  1. Eklund is a good call. He's super speedy and agile. When I play with Philly, I usually go with Recchi/Eklund/Dineen. Sometimes I'll stick with Brindamour instead of Dineen, but I like Dineen's speed, especially combined with Eklund. Lindros just sucks in nhl '94, I always sub him off. Talk about overrated players!

Huh, I usually find that Lindros is the best finisher when it comes to one-timers for me. Weird.

smozoma, I definitely agree with using Recchi's slapshot. Many times I've actually had him cut across in between the blueline and the hashmarks on the right side, stop, then blast a rocket shot top shelf, far side. The weird thing is that sometimes the shot animation has no shot sound effect. The weirder thing is that every time there isn't a slapshot sfx, it's a goal, every, single, time.

  2. Yeah, I just take out Lindros:

    C: Recchi

RW/LW: Dineen or Eklund depending on handedness preference

Killer. I don't know what it is about these guys, but they really shift the shots-per-game balance in your favour.

Not to mess with your winning formula here, but since Recchi is a right winger and Eklund is a center, shouldn't they switch positions? I find that Recchi's shot is more powerful and faster than Eklund, while Pelle has the footspeed and passing for a center.

  3. Wow, I'm jealous! I wish the 94 site had the tutorials and videos that the 93 site has. Nice job!

The Shawn Chambers rating must've gotten someone angry, because it was changed to 40-something in 94.

That has got to be the best screenshot you've got on the site. Classic.

EDIT: Holy sweetness! You got an mp3 of the organ song! Totally awesome!

  4. For some reason, I've always found success with Pelle Eklund for the Flyers (Genesis). I once had this stretch of games where Lindros was on a cold streak, and for the heck of it, I substituted Eklund for him. Every single game he got a goal and an assist. Every time I'm on the PK, I get great scoring chances from him, and usually finish them. I don't know, maybe it's just me.

Then again, I can't seem to find any success when using Roenick...

  5. On a typical day, which rules would you use the most? I'll start off by saying I normally play 5 minutes, penalties on (except offsides), line changes off. I played that way as a kid with NHL 97 after school and now I do it with NHL 94 (only I haven't gotten a chance to do it after school). 5 minutes gives me a short game around 8-10 minutes so I can enjoy it before getting to my homework. Offsides slows the game down, but at the same time I want to keep it clean and get chances at penalty shots. Line changes off because I never used them and I like having my best players out there for the whole game.

By the way, in case you never noticed, a 5 minute period is 2 minutes in real time, a 10 minute period is 4 minutes real time, and a 20 minute period is 8 minutes real time. I got bored one day and decided to use a stopwatch to time it.

  6. I suppose the NHL could really only give you an answer to your question. They are in fact going back to whites at home next year, which is good. I still don't understand why they went to teams wearing dark at home, after years of the home team wearing white. A change really wasn't needed and the NHL, like usual, seemed to make a change just for the sake of change. I never (still don't) got used to seeing the home teams wearing dark and am glad the NHL realized this mistake. They also made a good decision (gasp) on getting rid of all alternate sweaters, so just 2 sweaters per team now. None of that third-jersey garbage for the time being.

The reason the NHL switched to darks at home was because most of teh alternates are dark, meaning if a team goes on a road trip and one of the teams wears alternates, they would have to then carry two pairs of jerseys, socks, helmets, etc. just because one team would wear their dark jerseys at home. That meant twice the baggage they had to carry, and in the post 9/11 airport, that's just not convenient. So to cut down on the amount of baggage needed, the league made the darks the home uniforms. Besides, it gave teams a chance to sell their dark uniforms at their arenas as a new source of revenue (since teams only carried the white ones), not mention it gives home crowds a chance to see some iconic uniforms, such as the Red Wings red unis, the Habs red and blue, and the Hawks red jerseys.

  7. Hey Drezz, great work! Just as an FYI, teams will once again return to wearing white at home and dark on the road, for the 2007-2008 NHL Season.

I could've sworn the league was keeping it dark at home. What's the point of switching it to white at home only to switch it back to dark at home once the alternates are back?

  8. I finally understand the problem about the "flaw" or the "cheap goal."

the only people who complain about this are the Genesissies. I forgot, for a while, about the problem with the Genesis version: the twenty-second delay before the goalie is activated. you have to press and hold a button combo (I really don't care which ones; f u c k Genesis) and wait for the goalie to become the active player. this allows the other player time enough to skate down to your end of the ice, go against the boards, cut across the goal and score. you finally have the goalie activated in time to watch the puck bulge the twine. lame.

SNES is the answer here, folks; nothing is cheap, everything can be saved.

good luck with your Genesis. hehe.

Wow, who spiked your fruit loops this morning?

If you want to argue over which system is best, how about presenting a well thought out and organized list of pros and cons compared to the Genesis instead of attacking everyone who plays the Genesis version, mkay?

  9. The songs have changed because the order and amount of teams have changed and expanded. I am not sure how to correct this.

Anybody know how to give a certain team a certain song?

I didn't realize about the hot / cold list. I was trying to distinguish between the two NY teams. Any ideas?

Briere won't have to change teams in my hacks for 8 years! Hurray. (if he lasts the whole 8 years there)

Hmm, that's interesting to say the least. The game assigns the songs to a specific order of teams and changing the order changes the music as well. I doubt it's possible to give certain songs to certain teams, but I can live with it. :)

My suggestion for the New York teams would be to take the route the original NHL 94 game did, and that's leave them as "New York" and let the colors of their banners tell the difference. I hardly think anyone agonized over the fact that the "Other Scores" menu doesn't say which one it is. Besides, if you're playing in playoff mode, it'll show the banner in the tree.

  10. Hey Mack, something I've noticed (and it's something I've also noticed with clockwise's NHL 91) with the Flyers opening organ song. The one they originally have in NHL 94 is the correct one, but the one they have in your rom is better suited for a team like Minnesota. (clockwise actually has it with the Buffalo and Winnipeg song in his 91 edit). Is there a way for you to change it back to the original? I'd really appreciate it.

And one more thing: You have the New York teams listed as "New York R." and "New York I.", but their names are thus represented as "New York R. Rangers" and "New York I. Islanders" in the hot/cold listings with Ron McLean. Just wanted to point that out if you didn't notice.

I'm eagerly awaiting your next edit (especially with Briere over here in Philly!). I know it'll be just as good as the previous ones.

  11. Yet another topic on reversed goaltenders (I posted on in the NHL 97 board if you didn't check yet). The Eastern All-Star team (Wales Conference) has its goalies reversed. Patrick Roy (left-handed) is right-handed on the All-Star team, while Grant Fuhr and Tom Barrasso (both right-handed) are lefties. What's up with that?

  12. Foresberg was injured for almost his whole time here he's, it's not why last season was a debacle but Flyers brass wasn't expected to sign him (I think).

Besides we picked up Timmonen, Hartnell and the 2nd pick for a player who many very well have played his last game in the NHL. Awesome move by Homer.

On topic I allways watch the hot/cold matchups esp if I'm away at MSG :dal_skater_hand_grab:

Actually, I meant why they traded him after drafting him.

I only watch the hot/cold matchups to see how much a player's overall flucuates and how they stack up against their counterpart. It's surprising, actually.

  13. I know what you're talking about. Hextall doesn't ever become amazing, but strangely, he plays better with a cold streak than hot streak, or so it seems.

Damn it, that reminds me, why the hell did the Flyers trade away Hexy? In fact, why did they ever trade away Forsberg in the first place?!

The only thing that could make NHL 94 even better than it is now for me is if the Flyers had Hextall for the 93 season. :)
