  1. All the playoff coaches are returning players so no new blood. Everyone was a playoff team last year in B as well. From my experience this year it seems everyone came back with something new to their game or refined parts of their game to make this an interesting season. Thanks to mav who very late in the season stepped up and allowed many of the people here to get their 40 games completed.

Winnipeg (Lupz) vs Chicago (jagr) / Reg Season 2 - 1

Lupz make a big impact with a legit team vs last years Rangers (Al Czervik says 'no offense'). It may be obvious but the key to these two players was in their previous matchups Lupz did a great job of limiting JRs chances as only 3 shots in each of jagr's losses. I think if Mr. jagr wants to continue his season so Mrs. jagr will no likey him having to play MORE nhl94 he needs to find ways to get people outside of JR to consistently score. The other thing to consider is Lupz scored a league high 234 goals this season so he throws a lot of pressure at his opponent, most of that pressure coming from Selanne. Lupz really has played great with Winnipeg so its an uphill battle for jagr. I predict Lupz in 6.

Boston (Darko) vs Calgary (TexasPachyderm) / Reg Season 2 - 3

Texas is up 3-1 so far this year. All the games were pretty close but it has been a while since they faced each other since those games were over a month ago. Darko had the lowest GAA in the league and near the top in goals scored where Texas was third in goals scored. In the win Boston did have they jumped out quickly with a big lead in the first. All the closer games were won by Texas. I think there will be many close games in this series and based on their recent past Texas gets the slight edge. I predict Texas in 7.

Quebec (skip) vs Buffalo (mikey mac) / Reg Season 3 - 1

Skip was second in goals scored, most of those from Sakic. Similar scoring distribution for Mikey from Mogilny. With Skip's offensive power and Mikey giving up the most goals of all playoff coaches this is going to be tough for the Sabres. I predict skip in 5.

Detroit (jackandjose) vs LA (wallywojo) / Reg Season 3 - 1

jNj finally gets a powerhouse Detroit and has had a pretty good regular season. LA not so much but played a bit better lately. Detroit had a good goal differential in their matchup this season. jNj really loves to use Dino and his size/shot to create his chances. I put this series on Zhitnik. If he decides he wants to fly up ice then wallywojo will have to rely on too much manual goalie to stop Yzerman and Dino. I predict jNj in 6.

  2. Capitals vs Rangers - NYR in 5

I think the scoring depth of the Rangers will be too much for the Caps to handle.

Lightning vs Canadiens - MTL in 5

With Price in net and the speed Montreal throws at you the Lightning will not keep pace beyond the Stamkos line. This really sets up another great Eastern Finals.

Flames vs Ducks - ANH in 4

A series where whoever won between Van/Cal were meeting the buzzsaw. I predicted a sweep for the first round for the Ducks and a second here. This has less to do with how strong I believe in Anaheim. Its more to do with who they are playing.

Wild vs Blackhawks - CHI in 7

I am quite worried about this series as a Hawks fan. I think that what pushed me to decide was that Q finally looks to be scratching Versteeg and actually using Teuvo. This will be great hockey to watch, probably the best series in this round.

  3. Anyone else watch gm 1 of Hawks v Perds? Great comeback. Can't blame Crawford for really any of them but possibly the second. I've referred to Roszival as Old Yeller and he really needs Q to step up and take him out behind the shed and put him out of his misery.

Started watching Min v StL. What a goal from Zucker. Lets keep the discussion going. Always interesting to see points of view from different regions.

  4. Anaheim over Winnipeg in 4

    Vancouver over Calgary in 7

St. Louis over Minnesota in 7

    Chicago over Nashville in 5

    Rangers over Pittsburgh in 5

    Islanders over Washington in 7

    Montreal over Ottawa in 5

Tamp Bay over Detroit in 6

Kaner is practicing full contact. Lets Go Hawks!!!

  5. I agree with trudatman on the realism as well. When I was working on my version of the 2015 ROM I used Skip's as a base. I then started with the concept of only one player in the game should get a 6 for each category. I tried to stay as close to that as possible but it wasn't fair for example to give Charra the 6 for shot power and give Shea Weber a 5. Also some unique players require another 6 to make it close what they contribute on the ice, such as Jagr.

Moving forward with that principle I started with my Blackhawks and used the eye test for their ratings. In the end I settled on 84 for Toews, 83 for Kane, and 80 for Keith. I used that as a barometer for all other teams and individuals. From there I used the eye test for teams again that I have seen a lot of, especially the Wild, Blues, Kings, Avalanche, Jets, former Hawks players. I then tried to go by stats and get a picture for what a player who has a certain statline would be like. The problem is that if you decide you want to go for realism then I felt I was really half-assing it. I then googled scouting reports and found that The Hockey News has a scouting report for each player. Go here to the team index, then choose roster, and finally select each player to get their report. One of the difficulties I encountered here was how to handle the 'inconsistent' knock on players. Usually I dinged them in awareness but as has been mentioned who knows what real impact that has on the AI. You also have to consider if you use the game without the hot/cold fix there will be fluctuation in their ratings and this can help account for someone who is inconsistent.

After doing a complete rerank last year of the NHL 95 rom from 2007 to 2014 and again this year on 94 I think I have a feel for a good sim type system. If you are going for a more classic feel with more fun and not bogged down as much by realism I would follow what Skip uses since his ROM really is fun and in line with the spirit of NHL 94.

    Hope this helps.

  6. With the community here I am just curious if there are any other playing strategy board games on iOS. If so, post here with your info and maybe we can get an NHL94 forum game going. I play the following:

    Carcassone

    Cataan

    Le Havre

    Brief History of the World

    Galaxy Trucker

    Tigris and Euphrates

  7. completely agree. When you look at the parts on that Buffalo lineup you would expect their output to be higher than it usually ends up being. The numbers are slightly better for Buffalo as you can see but if you changed Fuhr for either Vernon or McLean I am sure most would take them over Buffalo.
