Yes, this is true. As I said early I wish this would have existed earlier, however I do not see that this is the sole fix to the problem. The problem as a whole is much larger. Who knows how many of the coaches were losing interest due to slack/lengthened seasons or just because it was time. Old players will always move out and some will come back, but if there is no new pool coming up, that's the problem and things will eventually just quiet down. I have seen this happen before multiple times.

Yes, true.  But we KNOW why some are leaving, so it's best to try to attack the issue we're aware exists as we have voices speaking out about it.

There is the problem, if only such leagues would exist there would be very little left for casual players and that cuts the elite leagues from pool of players as well and things would only wither down. Only that model is a result for a dying game. NHL94 has been around for 20+ years, nothings gonna happen to that, even if one online community would fall, somewhere it's still played and a communities can rise again. Been there, seen that. I have seen communities of old games die off a couple of times and it always starts with low player pool and elite players not being satisfied with how things are with the rest.

There's a rule in business that states that it's much easier to keep your existing customers than to try to gain new ones.  I think it applies here.  If you lose or alientate your core constituency, you're doomed and will always be in rebuild more.  But maybe we'll just have to agree to disagree.

If casual players are left out, things will only wither out and die slowly. I have witnessed this type of thing in multiple old gaming communities where elitist approach cuts themselves off from a pool of new possible players and it stays alive but little by little withers away as no new players get in.

But the opposite has been occurring.  The casual players who continually refuse to change their behavior or just unable for whatever reason to adapt, are the ones driving away the committed coaches.  The coaches who are the most serious about fixing things are the ones who will leave when their complaints and suggestions aren't considered.  The casual people will always be around because they could care less either way, strict league, lax league, anything goes for them.

I have seen (some of) hokkee's posts to that effect.  I think those are all good ideas. (I am not sure if you cherry picked.) But some of his "message" may have been lost in some very erratic, possibly drunken/high (or manic) posts he left, too. (Not to belittle a battle with the bottle, or mental issues.)

The thing is, it is like herding cats trying to get change around here.  It is slow, or doesn't happen at all.  That is just the institutional culture here.  Unfortunately.

I think the best approach is exactly what you are doing: Make your own league, with your own rules, and enforce it as you see fit.  I like your small, tight, quick Plablegs league, and I like your strict enforcement of the checkpoints.  (I recognize it is a personal preference, and people have differing viewpoints.)  You have taken action, and that may affect real change.  That is the right approach.  Lamenting on what could have been is a waste of time. :)

agree with 95% of it.  Aqua understands.  JJ too.

  5. Plabs is trying to change the culture around here so that it's more efficient.  Hokkee had the same goal but his style was brash and he became a joke to some people.  Plabs created his own league specifically for this reason, as many of us who feel the same have had our pleas and suggestions ignored.  Look at the GP completion of Plablegs.  It's a thing of beauty.  Many of us love it the setup of it, and loathe the unpunished slacking, dragged out seasons that have become the norm here for a long time.  It takes the fun out of for a lot of guys.  This place is losing coaches (and will continue to) and nothing has been done to try to stem that tide.  What a shame it was to lose Ba55ist, a great dude and coach who was quickly increasing his skill level.  He decided it just wasn't worth the time investment given how inefficient the leagues were.

Although Plabs created it, Plablegs is as much my "baby" as it is his.  This is why Plabs "picked" who he wanted in his league and exactly why it's been so efficient so far.  You don't play your games in time? Over the wall you go!  Atrocious connection that tortures opponents? Over the wall you go!  Disappear for weeks at a time and hold things up? Adios amigo.

The design of Plablegs and management of the league has been a breath of fresh air.  It's been inspiring to see what can be done if expectations are established and enforced.  For some of us, it's like "hey, maybe we can change this place for the better".  Then Brutus makes his league that reverts back to the old ways, and I think Plabs feels like the progress has been undermined.  Sure, Brutus can make whatever league he wants and his intentions are good.  People will join and most likely have a lot of fun. Yet it doesn't change the fact that it seems like we're going backwards and the wind has been taken out of the sails.  The ones who have been demanding a change in culture are once again alienated.  At least that's how I feel.

This site is dying and none of you can see it happening.  The community should have listened to hockey.  They still don't get it and it seems they never will.

