Any idea when your season opener rom is begin released?

I’m out of town until Wednesday, so once I get back it’s a matter of how fast I can work finalizing rosters based on opening day squads.  Hopefully just a few days.

Love it, as always!  Thanks so much!  I absolutely love the idea of having a version with the reverse retro uniforms!  Just a SMALL change I noticed...apparently the Penguins are wearing their white helmets with their reverse retros after all (boo).  NHL 21 just recently made this change.  Any chance this version sticks around as an alternate version once I'm assuming you switch the jerseys back to the teams' "regular" ones?  Also, (a pipe dream, since I'm totally ignorant as to how to do such things) any chance we could see the teams' reverse retro logos on the menu screens to go with such a version? That'd be awesome.

I will update the jerseys when the season starts. I was using screen shots from NHL21 as a guide for pants and helmets, but will verify everything for the 1.0 release.

I will probably not do a normal version and a reverse retro jersey version, or have retro logos. I like having the reverse retro jerseys this year to mix things up and make this year's ROM unique, and I don't have the interest or time to maintain parallel versions.

  3. The music definitely works. How to set it up depends on the file format of your Sega CD iso.

You could have an iso plus a bunch of mp3 files. It could be bin/cue files. I have all my Sega CD games converted into chd files.

So yeah, it definitely works, but the 'how' gets a little messy.

  4. 1.21 (trade deadline) update now available in this post:
    -Rosters/lines as of trade deadline
    -Ratings updates
    -New title screen
-v1.21 uploaded to remove Vesey from Leafs

    ZsfONCc.png

    Okay, 1.0 release is ready!

    The usuals:
-Updated rosters, logos, graphics, and player portraits for all NLC starters
-clockwise sprite hack, smoz 3-stars hack, weight bug fix, and speed burst set to 75% of original rom
-Several graphic hacks for crease, benches, goal light, faceoff boxes, etc...

    Unique to this year:
-All teams are using reverse retro jerseys to replace their away/light or home/dark as applicable! (see screen shots)
-COL, MIN, and WPG with special anniversary center ice logos
-Players who are out long term but may return at some point (Toews, Kucherov, Tarasenko...) are on the roster but on the bench. Players out for year (Klefbom) removed from roster.

All feedback always welcome! I do not plan on doing constant updates, but may do a quick 1.01 update for bugs (and/or if Dubois is traded in the next few days)

Marc, who was St. Louis finished the regular season with a 2.33 GAA.  That's amazing.

Man, this stuff was a blast from the past. I think I did three seasons, and I really don't remember that first one with St. Louis at all.

I do remember season 2 I was the number one seed with Calgary but lost in the first round of the playoffs because kgman was a late replacement coach and he turned the league upside down.

I won my third season after that epic 7-game series in the finals against kgman, although I'll be the first to admit there's an asterisk on the title because I was using Chicago...

I guess I was 25 at the time and in law school. Of course then I retired from competitive play and switched the rom making side LOL.

  6. I would be interested to know if really just made a hacked rom, and if they are running it on an emulator. If so, I wonder if the rom can be extracted from the game. This was the case for Aladdin/Genesis re-release earlier this year on Switch and PC for their 'final cut' version of the old game.

Second, I'd be interested to see EA's player ratings and compare notes with my roms.

  7. I have a few roms in my collection that are not in the master list.

I did 2 of them as multi-season combined roms where each team is boiled down to 9F and 6D of their most prominent players over the period of a few years. Kinda weird I know.

There's also a "10th anniversary rom" (2004), which was one of the first rom hacks I ever got from this site. It seems primitive now because the makers didn't have all the tricks and software people figured out a few years later.

There's a 2006 hack from Mack, a guy who used to have his own site for 94 hacks, and I have 08 rom and I'm not even sure who made it!

They're all in the zip file here.

Hey, did you make it so the file can't be opened in Nose?

Wondering if I could use some of the data for an SNES update.

No, it should work in NOSE. I do all the editing in NOSE version 1.2b from here:

  9. I did something very similar to the original request here with my historical 'deadline' roms .

Basically it gets all the benefits of new hacks (weight bug fix, better looking and more accurate uniforms, period accurate creases/lines on ice, player pictures for all starters), and sets rosters as of the trade deadline for the season.

    I did 87, 89, 92, 94, 95, 97, 99. Sorry, no 93 which would actually be the specific season requested here!

Sorry I’m a month late to the party here, but I’m so glad to see the King back at it! No disrespect to any of the other awesome modders out there, but in my opinion, Naples’s work is the gold standard. Awesome work again this year! Another Pens fan here...the only small “mistake” I could find is that Jack Johnson changed his number from 73 to 3 this year. Simple enough fix in NOSE for me, just something tiny to throw in the next update. Hopefully we get a “Deadline 20” edition ROM this year (hopefully your life has calmed down!!). I live for that ROM every year and have played through the throwback ones with accurate playoff brackets MANY times!

A post-deadline update is definitely in the works with roster updates, ratings tweaks and bug fixes!

