  1. Unfortunately this project was on a previous laptop so I'm piecing together pieces to try and recreate what I did.

I misspoke, for this particular one I can see that I used Ditherer to get it down to 16 from the original image (attached). However for the life of me I can't seem to recreate the image exactly, although it is awfully close. ATK cubed does get me the closest match.

I know that I've converted images to only use colors that are available in TM before taking the dithering step and have also reduced the number of colors to 64/48/32 if I don't like the result that I'm getting.

  2. Of course it is Ditherer!

One thing that I had been doing was reducing the number of colors in the photo prior to using Ditherer. I can't explain the science behind it but I seemed to be happier with the output.

Sunuva... That was the one I was looking for! Although admittedly I was kind of tired of the Ref by that point.
    Basically:
Hmm, try the white pixels in this section... <broken>
Hmm, try the striped pixels in this tile... <broken>
Hmm, try these two pixels here... <broken>
Hmm, try never minding this bollocks... <never minded>

It just looked to me that the sprites were based on the on-ice players, so I figured they probably just pointed to some of them to save memory.
The good news is that It doesn't seem to affect anything else. This does mean that the benched Rover player doesn't move at all, but it's an okay trade off.

However, now you got me looking at one other thing I was debating doing... Going to conduct some tests. V1.1 update should be ready by tomorrow.

I feel your pain. When I was trying to remove the kickplate in the ref window I would change one yellow pixel to white, save, test.

    Repeat.

    Crash.

    Quit...

  4. Well... Panteleev is an interesting one because it's a Latvian name (Grigorijs Pantelejevs) that was Russified (Григорий Пантелеев) and then Romanized. There are several different ways to convert so Panteleyev, Panteleev and Pantelejev would all be "correct" spellings. IIHF, for example, has rules for how they do it but often it is left to the discretion of the player in an effort to make it closer to the actual pronunciation.

All that said, doesn't seem like there was a whole lot of consistency to how his name was transliterated

  5. Sorry, would like to get to that someday but each ROM takes several weeks just to research and assign ratings and I'm extremely busy with on-ice hockey now that many COVID restrictions are being eased.

Definitely planning more Soviet/Russian ROMs in the future.

Where did you find Estonia's numbers though? I have about four sites that I found decent for reference and the best I could do was adapt eliteprospects' stats from 1993.

Let me know what your sites are, I muddled through Russian in college so that opens up a whole other side (and sites) of hockey that is more interested in the international game.

Rosters, for the most part, have been taken from each year's World Championships. Some provisions were made in cases where say, some teams only had one goalie, so I borrowed a backup from that year's Olympic roster, or had to improvise some data because apparently no one found it important enough to record what sweater numbers the Estonian National team wore 26 years ago... what the hell eh?

Not much help on the South Korean player photos...

  10. If it can be done it's well beyond my capabilities. The center ice tiles are all together in the rom, in order to expand them you would have to insert those additional tiles in sequence.

I did notice that you can use the center ice tiles elsewhere on the rink surface, there is nothing that requires them to be at that particular 6x4 location. Makes for some interesting possibilities...

  11. I did an edit of the rink graphics to dumb-down some of the detail in the crowd that you probably don't notice much at full speed. Ended up with max of 37 usable tiles. Using the full center ice for a logo can take up to 20 of those and you still need to edit the tiles that make up the actual circle to match the ice color of the logo. The other faceoff circles are bigger and would eat up the other 17 quickly.

(I actually had to do something similar when I was figuring out my IIHF version of NHL96. For some reason the game menu font doesn't have a "Z". But they did have an "X" weirdly enough, so I just changed the sprite and made sure to spell CXech Republic and KaXakhstan in NOSE.)

That was my plan, sadly I think I only came up with 1 free letter. Import players ruined it... I could do it with the team banners but wanted to keep things consistent. BUT, now that you mention it I didn't take caps into consideration so I might have to take another look.

Hmm I think I know where you are going with that. I was actually hoping to adapt some sprites to make something for the four zone face off circles, but the best I could do was to free up four rink tiles. I did make a Skoda logo for the center ice dot using the shared All-Star team logo in '92, but if I could figure out how to have some garish advert in all five circles, that would be amazing.

I edited the rink to free up a couple extras, there's just not enough tiles to do anything with the other four even if you used the same logo for all four.

Curious, how'd you work the on-ice ad?

although, if I may... could use more umlauts.

I would love to add more umlauts but couldn't figure out a way to alter the fonts enough to pull it off - if you have any ideas I'm all ears. The way that I was calculating letter usage I could have done a couple letters but not all, IMO would have looked worse... Ultimately decided it would look more consistent without.

Center ice is kind of a convoluted process, it's a combination of editing the team-specific tiles and the actual rink tiles. If you're really interested shoot me a DM and I'll do my best to walk through it. Wanted to try it out since on-ice ads are so much more obvious in the European leagues.

  14. "What I'm really liking this year is the focus on growing the game."

    Yes, yes and yes.

It's very cool that everyone's efforts are towards that goal. I haven't gotten into online play - I struggle to beat a 9-year old and an 11-year old and I had a twenty year head start on them with this game - but the online play is what is driving most of the activity. I just want to see anyone who wants their favorite league NHL'94 style to have that opportunity!

Never really interacted with @chaos or @danTML7 since I'm on the offline game side. I had to vote for @smozoma because he answered some REALLY stupid questions from me when I started trying to figure out how to do this and his patience left just enough bread crumbs to keep following the trail when it would have been really easy to give up.

Great work. I feel I missed the reference on not Ron Barr, but it's funny nonetheless.

although... since it's pond hockey, might I offer this?
I may have been inspired to edit this into the NHA 1910 ROM from... I want to say Coach Mac made it?

That is awesome! Could you send that to me too?
