whats the difference between payroll and cap payroll?

Payroll is the actual amount of money spent on players for that season.

Cap Payroll is the amount that contributes towards the cap....and there are many contributing factors.

For example: Say icestorm70 signs for 30 million over 6 years with the sabres. The cap hit is 5 million per year for the team...however the Icestorm's contract may be front loaded(more money paid to him during the early years)...perhaps 7 million for each of the first 2 years, and the other 16 million spread over over the remaining four years of the contract(say 5 million, 4 million, 4 million, 3 million) .

In year 1 of the contract, the sabres have to pay icestorm 7 million but the team only takes a cap hit of 5 million.

In year 6 of the contract, when icestorm is playing for a new contract and scoring 78 goals and getting 127 assists, the sabres are paying him 3 million but still taking a cap hit of 5 million.

Also, If a player is bought out by a team, the team still suffers a cap hit of x amount of dollars even though they no longer have that player.

The islanders still have a cap hit from Alexei Yashin's contract. The cap hit will continue for a few more years even though he hasn't played for the islanders since 2006-2007. Currently, the islanders are not affected much by it since they don't spend anywhere near the cap.

Halifax's site is better, Rage, your site still include the contract of Mike Ratjhe on the Flyers' budget, but he's in the minors since like.... 2-3 years.

Yeah, his site is better!! Didn't look at it until I posted.
