    SEASON RULES

    Alignment

There will be 2 conferences of 2 divisions of 6 coaches for a total of 24 coaches. Each coach will play 56 games:

    • 4x (2H,2A) against the 5 coaches in their division for 20
    • 2x (1H,1A) against the other coaches in the other divisions for 36

    Checkpoints

There will be 8 weekly checkpoints of 7-game intervals (7,14,21,28,35,42,49,56). There will be a main thread on the forums and a league-wide AIM group for scheduling. Failure to reach checkpoints as a result of slacking will result in these penalties:

    • 1x - A total drop of 8 slots between snake picks in next season's draft. Example, A player who would normally draft 22nd/3rd gets penalized to 24th (2) / 9th (6) (2 + 6 = 8)
    • 2x - A total drop of 20 slots between snake picks in next season's draft. Example, A player who would normally draft 12th/13th gets penalized to 22nd (10) / 23rd (10) (10 + 10 = 20)
    • 3x - Automatic boot and restriction from playing in the next season.

Any player who fails to hit a checkpoint as a result of real-world conflicts (i.e vacation, birth of baby, etc.) will not be penalized, but will still be replaced if three checkpoints are missed.

    Playoffs

There will be a vote for the playoff format! Below is the current tiebreak system.

    Divisional Tiebreaker Hierarchy

    • 0 Forfeits
    • Head-to-Head record
    • Division record
    • Goals scored in head-to-head competition
    • Goals scored on the road
    • Conference record

    Conferential Tiebreaker Hierarchy

    • 0 Forfeits
    • Head-to-Head record
    • Conference record
    • Goals scored in head-to-head competition
    • Goals scored on the road
    • Division record

A minimum of 48 games is required to qualify for the playoffs. Forfeits will be assigned In the case of any games between 48-56 resulting in a DNP. The seeding will then be determined. Playoff home-ice advantage will be unavailable to all players with a minimum of one forfeit, unless both parties in a playoff series have one. In that case the higher seed will be awarded with home-ice.

Teams will have 6 points added to their season total for each game unplayed at the conclusion of the season for GDL XIV draft order purposes.

Each round will last one week. If you go on vacation... bring your laptop :)

    Minor Rule Changes

    • A point will no longer be awarded for an overtime loss
    • The new kailleraclient.dll will be the standard

If you are on the waitlist or would like to go on the waitlist, reply in this thread. You can find the list below.

*In the case of a very skilled player dropping, a player of exceptional status will replace them, regardless of waitlist position. If there are multiple coaches in the waitlist with exceptional status, then the order on the waitlist will follow.

  3. "I only play league games"

-- me, 1000 times on AIM

got thangs ta do, being all growed up sucks

Not everyone on here is trying to be the best or even their own best

That's the motivation behind A/B leagues and drafts that pump up the less-skilled coaches' teams. To just keep things competitive for whatever your skill level is. (when I made Blitz, anyway)

You can play for fun and still improve.. it's not an excuse. You can't just sit back and accept that you will never be "good enough" because you aren't trying to be the best.

You can say "I don't want to be the best, but I CAN be the best"

You can't say "I don't want to be the best so I will NEVER be the best".

There is a big difference between the two. The latter is discouraging.

No matter who you are, family or not, even if you play 25 minutes a week - If you think you CAN improve and you know what it takes.. you'll improve. If you think you will never improve, play all you want and it will never happen.

You don't need to play x amount of exis, in fact, you don't even have to play exis at all. It's not some extreme committment. It's a simple sports game that requires no practice outside of league games. Learn from your mistakes and become better, that's it.

  4. What is with the atittude of the players here? Saying things like "o man I will never be an A player" is just the nastiest way to approach the game of NHL '94. Where is the confidence?

Let's take a look. NHL '94 is a simple game. You move your players and press two (sometimes three) buttons. It's not hard. Now I could understand finding a game like Street Fighter to be tough, where one must memorize hundreds of button combinations and precise timings to be a good player. But for a game so dumbed down like NHL '94, how could someone say they will never be good?

