  1. Hello all!

Just wanted to share an update (one I am very excited about) on this project.

drumroll... I have figured out how to really take advantage of Smozoma's midi2nhl94 converter and have begun work sweeping through my mental rolodex of stadium songs and pep band classics to create a more modern (yet still classy 16-bit) music experience.

Take a listen to my rendition of You Should Be Dancing by The Beegees (better known as the "Gino Time" song here in Boston though!), along with the Bill Walsh College Football Theme, The Hockey Song by Stompin' Tom Connors, and Sirius by The Alan Parsons Project snuck in elsewhere.

You can also grab a preview of the new audience, ice layout, and menu designs in action there.

There is no ETA for this because I am not stupid enough to put one again knowing I'll miss it!

All this to say, the NHL has made things excessively complicated to make it look like a bigger entity than it actually is.

What do you mean? The NHL is a major four sport if you don’t count European soccer, MMA, golf, NASCAR, college football, college basketball, or any of the others more popular than it. /s

  3. @von Ozbourme the ticket prices if you live in a city with a team doing well… yikes. Boston was already crazy expensive relative to the rest of the country, now it’s *$200 US* to get into a game (resale with face value not far away). Not sit near the glass - sit in the last row with your feet folded in half because they needed to fit more seats in.

I‘m a student, but don’t go to any of the D1 schools in the area so NCAA tickets are still $25+ depending on the game (most schools will raise price by $15 for their main rivalry game as a means to cash in a little since these teams are barely profitable), but 8 NCAA games VS 1 NHL game isn’t a hard equation to solve if you have $200 burning a hole in your pocket.

  4. I, like V.O./Betts have sort of moved to other hockey products with the NHL being a bit iffy of a broadcast product lately. I still watch a lot, but don’t pay for anything aside from my “streaming service (wink wink)”.

Down here the lower levels are a bit more pure with no gambling or animated board ads - not sure how it is for CHL in Canada though.

For the talking heads being annoying - I think lots of places have seen what happened with NBA on TNT and want that same dynamic, but just can’t really catch it since that’s a very special group that has been doing that forever. Can’t just put Keith Yandle or Biz on and expect magic.

  5. So the last issue I can notice is that in 94, the bench animations and fans that get up and move around are out of place. Still amazing work, and if anyone was super eager these could be turned off by coloring transparency over the sprites.

I am guessing that these are treated differently than the fan arms because they’re multiple tiles moving in conjunction as opposed to new drawings that go over the same tile.

Can't really screen shot this, but another heads up, I noticed, for 98 at least, that players tend to disappear when they get too close to the edge of the screen. My guess is that while the background is displaying at the wider resolution, the area in which the player sprites load and unload remain the same as the default version. Haven't decided if that is too jarring yet, but I think I'm going to use it anyway...

I also noticed this in 94.

I can't say enough about how much I love that you just keep plowing ahead with new ideas and variations. Last time I played there were two clone coaches… now I see you have three distinctively different coaches behind the bench! Every time I see this ROM, there is some new detail to delight in.

Oh you Canadians are too kind :)

I just have way more free time than everyone else and waited until all of you did the hard parts so I could build off your ideas LOL.

To quote those repetitive commercials, we’re in a “new golden era” right now with all of the amazing hacks!

  8. When I first found this site back when I was 10 or so, I really really really liked the Roamin’ Goalies hack, and I’ve always liked the Canucks.

I spent a few hours on playoff runs just taking off with Kirk McLean and running into the opposing goalie at full speed. So I’d have to say Kirk McLean is the one I have my favorite memories playing as.

    BUT

My general favorite player who is also in NHL ‘94 is probably Teemu Selanne.

  9. I like Carolina in both.

But if every other team is as accurate as possible, I would lean black.

Just spitballing though - this is an anniversary year for Carolina, so maybe could use the 25th anniversary logo at center since it has barely any white? But then again, the red jersey is for the 25th anniversary… decisions decisions.

  10. Hey all,

Just wanted to share an update on the scope of this project (mostly for my own gain/to track progress).

    image.pngimage.png

First, I have decided to revamp the branding to get away from the ESPN+ imagery. There was some serious East Coast bias in that decision given only 2 conferences are on the service.

    image.pngimage.png

Second, I am changing the pre-game experience to be a bit more true to college hockey and cohesive with the NCAA branding. Colby Cohen takes over as the color commentator given he's the only Frozen Four broadcaster who played D-I, and team rankings appear. Drezz's background hacks appear on both pre-game screens. This is a screenshot of the rough draft of this stage of the game, and I am very excited with how the final looks.

    image.pngimage.png

Third, the rink and arena tile layout has been updated to feature a more realistic atmosphere. Ice logos are as authentic as possible, and fan colors are now "dynamic" based on the home team's color palette. The signs are also going to be on the bottom of the glass as to match actual NCAA rinks.

I hope to publish the podded update where you can see all of the changes in action within the next few weeks, these large scale changes take a lot of time but they are necessary to create a ROM worthy of the amazing league that is D1 NCAA Hockey.
