  1. That'd be awesome, but difficult to do. We don't know how to create new sounds (although I wonder if that knowledge is out there for other games that maybe work the same way?).

do we know what file type the sounds are? If it's a common file type, most audio editing programs could do it. I could record his "scoregasm" off the television, save it as that file type, and then the question is just getting it into the code.

Sounds like it's not a very popular idea, though!! :(

  2. Thanks so much for doing this. I realize it's a lot of work.

I'm a Ranger fan who watches most games and frequents blueshirtbanter, so I just have to say this: Girardi and Staal are way overrated. ....both should be 3 speed and 3 agility, and Girardi's checking is a 4 at best. The current ratings would be accurate 3, maybe 2 years ago, not anymore. Dylan McIlrath has outplayed both of them this year (and should never be scratched for either of them but AV also plays Tanner Glass every game  ). When I see how high Girardi was drafted in the Velocity league based on these ratings, it cracks me up because in real life, he totally sucks at this point in his career. But I can fix these numbers easily with NOSE.

Either way, great job and thanks.

  3. I used to play with offsides but realized it really doesn't add anything to the game and just creates tons of whistles as guys off the screen stupidly hang just over the line. Computer controlled players already play as if offsides is on, so goal hanging isn't an issue. The only issue is if you take the puck out of the zone and then go right back in, but aren't the zones too small anyway? I always play with auto line changes so you have to use your whole team. With line changes on, you basically can get away with using only 2 lines. With auto, you checking line will always be in during the 3rd period if you have a lead.

  4. Hmmm, I'll consider that. I wouldn't want big guys to be useless. Thanks for the tip.

I don't know, maybe some guys like the way the game plays that way and wanted some of that "small guy" dominance back. I personally think that having clear paths to the net constantly is just as unrealistic..and requires less creativity in scoring..then having Shea Weber catch Tyler Seguin from behind. The only reason he got beat in the first place is that he took a terrible angle to the puck because the computer is dumb.

Those same guys probably also love Pavel Bure and the weight bug, where as I think it's the absolute worst thing about the original NHL94 that the saviors on this site thankfully destroyed. Removing it only partially levels the playing field, maneuverability is still very important.

  5. This is brilliant work...time to get the boys together for a "94-16" night..wings, beer, and my laptop, an HDMI cable to the TV, with an adaptor for PS2 controllers. 20 years later this game still rules, and these updates will make it playable forever. I wouldn't change anything except maybe go with the 15 scale ratings, but that's not a big deal as you still have many usable players on each team.. I'd gladly send you a few bucks for a trade deadline update.

Now I just need to get my kids playing!

  6. Looks cool, nice work. I have to say, the speed burst reductions are a fun killer. It basically turns the game back more towards the original weight bug nonsense where big guys are pretty much useless. Your defensemen are going to get toasted and every pass up the ice turns into a breakaway. I wouldn't mind the reduced speed burst if you could still check and slow defensemen didn't play such stupid angles. I'm ok with a reduction to 19 or maybe 18 (the original is 20 multiplier I believe in that hex) along with a ratings scale of 15 where there is less drastic difference in speed ratings, but anything below that and the fun level starts to drop.

  7. Hey, just wanted to say thanks for creating this. I miss clockwise's updates, but this lessens the hurt. It's great to see someone is still doing this.

I did find that overall the ratings are too heavy in favor of shot power. I did a roster dump to excel, find and replace, and bumped everyone down by 1 pt, except Weber and Chara, and I bumped their accuracy down 1 each to offset. I find the game plays better now, not as easy to just stop between the dots and blow slapshots by the goalies. I also made some changes to my favorite team the Rangers, namely boosting Krieders speed (he's a 4 in this version, changed to a 6 he's one of the fastest guys in the league) and knocked Stepan down as he isn't nearly that good.

Also, I don't like the greatly reduced speed burst...I believe the original value is 7020 on that hex, this rom has it at 7017..I make it 7019. At 7017 big slow guys again become huge liabilities bordering on weight bug levels...it's much harder to check anyone and almost impossible to stop breakaways from happening with bigger defensemen. 7019 is a good compromise.

Anyway Skip thanks again. Anyone interested in my mods I will post the rom.

  8. how about if I offer to pay for help? please have a look at the ratings for players on your favorite team and hit me with some comments!

    PLEASE.

I really want to have the playoffs update be less offensive by getting the ratings polished up. I'm working on shot power and speed, mostly, and checking and passing skills a bit, too. you can help; please do.

I'm really into player ratings and I know some teams pretty well (NYR, NJD), but I don't agree with your methodology completely. I think a goal scorer should score goals, a set up man should be able to pass the puck, and a defensive player should be able to check people or at least be able to maneuver to check people. +/- is more a representation of a bad defensive system or poor motivation/coaching than individual players performance...so what you do in a case like that is lower the overall rating of the team as opposed to trying to emulate +/- rating. For instance if you put Marian Gaborik on a bad team, maybe you bump his shot power down a notch..maybe that teams all star defenseman doesn't fare as well in the ratings as the guy on the first place team.

