angryjay93
Dmitry Division Breakdown: 1. Winnipeg 2. Ottawa 3. Pittsburgh 4. Boston 5. Tampa Bay 6. Calgary Overall Breakdown: Top to bottom this division is the most competitive in the league, teams will be separated by only a few points. Winnipeg takes down the top spot with a solid offensive attack and a hard hitting defense. Ottawa will frustrate opponents with Joe Sakic dancing around and Kamensky’s laser beam shot. Pittsburgh’s solid defense and timely scoring will carry them a very long way and Boston’s Doug Gilmour will wreak havoc on the league. Tampa has some offensive questions to answer, but if they can answer those they are just as solid as anyone else in the division. Calgary looks destined to struggle with a pop gun offense, but a solid defensive approach could help keep them in the hunt. Team: Winnipeg User: Kgman Place: 1st MVP: Mike Modano Unsung Hero: It would be Bassen if kgman would shut up about him. Finally, Kgman has his own team in this league, and what will he do with it? He is going to score and hit, its that simple. Modano’s blazing speed will cause problems for every team in the league, pair that with Verbeek’s scoring and 3 big checkers on the ice, and you have yourself a team built out of sheer aggression. But the team is very vulnerable with Don Beaupre in net, there can be some wild nights in Winnipeg with this team. Good: Modano, Kgman won it all with him in classic league way back when, does he still have enough magic left? Bad: Svoboda’s penchant to take penalties could provide more problems in the defensive zone. Ugly: Don Beaupre, he will be the death of this team at some point. Team: Ottawa User: skoolyardpuck Place: 2nd MVP: Joe Sakic Unsung Hero: Alexei Zhitnik You can book this, Joe Sakic will be a top 5 scorer in the league. Sakic will dominate games at times this season and cause frustration league wide. With Kamensky and Zhamnov supporting him, there is a big shot and some solid passing available up front to compliment the offense. Defensively the blueline looks imposing with Alexei Zhitnik and the underrated Mark Howe. Chris Terreri is back again this season and will provide some highlight reel saves, but will quickly give those goals back with some weak play when the play is down around the net. Good: The offense will be deadly, Sakic and Kamensky provide a nice combo Bad: Not necessarily a fast team, could be suspect to some counter attacks. Ugly: The division is toughest from top to bottom, there will be a lot of wars to be had, a bad draw for a good team. Team: Pittsburgh User: MattHurray Place: 3rd MVP: Ed Belfour Unsung Hero: Dmitri Khristich If anyone is poised for a bounce back season its Pittsburgh. After winning the East in gdl1, the Penguins dropped down to miss the playoffs last season, the main reason you ask? Goaltending. A huge upgrade from Puppa to Belfour will give this team all the support it needs to be once again one of the leagues most competitive teams. Pair the upgrade in goaltending with Houge’s playmaking and speed, Khristich’s sniping, and Chelios paired with Samuelsson manning the backline, this team is very formidable. Good: Belfour brings a return to solid goaltending in steel town. Bad: Is Steen the answer as a third winger? We will have to see Ugly: This team isn’t exactly loaded with offense, if they get behind, it may be tough to change their game plan and get back into a game. Team: Boston User: hokkeefan Place: 4th MVP: Doug Gilmour Unsung Hero: Jimmy Carson Last season Boston overcame adversity and snuck into the playoffs with Arturs Irbe in net of all people. If Boston got in with Irbe and no real superstar, what can they do with the likes of Gilmour and Essensa? Those upgrades give Boston instant boosts in both areas that were sorely lacking last season. If the supporting cast of Carson, Messier, Iafrate, and Johannsson provide some decent play, the playoffs are very possible in Bean Town. Good: Doug Gilmour will dominate a lot of games this season Bad: Messier will have to stay on his feet this season to help support Gilmour and Carson Ugly: That defense is a bit suspect to some good hitting, getting the puck out of the zone may be a chore. Team: Tampa Bay User: gr8199kings Place: 5th MVP: Brian Bradley Unsung Hero: Alexei Gusarov Why so low for Tampa Bay? Its all about the roster. Gdl 1, Sweeney, Roenick, and Bradley. Gdl 2 Yzerman, Turgeon, and Zhitnik. Those two teams were loaded with talent, this version doesn’t have that same talent level, especially on offense. Bradley as a number 1 option may struggle this season with only Denis Savard and Ted Donato as support. Tampa is going to have to win a lot of very low scoring games this season to punch a ticket to the big dance, but with all the firepower in the division and league, is that possible? Good: Should be solid defensively with some good hitters and Sodderstrom in net. Bad: Bradley as a number 1 option? Bradley is a great player, but he needs help. Ugly: Who else is going to score aside from Bradley? Savard? I don’t see 75 goals coming out of him. Team: Calgary User: Jamonica Place: 6th MVP: Phil Housely Unsung Hero: Paul Ysebaert So…who wants to score on this team? Lindros is quite possibly the biggest liability in the league, Francis has next to no shot, and Ysebaert is far from an elite sniper. This offense is going to be in tough this year, especially if Phil Housely cant provide the punch every game. If this team can keep it together defensively with Fuhr in net, there may be some hope along red mile, aside from that though, don’t hold your breath. Good: Fuhr in net should keep the team close in a lot of games. Bad: Lindros has had 2 very poor seasons in gdl, why would the 3rd be any different? Ugly: The goal production, where is it going to come from?
