  1. To be clear, the "keepers" we carry over are permanent, right?  (So this coming season, say I finish middle of the pack and get to keep one guy for the season after, I will have 88, 66 plus the new guy I kept, right? All 3 as keepers? It is not like I would get only the one guy total to keep, which would actually be a step backwards, and seeming to me to defeat the purpose of creating parity... right?)

  2. On October 19 I added three new cities:

    1. Green Bay
    2. Minneapolis
    3. Vancouver

I did not add any votes, so if you like, go back and add your vote. (I think that is possible, if not, let me know.)  This thing is pretty unscientific, but at least it shows where the "interest" is...

  3. Now hold on a sec, haven't we seen this before?  Someone posted a a thread with either the same or a very similar looking DIY project?  Had lots of photos and an explanation behind it?  Someone here even said "how much do you want for it" and they said they weren't selling?  Can't remember where that thread is...

Regarding price, I think it is worth the $$$.  If a craftsman puts their heart and soul into making a masterpiece, they deserve generous compensation. :)

Yes I agree if we only got like 12 coaches call it like Mini GDL, but regardless I'd like to keep the format, and rules to a traditional GDL.

Pretty sure "GDL" is trademarked, and any use of that term, or derivative of "GDL", is illegal.  Will have to be called something completely different to avoid prosecution.

  5. Update:
I think this switch on the bottom might be the key... someone with a F310 use this link to try it out:

    http://support.logitech.com/en_in/article/21696?product=a0qi00000069ueWAAQ

Below is a paste of the site, in case it goes missing sometime in the future....

USING THE INPUT MODE SWITCH ON THE GAMEPAD F310 TO SELECT DIRECTINPUT OR XINPUT
    Updated:  08/31/2014 08:00 PM
The Wireless Gamepad F310 supports two different input modes:

    1. XInput (X)
    2. DirectInput (D)

These modes are selected using the switch located on the bottom of the F310, as shown below.

    f310-trdfront.jpg

    XInput (X)

XInput is the preinstalled, modern gamepad standard on Windows 7 and Vista. It can also be installed on Windows XP (SP1 or greater).

Use XInput to play games in Windows whenever possible. This input mode is intended to make the gamepad work natively with modern games.

If you're playing a new game with the F310 gamepad, we suggest you set the Input Mode switch to "X". If you want to customize the input functionality, try using DirectInput mode instead.

    DirectInput (D)

DirectInput mode works with Windows drivers to enable basic input functionality. This input mode also lets you use the Logitech Gaming Software to customize the inputs for games that don't normally allow you to do so, or don't have gamepad support at all.

You can use the Logitech Gaming Software with DirectInput mode to assign a specific key or key combination to any of the buttons or thumbsticks on the gamepad. You can also assign each thumbstick to work like a joystick or mouse.

NOTE: Logitech doesn't provide configuration software for non-Windows systems, but many games allow you to configure inputs in-game. DirectInput mode lets the gamepad communicate with the drivers on many such systems.

We've been there the last two years and have a great relationship with the Expo organizers (they are fantastic).  This will definitely be bigger than Hartford as far as '94 turnout.  First year we had 26 or so...this year we had over 40 sign-ups (36 ended up playing) and I am hoping we can get to 64 for 2018!

    It is GENs only, right?

  7. Ok, thanks for the headsup.  I am going to try to make this one, and the long notice helps!

Also, I have moved to the original Gens controller for online play, so I am not hitting the wrong buttons when I play live!  (In Vegas, my first time using an original controller -- besides 20+ years ago -- was the day of the tourney.  Huge mistake.)

Is this Retro Expo going to be just as big as the Hartford one?  You did this one last year, didn't you, or was that a different one? (Or my imagination.)

I added this thead to www.nhl94.com/events for easy sharing...

  8. Just wanted to update this for people that are having this issue.  I did fix my issue, and had my controller working fine.  But I switched controllers because I didn't like the feel... Now I don't remember what the heck I did!

Anyway, there is a solution.  And it is somewhere on the forum.  If you find it, please put a link to it in this thread to help others.  :) (I will search myself as time allows...)

  9. Welcome!  There is a ton of info here, that is for sure.  (Some might be hard to find, but it is here somewhere.)  I recommend using the Guide For New Members link 1 post above yours. I wrote it for new guys specifically.  And it is completely current (hot off the presses, so to speak)...

Community is very deep.  We have both online leagues, plus live events.  You and your buddies should jump in! (Or, just you read up on all the tricks of the trade here, and start smashing your buddies out of nowhere! :P)

If you are interested, the Fall Classic online league is now accepting new participants...

Thats cool, first time ive seen the round robin breakdown from Vegas.  And yea, unfortunately was in Minneapolis this past weekend (you know you can get from the airport to downtown on public transportation for $2, amazing).

You can get to the Airport on normal public transit her en Toronto, too.  It is $3, the usual fare, but requires a subway and a bus ride. (It is pretty far away.)