  9. I would love it if y'all would be willing to look over my ROM for stuff like Hagelin being a 100 (I had him at 85 and some things like shot power and rookie speed are surely off). and, yeah, speed for heavy guys often needs to be bumped up or they don't move.

The fact that he's a rookie and isn't completely dominating the league, you probably should leave it at 85 to reflect his true impact on the ice. He's as fast or faster skater than Gaborik in reality...but Gaborik is Gaborik and Hagelin is a rookie with 12 goals in 50 games.

Just looking at your Rangers ratings, there are some things that seem a bit strange. You have Hagelin and Gaboriks defensive awareness ratings higher than Ryan Callahans. Mike Rupp With 100 shot accuracy? John Scott with 100 shot power? He's scored 1 goal in 3 years. :)

  10. That would be kind of the opposite of what this guy says: http://forum.nhl94.com/index.php?/topic/13954-cpu-not-hard-enough-try-this/

    Nobody knows for sure though.

He seemed to say that it was pronounced in NHL97, but no so much in 94.

I'm going to do a bit more testing, but it's leading me to believe that when it comes to a user controlled team, offensive awareness may be the least important attribute.

  11. I just took a Rom in SNES, made all the players on the ice off awr=0, all of the def awr 100. Anaheim's top 5 players. Played a game with both sides being ANH.

you'd think nobody'd be going to the net. Not the case. It seems like players behave identically in the offensive zone regardless of this setting.

Then I did the reverse with defensive awareness. Here it seemed like players tended to skate around in corners in the defensive zone instead of staying in front of the net due to the low setting.

Anyone have a different take on this? It seems like the OFF awareness rating is almost irrelevant.

  12. sneslabel.png

quite a lot has changed since I last shared a file of this thing, but I am still seeking help and corrections and comments. if something seems wrong, please report it to me. if you know a team well and have a look through the player ratings, I will gladly accept and use comments on individual agility, speed, shot power, checking, pass/shoot bias, endurance and passing ratings, but not on overall, awarenesses, shooting accuracy nor reputation ratings. please let me know if I made any errors in spelling, jersey numbers, uniform patterning, player lines, team rosters or the likes. if you want to see your player more clearly, you can activate the multitap option and use the shadow colors from the other end of the visible spectrum. I'm sure there will be more updates, as there are bound to be typos and I don't feel like it is ever really finished. certainly expect a playoffs and final-game line combos update.

  13. THIS IS FOR THE SUPER NINTENDO

Trade deadline rom: NHL 12 Complete.rar

In this update I've redone all team jersey colours (Credit to trudatman)

Changed defense control to be default ON

Added water bottles to top of net (With some help from trudatman)

Re-did team banners (Credit to trudatman)

Replaced Ron Barr with Don Cherry (He's a controversial Canadian icon who's sort of gone senile in his years)

    Changed arena names

    Changed overall ratings

Edited some text for personal preference (Changed aggression to discipline, changed Regular season to exhibition, and some other non necessary stuff)

Edited playoff seedings to reflect that of last years (Will update once playoffs come along this year)

Replaced old teams with current teams, replaced All Star teams with Nashville, and Phoenix

Edited starting menu slightly to reflect stanley cup participants as default teams

Updated rosters on all 28 teams to accurately reflect their overall performance over the last 2 years

    Updated lines

Updated team advantages to accurately reflect how each team is performing up to date using a formula to divide the amount of teams by the amount of points per specific advantage, and allocated evenly.

Changed Regular Season overtimes from 5 minutes to 20 minutes (Ties suck)

Changed 20 minute periods to "Highlight mode" which is essentially a 1 second period... If used in playoffs, you can watch computer players "highlights" occasionally. Kind of a silly thing, but me and my buddies like playing drinking games for them. YOU COULD TOO!

I spent approximately 30-40 hours on this (been on short term disability from work), doing all my balancing by completing a team, opening the rom, checking players ratings, and adjusting accordingly to each specific players performance, as well as my own opinion.

I used this website: http://www.forecaste...playerindex.cgi to see player specific "Assets" and "Flaws", as well as up to date stats... and this website http://www.capgeek.c....php?team_id=22 for current rosters

Each player should be fairly accurate to how they are in real life based on that website, and my own opinion... I didn't just randomly choose their ratings for them. The website was comprehensive enough to get a good feel for how they actually play even if I wasn't too familiary with the player.

If there's any ratings that you feel are unfair based on in game comparisons to other players, let me know... I feel I had the hardest time with defense ratings.

Some players might be rated lower because it's hard to be rated high as a defensive first player as there's only a few attributes in the game that are geared towards defense...

If there's any requests for the rom, I'm willing to consider and adjust...

    ENJOY!!!

*Note. Some of the teams I first assembled might be a bit whacky as I made those teams in August... So if you see something off, please let me know. Thx.

I'll be replacing Dallas with Minnesota, and Phoenix with Columbus in another rom.

    Made a few edits

Fantastic rom. I realize how much I prefer the SNES version once it has updated rosters...just more fun than the Sega. It's really difficult to get up the ice since the checking is so dominant and switching off to your defensemen make it easy to line people up. Much more emphasis on moving the puck.

