as many games as you want.

Post your name below to be apart of the league along with your aim and you can start playing right away.

    Coaches name:

    Aim:

Post your scores in the ‘confirm score’ subforum…an example will be provided.

    Thanks and enjoy!

  9. Id like to play you on the Genesis version and prove that you can beat me just using Goalie Control.

It's been a while since ive played the genesis version....but if my memory serves me correct the manual goalies are way different between SNES and genesis.

What im saying is, I've won games that i didn't deserve to win simply based on my play with manual goalie...and had guys steal games against me based on their play with the manual goalie. That is what i like about it NHL94 compared to some of the other games I've played. Of course im only refering to the SNES version.

  10. So even though one was won by forfeit, hokkeefan wins the Cup despite trailing 3-0 in two different series along the way?

    That's unbelievable!

Has that ever happened before in the history of ANY kind of sport or fantasy sport or anything like that?

    WOW!

to add to those comments...this guy faced elimination 12 times the playoffs(both gens and snes...13 if you count the forfeit game 7 win)....but 12 times he faced elmination..and 12 times he won...I don't know if that will ever come close to be beaten....
