  1. I had made one on GameSurge a while back, but there was just very little interest in it.

Yeah, we topped out at 3 or 4 people? What about QuakeNet? I'm on both EFnet, QuakeNet and GameSurge pretty much allways... I thought it was strange that there wasn't more interest in an IRC channel. Seems like the best thing for a community of this style.

  2. I haven't looked at it at all, since it doesn't create any problems that I've noticed.. :dal_skater_hand_grab: What happens on genesis when the checksum is incorrect? I've been looking at the checksum guide, but haven't tried to "translate" it to SNES since it doesn't seem to matter... I might be wrong.

Maybe wboy can shed some light on this.

But if you need other info just hit me up on aim or pm me for my msn preferably... Offsets, and stuff like that for team data perhaps... But if you're familiar with the gens hex code, the transition should be much trouble. It's basically the same...

  3. Great to hear. Been looking forward to this.

Same here! Hit me up on AIM if you need help beta testing. Is your rom supporting only the default rom or is it reading player names from the rom itself? I've been thinking of this myself, I mean it shouldn't be impossible to read stats and stuff from the save games whilst reading player names from the rom.. But a hell of a lot of work..

One way to do it might be to keep the player names in .txt files instead of hard coding them... I wanted to do that in delphi but couldn't figure out how...

I've seen other games using something like this:

    [Anaheim Mighty Ducks]
    Goalie 1
    Goalie 2
    ...

    [Boston Bruins]
    Goalie 1
    Goalie 2
    ...

Thus making it very dynamic.. I'm especially keeping the 30 team roms in mind, not that I'm playing using gens but for the other people. That brings me to SNES, are you still planning on supporting it?

Great work anyhow! Looking forward to it!

    Cheers!

  4. I liked NHL (well Elitserien actually) 95.. Maybe because it was the only hockey game I had, aside from EA Hockey which really can't be compared.. But I sure loved the season mode 95, it was awesome to be able to play all games during the season. I later got NHL 96 and liked that one even better.

When I played 95 last year or something, it was just way to easy, that was probably the biggest flaw imo... And the insanely poor shot accuracy (half of the shots fired end up in the crowd) is just really sad, that completely ruins game play.

System for above games: Mega Drive

    * = Exception.

  5. hey jeff,

here's a forum on converting files from zmv. to avi...(I think divX player can play avi files)

    http://board.zsnes.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3103

    I hope this helps.

Now that's just complicated... Like I said. ZSNES 1.51 has exporting to xvid (avi) buildt in. The only thing you need is "mencoder" that has to be extracted to the ZSNES directory. It's "lossless" xvid, so you should lose quality.

By the way, how did you make your videos, Jeff? :) Since you're asking about it...

So the only tools I used are ZSNES 1.51 + mencoder, and then Adobe Premiere to put the clips together... Hope this clear things.

  6. Heh, thanks man.. :P Actually it was your video that introduced me to the flip pass goals, so thanks again! :D

Too bad they're so random though, hard to call it skill, but they're still really cool when you get it right. And it seems to work better and better, so I guess you can learn to do it to some rate, but it's gotta be almost impossible to "master".. I was actually only pixels away from making another Nolan-Sundin:ish goal yesterday.

And btw.. #22 in Chicago is Christian Ruuttu :þ

  7. Dude, gprice07, nice play! That reminds me: how do you do a shot block in NHL 95-98 on the Genesis?

Double tap 'A' to block a shot in 96 I think... Not sure, but I think it's enough to press once on 95 (Genesis, never really played them on SNES since they suck). I played an awful lot of 95 and 96 back in the days.. :þ

  8. So.. I finally put together a video of my own. Installed and fooled around a bit with Adobe Premiere yesterday, and some today.

    Here it is:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_ruSsG3Y7I

Some goals and hits and stuff. My favorite is probably the one where Owen Nolan flips the puck over a defender and then Sundin one times it while it's in the air! It's just clips with me vs cpu for now. I have a friend who I play frequently with, but we never recorded any stuff, will probably do so in the future though!