It all has to do with confidence. You need to have some faith in your play. Nobody is unbreakable, anyone can be beaten. If you really think you are inferior to your opponent, you are going to lose every time. I promise great improvement to any player who does not carry around the shitty attitude of "I will never beat kingraph, plabax, Freydey, etc.". It's not only about wanting to win, it's also about knowing you can win and playing against those who are better than you. Even if you find yourself on the wrong end of blowouts, do not get discouraged.

Losing big is a blessing. When you lose big/often, there is something in your game that is being exploited. The key is to find out what it is and use it to grow. This is what separates the good players from the bad ones. A good player will make the same mistakes on defense 20x, realize it and say "I'm going to be so much better once I can comfortably defend against my main weakness; I know I can compete". A bad player will keep making the same mistakes and say "There is nothing I can do. My opponent is way too good for me".

For the record, I played in FOUR different B/C leagues before I actually became a standard-A player. I never played with those who were better than me until Raph's Survivor league. I was in complete shock at the amount of talent some of the guys had. I am not going to lie, I really thought I wasn't good enough once I got blown out for the first time. However, I stayed confident and I kid you not I made my transition from scrub to an A player in the span of seven weeks. I ended up taking out the Blitz B champion in five games and played a thrilling seven-game series against Raph in which five of the seven games were decided by one goal. And let me tell you something, I SUCKED at the start of that season. You can find the standings from the forums for proof.

Bottom line... don't think of yourself as inferior! Oh yeah, and never get comfortable!

  5. Playing in B does not = "playing for fun" - When dickon loses and then calls you a hacker, a faggot, etc. I don't think he's playing for fun. This guy cannot stand losing and you are not good enough to challenge him to the point where he gets pissed off. I think he is so content smashing your face in the B league that you haven't experienced any of the s**t.

Dickon has 4 finals appearances in the B leagues.. and the only guys to ever challenge him in the B leagues are Uncle Seth, xdeathsbloodx and myself (A players). Notice how they moved up and stayed up?

He is 56-17 in B-league playoffs, and 13 of those losses have come from the three I mentioned above. It's ridiculous. I am pretty sure he is 36-4 (9 playoff series, 6 sweeps, including 2 in the finals) in his THREE B title runs. Sweeping the opponent 67% of the time is straight deadly.

There is no one running around hosting banners of their glorious B cups :)

because dickon has all his B titles in his signature. He also won't hesitate to take a shot at any player with no titles.

    (for classic)
Being that I asked to be in the B league I don't mind getting a lower pick if it makes the overall competition better

Takes Buffalo the next chance he gets in GENS B.. lol

  6. I'm going to play.

On a side note, don't let Sebe play.

Also, is dcicon really in B? He's actually an A player. It's not the the type of A player that is between A/B. He's A. Dcicon intentionally acts inferior to the rest of the A players and loses on purpose just so he can be relegated to and win B. Is that right? Sorry but, the truth is, dcicon is way more competitive in A than he is in B.

  7. The NHL or any pro league does not use a snake draft, they attempt to "placate the weak."

Sometimes it works....see the Penguins (Crosby, Malkin, etc...)

Sometimes it does not....see the Oilers

If you are "good" handicaps make things more interesting.

I do not like the idea of a static rom.

I like that the players change and perform differently game to game.

It is one of my favorite aspects of the game.

To me if you want things the same and no luck play table hockey or chess.

These are just my opinions, but I will be fine with whatever the league goes with.

At the end of the day a strong leader will just need to make some decisions and deal with the inevitable backlash.

I am excited to return to GDL and build my own team.

    I will not trade.

I would like to move my team to Edmonton. I think Edmonton was replaced last season as well so hopefully that will work out.

Here is the difference. In the NHL, teams who get the last pick are already good so the handicap is needed to try and even out the teams. A good team will typically be good the next season so there is no reason to snake.