  6. Plabs is a stickler and I think everyone knew that going in.  Those who made playoffs played all their games, as was required.  There was some leniency built into the league also, by means of meeting consective checkpoints (erased prior strikes).  I echo Aqua's statements in that he's awarding us some leeway because we got 100% in regular season.  He trusts we won't make a mockery of playoffs.

I know Ice was trying so that sucks.  I was hoping he'd be able to get those last games in the day of the checkpoint because the hammer didn't come down until early evening.  However, myself and Plab were also trying in classic, yet we didn't get enough games completed in time to make playoffs.  There were players I needed to play that flat out refused to respond to multiple communication attempts by me (asking for time slots to play).  In many past seasons, there have been extensions in classic (which I wasn't a fan of).  This time there wasn't.  Kind think we lucked out given what happened in playoffs.  Nevertheless, I was excited to be using CGY, looking forward to the post-season with them and bummed when I saw I didn't qualify.

Anyhow, I love this league and I'm spoiled by it.  I trust Plab will make the right calls going forward if there are any issues.

Lol your the only one who has a complaint about my laptop (well out loud maybe others do to, but haven't said anything).  I don't have an Ethernet port on my laptop so every game I've ever played has been over wifi, I bought a USB to Ethernet adapter, but haven't set it up because I don't have a long enough Ethernet cable to reach my laptop from where my modem is set up, and also 90% of the time when we played I was at work using a optimum hot spot wifi signal, and you never once quit because it was bad, and I know you won't waste your time if the game is to laggy so my connection using my laptop on an open public cable hot spot wasn't to laggy for you to quit I don't think it's my laptop.  We've only had a bad connection since you had to swap your laptop with someone else's because you couldn't get netplay to work on your own with new Kaillera, and after that was the first time I ever noticed a bad connection between us so maybe it's your new laptop.

you're using Wifi still, Jesus H Christ dude!   Think we've found the culprit.  Shouldn't even be allowed to play in leagues with that shit.

Seth claims it's cause he is such a spaz trying to C check that he ends up shooting the puck down the ice on "accident", but I don't believe him.

I have no reason to lie about anything in 94.  Believe what you will.  This thread has reminded me that I haven't been doing a lot of this strategy on purpose lately.  I'll have to start incorporating it because it's very effective.  Loft right over your D and catch it as it hits the ice.  My unintentional ones are risky and detrimental, I admit that.  I have no tolerance for playing against Brutus anyway, his laptop is not sufficient for gaming and causes a sanctuary lag-city.  Even my games vs AJ and Depch are buttery smooth since I bought a new PC last year and upgraded to fast internet.  Some of you people's laptops are laughably inadequate and cause the same problems (I won't name any other names, cough cough Lupz and a couple others).

Basically if you don't know how to do B-check effectively you are screwed and it will still be hard vs the stickhandlers. If you're lucky you get one of the 4 weight D-men and you can then play effectively against the 6+ weights, but there are still plenty of threats below that weight. You also know it's gonna be real hard to throw a B-check to any of the lower weight guys on middle coming for a ontimer if you're not in a position to intercept the pass. There are so many offensive threats and so few good defencemen to stop them. It's essentially a skating festival and team matchup plays a great deal of importance as well. I think CB does a great favour to balance the Classic game out.

    Depch gets it.

For the life of me, I just don't understand why someone would be against CB. Nor do I understand how it makes things unfair, or uneven.

CB checks are a "fix" that makes heavy guys check the way they were meant to.  There is nothing cheap about it.  If there were no weight bug in the game, a CB would just be a C, like it is for light guys.  If anything, CB enables players to perform as intended, and not be handicapped by a stupid glitch.

Furthermore, they simply are part of the game.  For everyone.  You can choose to be proficient at them, or not, but they are a technique available to all.  As well, we do drafts that are designed in such a way as to let everyone pick a team as they see fit.  You can draft good CB checkers, or focus on speed or shooting -- whatever -- it is up to each coach.  Again, no inherent advantage to anyone.  It's an equal playing field; draft whom you see fit. It's equal.

Bottom line: I really tried to understand what was cheap, or wrong about CB Checks, and see those arguments for what they are: nonsense.