  9. This isn't really on topic, but for those that are using G15 keyboards, you should really try out the macro keys. They're really useful when you're messing around with hex editors, programming, excel etc. for areas where you do one thing multiple times. You can even record "ALT+Tabs", insert delays and such. It's insanely useful and has probably saved med DAYS in time.

    Just Do It!

Text editing: CTRL + arrow keys jumps word to word, adding SHIFT to select word by word... You can click and drag to select text, but you can also double and even triple click... CTRL + Del cuts text (SHIFT + Ins pastes), it's sometimes smoother than using CTRL + X, C, V... The key is just to experiment to find the quickest ways and find out what suits you the best...

  10. "Unlimited Player Stamina with Lines Changes On!"

I tried accomplishing that on snes but it's gotta be some other number on that one, heh.. I switched all occurrences, both Little and Big Endian but no result... Well one of the ~10 or so made the game freeze mid game. I thought, since it was the same value on all games for Genesis it probably would be the same for snes as well, maybe I missed something..

That's one of the 9x hacks that I'm really interested in. Don't like the game play of tired players, never did heh... Semi-auto line changes ftw! Being able to alter the speed boost sounds a bit interesting, but the turning speed even more so! Can probably change game play by an insane amount! For good, for bad? Who knows...

  11. I remember the NHL 97 for Sega Saturn being pure crap, no really, it was really really bad! The graphics were awful and the game play was even worse! But I'm guessing it's another game for PSX, I know NHL 98 was totally different Saturn vs PSX (Saturn didn't even have a referee). So maybe it's not as bad for Playstation. :þ

I don't even remember what the intro was like... I think "Jim Huston" talked between periods, with video and everything haha.. Nah, that was poor. But I guess it was a step into the future... Though I'd want to see a new game without commentators, energy put on game play and other details. I don't mind an arena announcer though. :þ

  12. You have to be kidding. You feel that Gens players are "bullying" the SNES guys so much so that it has resulted in a lack of interest from potential SNES players??? Maybe I just need to take a Sensitivity Training Course (Evan, would you care to add a link on this site for that as well?) but that reasoning doesn't make any sense to me.

Hmm.. Aight.. Sorry I brought it off topic, that wasn't the point of that post, just a guess on one of the reasons that snes aren't that well represented on the forum. I recall that it's been discussed before and people agreed that it might be one reason.. And I mean if some newbie comes in and state that he/she plays snes and then gets instantly flamed about it with "snes sucks you retard" and stuff like that, it's not like the noob will stay around for the fun of it.

The reason I hang around is cause I like to hack and most people are cool and helpful, there are just a few, not even a handful that are a bit over the edge sometimes, nothing that I care about really, but it's hard to ignore. I might be wrong, maybe there just are that few snes players, heh.. I'm sorry if I sometimes express myself oddly, as English isnt my native language, I feel/notice that I tend to exaggerate some expressions and such from time to time.

    Peace out! B)

  13. Although it might be a dead issue by now... Yes, arenacenter is nice! I used a roster update for 2001 and blomman's editor, to get the player stats when I worked on my olympic rom last spring. Haven't checked that site out since then though. But there was updates back to NHL 99 I think.. :þ

  14. In zsnes 1.51 you can export videos to AVI (and other formats) which works really well (maybe you can then open the zmw (w, 1, 2, 3 etc.. the reason that the max is zm9 is cause the savestate files are named zs9, z10, z10 etc.)files from the earlier emulator in this one), apart from that sound doesn't seem to get recorded...

The file mencoder.exe is required and has to be downloaded (~11MB unpacked) and put in the zsnes dir. Maby needs some fiddling to get going, but shouldn't be any problems.

  15. I think snes is pretty well represented (with roms, emulators and other info) on the nhl94.com site, but maybe not on the forum, in fact, some of the genesis players are really unfriendly towards snes players (though this goes the other way as well in some cases). I think that might have "scared" off some potential players.