In our case, being good does not mean you will have a good team. If we do not snake, the good players will end up with s**t teams every time so it doesn't even serve as a handicap to make things fair.

Also.. sometimes top players meet early in the playoffs. Freydey and TomKabs played in round 1, or swos and flasox. The loser of these kind of series is just going to have a big advantage over whoever was even with them the season before.

  8. If it was up to me, I'd also do the following things for next season. (Static was already mentioned, but here it comes again)
-No trading first round picks / or picks in general + keep an eye on trades involving top 10 players going to contenders. Between contenders vs other A guys it's not usually very much fun if contenders gets a top 10 guy on their roster, it's not everything, but some games it's a lot. This increases disparity even more, which is the reason I think the adjusted draft picks were there to begin with. Also trading picks in general is often beneficial for top players anyways, who are better anticipating when a player will get picked and know the true value of a player. If the mindset in the league overall is that having that knowledge should give you the advantage, then so it should be, live and learn mentality, but then it would be nice from the not so experienced players to ask other A guys their opinions on trades. It's not like it has to be a secret, only people usually having something to gain would like to keep it so. Eklund E5 anyone! :D A trade can be win-win in those situations, but looking at the bigger picture overall, it might just do harm to the league itself. As an example last season Ciccarelli with Kingraph & Selanne with Frey, not saying they would not have gotten as far with them, they were both contenders to begin with Plabax, but it was a real menace against other A guys, such moves increase disparity. I do not like it, it could be a cultural thing to believe it's selfish, doesn't mean I'm right, I just really think the adjusted draft picks are there for a reason to begin with.
-Non snake draft to give weaker players more advantage - The benefit of snake is obviously faster drafting and that snake is traditional. But then again this goes back to the mentality of my first thesis on the trades concerning top players/picks. I could only see most A guys not be happy about this, as it will most likely affect those teams most. If majority thinks snake is fair, then snake it should be.
-Static skills rom - Arguing can be made that the rom should be as vanilla as possible, but it has already been modified, last season we already had a vote about Y-button & CB-check as well. Playing a competive game should have luck reduced as much as possible. It's a b***h if you have your main guys cold for 5 games out of 7 in a playoff series for example or vice verse.

GDL is too big of a league for your garbage. Non-snake? Not everyone needs to have a fair chance at winning. Players who are good at the game have obviously put in the time to be good, so why should they be punished for it? Some players are better than others, that is how it is. Giving others the sympathy of stacking their teams because they can't beat the top A players like me is just giving players who do not deserve to win a better chance to do so.

  9. TomKabs is actually wrong. It's not really probability in some cases.

I was never able to shoot like Brett Hull with Gretzky depsite taking a lot of shots. So it is not probability. Some times a player may shoot it slower but that is a bug in the game and it is not related to stats. If Lemieux has a bad shot, it is most likely because he is cold to the point where his rating is not high enough.

A 4 in stick handling does not mean shake off 1/10 checks. When a player 4 stick handle shakes off a check I am pretty sure they have a hot rating. For me it happens maybe 0.01% of the time.

I am pretty sure higher shot accuracy gives you more AIM. Players with high shot accuracy are able to pick spots that others can't.

    Anyway... static ROMs 4 life!

  10. I noticed this a lot in SNES over GENs. In gens, switching to the player and hitting B often enables you to receive the pass.

For me, it's one of my frustrations I had thought was exclusive to me, so I hadn't posted (other teams seem to move the puck well against me, but maybe they have already learned where to not pass by this time in their NHL94 experience).

In GENS, there is a definite "receiver" ability for the forward, and I don't associate it with the guy making the pass (the pass rating always seemed to play a role inside the zone when making one timer passes, etc), and the bad passers seem to mess that up more than they connect.

But I assumed STICKHANDLING to be the attribute that determined if a guy caught the pass or not.

HOWEVER, in SNES, I found all of them miss this pass for me.

Interesting.. I have never noticed this.