Ah, ok thanks for the explanation on the ratings.  Makes sense if based mainly on last season's Save Pct.   As an aside, being a NY Rangers fan they are a ton of fun to play with!

There's a method to the madness, although it's kind of loose, and may or may not be the best way to do it!

Ratings are kind of rolling and I'm always tweaking them. When I do a new season rom it just starts with updating the old one, so most of the player ratings receive little or no change from last year. If a player is significantly trending one way or the other, or I think I missed the mark before, his rating may look very different the next season.

For goalies, it's mostly based on old school goalie stats like GAA and save percentage. Those are in many ways team stats, but that's okay because when you boil "team defense" down to a game like 94 often it just means making their goalie really good.  There's also some subjectivity and history in the ratings too, because right now big names like Bobrovsky, Lundqvist and Price are probably rated more highly than their current stats would provide based on their career history, so there's always grey area.

Great ROM, thanks so much for all the effort putting this together!

I did notice that both SJ goalies were both rated 50 in the game?  Seemed like a mistake (at least for Martin Jones) and wanted to let you know.

    Thanks!

    -Evan

Not a mistake, at least not an oversight...

I'm primarily basing goalie ratings on save percentage, and the Sharks were dead-last last year and are currently third from last this year in that category!  During this period Jones and Dell are 54th and 58th out of 59 goalies respectively in save percentage

Great rom by the way.  I actually tried playing this from a MegaSD Flash cart and Nomad.  The 32 team freeze bug also happens when I am in the menu cycling through Washington's team portraits and in the matchups' screen whenever the Capitals are involved (attached pic below frozen only showing half of Doc Emrick's face).  Oddly enough, it doesn't freeze when I do this on the Kega Fusion emulator on PC.  Not a big deal but just an observation.

Probably a bug in the rom template that only happens on real hardware. Nothing I can do about that one. Sorry!

  14. I just discovered this thread, although I've often had similar thoughts about a groundup re-make.  It was more in the line of "if I win the lottery and have several hundred thousand or more dollars to play around with" for a pet project.

My thoughts on such a re-make would be start with re-creating the game as closely as possible, then add:

-Robust team/player editor making it easy to share teams/players/logos/goal horns-songs... (would be amazing to start a game by choosing team, then choose roster year, then choose uniform....)
    -Online play, maybe leagues
    -Enhanced sprites
-Enhanced gameplay options/sliders (bigger rink, lane filling on offense so Ws and Cs switch when appropriate and wingers will go to slot for one-timers like NHL 96+, options to boost/nerf hit power...passing...etc...)
-More gameplay modes like 4v4, 3v3...

Great rom overall. Like the opening picture of the stanley cup champs my hometown team. The colors on the players and on ice logos are great. My only complaint the wrong jersey number for Robert Thomas on the Blues.

Damn, I hate mistakes like that!

I'll definitely put it on the fix list, but I won't re-up the ROM just yet to fix only one number. Feel free to edit that yourself in NOSE in the meantime (or I can send you a fix if you need it for personal use).

Curious... how much would you charge to make my men’s league team with our jerseys in the game for a custom game?

If you just want to edit one jersey, just send me a pic of your men's league team jersey and tell me which team to put it on, and I'll send you the ROM. It will only take a few minutes.

  17. UPDATE: Post-trade deadline version uploaded below!

So here it is, the 3rd NHL 20 rom that no one asked for, and delivered quite late!

All the usuals from my roms, but to take note:

-Updated logos, uniforms, arena names and rosters for all 31 teams (rosters as of Dec. 2)
-Player portraits for all NLC starters
-Speed burst set to 75% of original rom
-Many graphical hacks such as backup goalies and coaches on bench, net cam, better uniforms...
-Anniversary center ice logos for teams that are using one this year
-Weight bug fix, smoz 3-star formula
-known bug with 32-team rom -- GAME WILL CRASH IF CYCLING THROUGH WPG (TEAM 31) PORTRAITS ON MAIN MENU

Please let me know if you have any suggestions or bugs to report!

How do we edit the stats

You have to use NOSE editing program. There are a few quirks for using it with the new 32-team ROM, but once set up it's basically like editing a spreadsheet. Find it on the site or the forums.

I'd love to see it!  I'm terrible at editing jerseys and have no clue how to update the center ice logos.  Not to pressure you at all or try make special requests or anything, but it'd be super cool to have an outdoor version with the different team logos from the Winter Classic and Stadium Series games, too!

But my real reason for checking in was...is there a "Deadline 19" ROM on the horizon?  I can't wait for it!!

Yes, but my house is under construction and I've been basically living out of a suitcase for the last month. It will be done but I don't know when.

PS: With the Pens playing in the Stadium Series, what are the odds I can talk you into making another "Outdoor " ROM this year, once the jerseys are unveiled? ;)

Possible. It's just takes a few minutes to change a few jerseys.

Actually, it looks like I found a fix: I just copied and pasted the playoff matchups for Naples' 2018 game, seems like it stopped the freezing (now let's just hope I didn't break something else in the meantime!).

    Thanks for the response!

    -Sean

Yes, if the crashing was just selecting playoffs, that is easily fixed. I forgot about setting those!