I for one do not play online. I play with a friend from time to time. And fool around with the snes roms pretty much all the time. I've began work on an editor, but I'm nowhere close to being able to create something like nose, right now it doesn't feel like I'll be able to complete the small things even... I have however made a tool where you can sort of play a season mode (by extracting stats from savestates to an excel spread sheet) that works pretty well. Not released yet though as it's not user friendly. I've made some progress in making it easier to use, but some way to go before I even plan to release it...

Evan: I think it would be a good idea to add the NHL '94 editor that IS available for snes to the "multimedia - download" page. Maybe add the 1.51 version of zsnes (although it doesn't support netplay it does have features like exporting to xvid (avi) !). If you haven't got the editor mentioned I can send it to you or up it here. And how come nose isn't on there? I can see why there's not an actual download link, but maybe redirection to http://www.hexaddicts.com/nose/ and some quick info about it, or is that already available somewhere? Can't find it on the main page either (only a link to the nose forum).

  16. I hardly ever play with offsides on since I just think it's plain boring and that's not what I look for in games. Simple as that.

Though in the NHL 2K series I tend to leave it on, since it suits that kind of game better. In a matter of fact many of the newer games work quite well with offsides. But I prefer having it turned on on the 9x games snes/gens...

And yeah, there's quite a difference between snes and gens regarding offsides, as I played a couple of games on gens this weekend. It was rather odd on gens, don't really remember what it was, but it has something to do with the "offside image" with the ref appearing to late, disappearing or something like that.

I think that I overall like non sim games the best... Though I do like the others as well. :þ

  17. playstation 2 controller is very good as well but only if you use analog sticks the dpad sucks but i have been using a logitech precision lately and it sucks .waiting till friday to get new ps2 controller someone threw it against the wall.eventually i will get genesis controller though

I use ps2 controllers and have used them for years and I like the D-pad... I would kill for one of those Sega Saturn PC-pads though... They must be lovely. The Sega Saturn pad has the best D-pad EVER. There's nothing even worth comparing. So, if you have one and feel suicidal. I can help you, the price is that gamepad.

  18. Video 2

    *new!!*

It's a little long (6 minutes), but I think the editing is better than on the last one. And of course the video quality is infinitely better this time!

Awesome video dude! Looks like the genesis 94 has more deflections (that's the word, right?) than snes, the puck doesn't change direction like that at all. Cool!

I like the play when you rock the guy and when he's laying on the ice, you shoot the puck at him.

Oh my god yes! Even though I knew it was coming I didn't expect it to be that hilarious! I actually laughed out loud... Nice!! :D (at 3:10 for those who don't bother watching all of it, though I can't see why one wouldn't).

And way to beat up the opponent after scoring! That's the way to do it! :D

edit.. The song @ video #2 is: The Bravery - An Honest Mistake... I just had to dig it up

  19. personal edition 6, 7 or 2005? just curious...

Delphi 7 Second Edition.. Are you familiar with Delphi or is it what you use (for NOSE)?

re: iterating thru team players (vs dynamic variables), you should do this with a loop... by that I mean start at a team's first player, read the name length... you know the amount of attribute bytes (constant of all players)

Yeah, then I'm on the right track... That's pretty much what I've been doing, atleast trying to do.

The name length + attribute bytes length gets you to the next player.... if its like the Genesis rom, you know you are at the end of the team when the next player byte name length is 2 (effectively 0).

Thanks! That's great, it looks to be the same with SNES.. I haven't found a way to tell how many goalies there are, I recall there is in GENS (two bytes, 0001 = one goalie and 0011 = two goalies, or something.. Doesn't seem to be anything like that, in either "Endian"). It would be cooler to make it right, in being able to change amount of goalies and leting the functions be fully dynamic, but it'll do with the default amount.

    Once again, thanks wboy!

  20. Nice stuff, was that done in visual basic?

    Nope. Delphi.

And whilie posting, haven't made any real progress, haven't been able to work much on it... It's the deal with dynamic variables that has me totally out there, heh. I have to gather some 300 variables or something, which are different from team to team, and different depending on if player names have been altered. I bet there's a much simpler way of solving it than what I'm doing (well, trying to do anyway)...