A few things on ratings...I know it's a lot of players to go though, so I'm not complaining, just pointing things out.

I'm a Ranger fan..the rom has Karl Hagelin as a 55 in speed and agility. He's one of the fastest skaters in the league. Also, the speed and agility ratings seem backwards for defensemen Del Zotto and McDonagh...Mcdonagh is a good skater but not as good as Del Zotto. I fixed these things in about 10 seconds with the editor for my own use. Not sure if anyone else has any ratings they think are off.

As for your dilemma with defensive ratings, I think you need to reflect a good defenseman by bumping up speed and agility numbers. That's kind of happened already, as for instance with Chara whose numbers in those areas are higher than they really should be on face value. Since there's no way to reflect poke checking and positioning, you adjust your speed, agility and possibly weight up.

Thanks again for the hard work and the cool rom.

  14. Fantastic work here guys. Can't thank you enough for keeping this game alive with this stuff. I've got my buddy addicted to playing again after we slipped a few games in at half-time during football. Everything from the intro graphics to the uniforms, the game play it's all excellent.

One question: it seems like the speed burst has been reduced. I know that there was some talk of this hack previously, not sure if it's been applied or not. We play without fatigue, and you used to be able to catch up with most breakaways...now it seems like a guy 2 speed points slower than another just can't catch up. I realize people think this may be unrealistic, but the angles that defenseman take are so stupid that I thought it was a necessary evil. Also, using a slow guy with big hitting numbers that made some sense in previous weight bug fixed versions is now less of a consideration since they are so hindered by the speed issue.

Anyway, I guess I can do some work and reverse the hack.

  15. Nice to hear. Thanks for the comments. Our goal was to make NHL94 as realistic as possible. (as you could with old arcade hockey...)

It just seems that almost all of North American NHL94-players like to play the game with original rom and without offsides and line changes. Way that the game is ultimate arcade, where you just can crash and bang all the time (speed bursts all night long).

I play auto line changes when I play with friends. You have to use more of your roster. In all fairness, the speed burst is needed on defense to make up for the horrific angles your computer controlled defensemen take...it somewhat counteracts the exaggerated importance of speed in the game relative to real hockey (exacerbated to another degree by the weight bug of the original rom which makes pee wees become supermen). If you play with fatigue on, your slow guys become even more useless because they are out of energy making one defensive play back checking.

I've stopped playing with offsides since I started playing on line even though I prefer it..since no one else plays it and you have to play differently with it off. It does slow the game down a lot with all the whistles, but it's one more element of strategy you have to take into account.

Back to NHL94/2010: minor whining: , there are a few ratings here or there that I'd bump up or down (Thornton isn't THATgood!!), but for the most part they are pretty tight. I do think you juiced the goalies a TAD too much..maybe one notch down on the pad saves. Using Luongo or Brodeur you almost don't need to do manual goalie!

One thing I particularly don't like are the 4 minute injury penalties..in fact, all penalties should be knocked down to a minute or so (if that's possible) to account for the short periods..I"m not asking you to do it for me, I'll take a shot at editing the rom myself...if you happen to know if that isn't possible, let me know so I don't waste my time.

But again, overall, great job and thanks again.

  16. The fact that more people aren't into playing this version of the game on line is puzzling to me. It's really been well done. The player ratings are much more centered..ie more guys in the middle, less complete duds and not as many off the charts super elite players. It makes the games much tighter, especially since the average defenseman is rated higher than in the original rom. That and the the weight bug fix, plus having the current players make for a real winner. I played a 7 game series with a friend the other night, and he's basically hooked on the game again also.

  17. Dervin10 made this a couple years ago. really useful.

You can create a CSV file (which can be opened with excel) of the players in a ROM. then you can change the skills of the players and import the players from the CSV back into the ROM.

    A couple usage notes:

1: do not change the order of the players

2: do not change the player names, positions, or teams.

You can only change the skills/attributes.

    Installation

1: Download and unzip to wherever you want: NHL_Hockey_Roster_Tool.zip

2: Also, this requires the .NET framework. I think version 2.0 will work, but if not, try version 1.1

(if you need to install the framework, can you please tell me which one works so i can update this to be more accurate? thanks)

Worked like a charm on the first pass, I didn't need to install framework. Thanks again.

  18. I guess I wont get it then...

    however:

chapter 6: CyberSports ratings (the author of the book rerates all players in a later chapter with this formula) pages 123-130

we can make a rom with this if someone uploads it.

I'm thinking that you guys who play the game religiously know as much or more about what attributes are important in the game. Use Smoz's spreadsheets and make your own formulas..it's easy. I spent half a day doing it it was so damn fun.

  19. I never look a gift horse in the mouth. Even if the rosters aren't 100%, they're pretty close..it basically makes it like this game game out this year, but improved with the weight bug fix. I'm moving my computer into the living room so we can have an NHL94/2010 night like the old days...hooked up to the 40 inch LCD. It's nuts, and Swos and Mahavishnu rock.

You could edit the game yourself if you want. I edited the 2006 rom a few years back where I reversed all the weights. It wasn't difficult..slow going but not hard. I'm sure it's not that difficult to fix the rosters yourself.