Conversely, in Vegas the last night I was there, I wanted to take a bus back to my hotel, which was a straight line down Las Vegas Blvd.  When I tried to board the bus -- to take a 10 minute ride straight down the street -- I was told it was $6 minimum, which covered me for 2 hours, which was overkill.  In short, it was about the same price as an Uber, but with crap seats and full of drunks.  I took and Uber.

  11. The guy who won was in Vegas with a buddy who came in 4th, Kevin, I think.  I think he goes by KB27 here, as he has since joined the forum.

    Was he there?

Dayum, was expecting Tex to at least be in the final.

The Twitch feed was great.  Hearing the brothers talking was awesome, and then the play-by-play by was great, too!  These two were highly skilled.  As Raph mentioned, the stops and starts, the manual goalie on and off to reset.  Not your average dudes playing in their basement.  Hope they join up here, if they haven't already.

  12. Lol yeah I am feeling manic lately.  Got back from Vegas and got afraid this whole thing could wither away, and thought I have to quit relying on others.  It is time for ME to step up.  And hopefully a few others. (Not the same old guys, some new peeps.)

But thanks for your kind words. :)

And plenty do their part, like yourself with your ROMs.  10% or so really contribute, in some way.  I want to be part of the 10%.

  13. Video Tutorials

If a picture is worth 1000 words a video is worth a million.

The #1 most needed video is: "How To Play Online"

I feel that the content http://www.nhl94online.com/html/getting-started.php should be made into a forum post.   Furthermore, a 2 minute video should be made showing somebody quickly doing a walkthough of this.  I can make a raw video, if someone can edit it, and add text overlays?

  14. Newsletter

Jer_33 suggested we have a newsletter, and I think it is a great idea.  He is even willing to spearhead it.

I am not sure if we should use a 3rd party "Newsletter" website, or if we should use forum software (is it a forum option, to email members), or make our own solution (not a lot of work in PHP, but why reinvent the wheel?)...

What I do think is that there should be a Newsletter that:

    • Gets sent out monthly, or possibly quarterly, or maybe only when warranted?
    • Copies of the Newsletters should also exist in HTML format, or just message format,  on the forum (there is now a "Latest Info" section, a perfect place for Newsletters)
    • They should be short, but highlight important NHL'94 info, especially Live tournaments. More focus should be given to offline stuff, or content not in our forum, since a people that partake in the forum probably know a ton already...

    NHL94online.com Overhaul

Nhl94online needs to be reorganized and pruned.  It is an amazing site, -- REALLY amazing! -- but its mandate should be: scheduling, uploading and stat keeping.

Everything else should be done on the forum.  (I think there should be only 4 Nav bar items on NHL94online: Standings, Playoffs, Stats, User Tools.)

Specifically, league registration, and info on getting up and running with hamachi and kailera and the latest zip of the emulator pkg, and confirming coaches can be moved to the forum. The forum is more visible, more readable, and easier to maintain.  Changing info on nhl94online requires FTP. Changing info on forum is "edit" message. And there are tons of Mods that can edit messages, but not so many with FTP access...

I really think it is critical to have ONLY the most accurate information out there.  New recruits need all the help they can get, and no dead ends.  So put information that needs updating in one place: the forum.

Keep Running Live Tournaments (With 2 Tweaks)

I really respect the awesome effort made by guys that run the tournaments.  It is a surprise to me how successful they are, and how they seem to be mostly made up of non-forum members (NFPs)!  Well these NFPs are ripe for the picking!

    Tweak 1
Edit: This Idea is happening.  See Business Cards For Tournaments.
At a minimum I recommend we have 1000 business cards printed out with only a few words on them:

    Come play online at:
    NHL94.com/joinus

We could all have a handful of cards in our wallets all the time, but the guys running the tournaments could have a stack of them to hand out to the people participating.  A flyer is a great idea, too.  But having these ready-made cards would be a nice backup plan (for when time runs out and a flyer doesn't get made, lol).

    Tweak 2
Trojan (King of 94' WI) suggested that we have a single Twitch account, shared by all tournaments, to stream the games.  This will make finding the feed much easier, as well as let us have one great name (is "nhl94" taken?) for all of our stuff.

  16. NHL94.com/forum Overhaul  <--this is the key to it all

This is where I think all articles and content should reside.  The main site NHL94.com, should just point to articles on the forum.  The game upload site, NHL94online.com, should just point to articles and threads on the forum.

The forum needs major reworking, including:

    • developing "Getting Started" articles designed to make it easy to recruit
    • there is too much misinformation and old info
    • we need renaming, pruning, merging and overall SIMPLIFYING the forums... There should be less information when you look at the forums root... it is overwhelming atm
    • we need a "best of" index, that links to the highest quality articles
    • I think more "content Mods" should be added to tweak things, once a gameplan is established
    • there are too many stickies... some are no longer relevant
    • I think Mods need to be more vigilant of negative posts.  I do not want censorship, but sometimes posts are so negative that they need to be removed... hate when a great thread is killed by a stupid, negative complaint

In a nutshell, this forum should be the heart and soul of our community.  99% of info should be put on it, and it should we organized and updated in a way that fosters recruiting people, and keeping people.