  11. I'm sure those that are going will have a blast and I'm glad it's being done again.  However, it's disappointing to see it being moved to Vegas, as the hotbed for hockey and this game couldn't be further away.  I'd imagine the majority of those who were in Toronto will not be going out to the desert for this one.  Shame, because so many dedicated dudes from this site went to the first one since it wasn't too far.  Northeast or great lakes region would have been ideal for the greatest number of dedicated players and talent.  Just my two cents.

  12. Wow that a thread.  So many comments I don't even know where to start.  Actually, there's no need for me to really, as I agree with pretty much everyone's viewpoint on CB (except for Plabs).  Funny though because I share the vast majority of the same stances Plabs has on other issues related to 94.  But CB is where we become polar opposites.  In the end, I did comment, and it provided no value other than mild entertainment and fullfilling the urge to chime in.  In other words, you wasted your time reading this and I wasted mine typing it.

I'm eager to comment on this "closing the gap" idea, but my take on it isn't the most encouraging opinion and I'm running on fumes right now..... so it's adios time.

One tip -- when the puck goes behind your opponents goalie, ONLY go in if you think you have a legitimate shot at obtaining the puck (most likely not).  It drives me nuts when people fly in with all their forwards (sometimes d-men!) and smash around behind the net.  It's a surefire way to get all of your players out of position.

Now who in the world would do stuff like this?

You can't have 30 second penalties.

I will never play another game with penalties on. They are the worst thing ever.

    +1

I too have no tolerance anymore for the bingo wheel aspect that penalties bring.

I'd also like to see slackers not allowed in future leagues.  I certainly can't see myself getting excited about any league where these fools are allowed to pollute again.  Actually not sure I'd even join if they are.   Or better yet, put them all in their own league where they can take as long as they want, no deadlines of any sort.  Allow them to bask in that moat.  Then no one else will have to deal with it but them, and they'll have no right to complain.   Maybe they wouldn't even complain, who knows.  They seem to hate being pressured to play their games anyway.  End of rant (for now).

  15. The best way to goose-up your opponent and get games played is to publicly call the series in your favor before it even starts. Remember the Dickon/Dickoff finals drama from a few years ago. Took about 6 weeks for it to happen.

  16. The celebration of Festivus begins with the airing of grievances.

    Prepare for a slight sidebar.....

I'd volunteer to fill in (with CGY) if the league wants a series to happen to decide to plays Raph. I knew that Classic (end of reg. season) deadline was coming, I just didn't bother to do the calculations (or look for a thread containing them) and see if I'd make it in or not. I was surprised I didn't make them. But that is my fault (partially). However, I missed out on 4 easy wins vs Donnybrook with him going MIA. Not the first time that's happened w/that jagoff. And despite some people being "on" they often don't respond to IM's looking for games.

Aside from that, the culture has allowed slacking to flourish here over the years so it's hard to pin blame at any one individual (in certain cases). Bring on the Plablegs!

  17. Congrats AJ.

But my vote goes to Brutus. He ran an incredibly tumultous GDL season, with loads of drama and babysitting. He handled various conflicts and resolved them. He made about 12 replacements for coaches who couldn't keep their committment, all the while keeping the balance and integrity of the league in tact. The draft alone was lengthy and took a ton of work and constant monitoring. GDL was a struggle and he kept it alive. I know the live tournaments are all the rage these days as they are fun as s**t, but the core of this site lives online and GDL is the golden child. If it fails, there would be long-lasting negative effects IMO. Brutus steered the ship and kept it afloat.

My other vote goes to the infamous and polarizing Plabax. He won his 3rd GDL title, which no one has ever done. In addition to that (and more important to a lot of us), he has created and is running a new draft league called "Plablegs". It incorporates all of the rules many of us have been asking for (forever), with no penalties, static ratings, fewer coaches and hence more talented players to draft from. There no slackers, harsher penalties for missing deadlines and incentives to make them. He tweaked the goalie ratings to make it a more even playing field and put in quicker access to goalie control. Furthermore, he created the fix that allows penalties to be off but B-check still enabled. This has revitalized a base of 94'ers on here that were demanding something different.

Shoutout to Raph too, for all the stats and graphics work he does for the roms and leagues.

But where is our Christmas video from Brute this year? The boys are lost without it.
