Netplay via RetroArch Netplay with RetroArch is very simple. Since RetroArch is a frontend for multiple emulator cores, setting up netplay for any core is very simple (as long as it supports it!), and is the same procedure. For Genesis, we are using the Genesis Plus GX core for netplay. For SNES, we are using the Snes9x core for netplay. For installing RetroArch , please check out this page on nhl94online.com - Getting Started The advantages to using RetroArch for netplay over Gens or ZSNES are numerous. Though ZSNES 1.42 has great netplay, we still require Hamachi for connections, since ZBattle does not exist anymore. Gens uses Kaillera for netpl…

With the upcoming season of Classic, I would like everyone to use Direct Connect for netplay. As of this date (10/14/2019), relay server is not working. This is actually very simple to set up. Just requires a few minutes of work, and more time to find the instructions for your router/modem. Check out this video from therexershow - RetroArch - How to Set up Port Forwarding Introduction When playing a game against someone via netplay (P2P - Peer to Peer), one player acts as the host (or server), and the other acts as the client. The host creates the game, and the client connects to the host. In order for a connection to be made, the host needs to …

Creating a Save State in RetroArch This process will be the same for both Genesis and SNES. Before your first time playing online against an opponent, please make sure the following settings have been set: Under Settings->Saving, set Save State Auto Index to ON. This will eliminate the need to increment save states after each game, and prevent overwriting of saves (very useful!!). Note: This should already be set if you used the files from nhl94online.com. Check your default save state directory - Make sure you know where the saves will be stored. This can be changed and set to whatever you'd like. The default path i…

EDIT 11/14/2020 - This has changed much since the original write-up was done. I updated it to RetroArch version 1.8.8. This is a guide to setting up 4-way play on RetroArch. Useful for the 2on2 ROM. The 2on2 ROM for both Genesis and SNES are included with the RetroArch package that you can find on nhl94online.com. Please make sure you have loaded the ROM at least once before (Load Core->Genesis Plus GX or Snes9x, then Load Content->Start Directory->Genesis or Super Nintendo->2on2 ROM). The person hosting should have direct connect set up. This will give the smoothest connection for everyone. This also allows you to swap teammates an…

EDIT: This is for "long form" experiences with RetroArch. For Tips and Troubleshooting, check out the Tips and Troubleshooting thread. Please post any issues, good or bad experiences you've had during setup or net play here. Hopefully there will be someone who's had the issue and can respond, or we can figure out how to fix it (if possible). I want to hear gripes/issues/concerns and if you like using the program. I want to hear the good and bad. I think some people will love it, some will hate it. The point is we are looking for a better and easier net play experience for all. If RetroArch doesn't fit that description, I'll keep looking for something else. …

As of now, save states from either Gens or RetroArch (using the Genesis Plus GX core) can be uploaded the site. This might change in the future. Make sure you select the type of save you are uploading (Gens is the default selection). SNES is set up as well. SNES will show the ZSNES and RetroArch (Snes9x core) options. As far as making a save state in RetroArch, I will make a separate post about this.

This tutorial will show you how to create a savestate from the ZSNES emulator for use in stat leagues. 1. At the end of the game, when the three stars of the game screen is up, press F2 to create the savestate file. You will see a notification on the bottom left of the emulator that says, "STATE 0 SAVED" (note: the state number can be any number from 0-9, explained later). This is what it looks like without the scoreboard in the way: 2. That's it! You've created the savestate file. The file will be located in the same folder as your ZSNES emulator and will be called nhl94.zs*, where " * " represents the savestate slot: In this example, …

Hey guys! I was having some issues with Retroarch today. I'm streaming the Vancouver Canucks 1993-94 Season and my record was 9-2-0 so far. But when I finished the scheduled game, I checked my record and it was 6-1-0. The program also froze a few times during the stream as well. Any help figuring this out would be greatly appreciated!

Have this persistent issue with RetroArch where every time I play a different version I have to update my controls. If I play with Genesis and save a remap file, I just load that when playing Genesis? If I'm playing SNES, I just load that? Isn't this supposed to work or am I missing something? I swear I'm not crazy - for this reason - but every time I switch playing one version over the other I have to redo all the binds again and it's maddening. Having to replug / unplug one every time isn't civilized.

So I recently discovered the magic of RetroArch, in particular the Core RetroArch with Genesis Plus GX Wide which gives us the ability to use up all the wasted real estate on both sides of the screen. For NHL games on Genesis, this is a nice feature considering that the game uses a camera to pan over an area that is larger than the field of view. We can now play with the entire horizontal area of the rink exposed at all times, instead of the panning view we are accustomed to with the camera that follows the player positions. There is a setting in Quick Menu > Core Options > Video > Extra Columns to draw in H40 for widescreen which allows us to determine how…

There are 2 major forms of latency (or lag, whichever you'd like to call it): Input Latency - The delay from pressing a button, to the display of that button action on the screen. Network Latency - The delay in communication from one computer to another. In our case, the amount of time it takes to for one player's button press to show up on the other player's screen. Latency is usually displayed in ms (milliseconds). An emulator displays video by frames. Most emulators use an ~60Hz refresh rate (similar to the consoles they emulate), which means it displays 60 video frames per second. The video on the screen refreshes every 16.7ms (1 sec…

I see the standard notifications (fps, ping etc) and of course you get quick notifications regarding netplay players joining and disconnecting. Would there be a way to display all members of the netplay room in a corner of the screen?

I am using a USB adapter for a SNS-005 controller. When I load up a rom, it seems to acknowledge the controller just fine. But once I make a selection and move to a submenu of any kind, the A-B-X-Y-L-R buttons all stop functioning. Sometimes only the A button will function instead of none of them, but then it acts like the B button. This is my first time trying to use retroarch, so I'm sure I'm just screwing something up. Any ideas?

Starting with playoffs in the leagues coming up (as of 2/14/22), I would like everyone to start using the RA 1.10 package. This can be downloaded from the nhl94online.com front page as of today. To update, download the package, then set your name in Settings-User, restart RA. Copy over your ROMs folder from 1.8.8 to the RA 1.10 folder, and choose "Replace" if asked. DO NOT copy over your retroarch.cfg file from 1.8.8! There are a lot of changes made between config files from 1.8.8 and 1.10. Improvements Controllers - 1.10 should have less fussing with controller binds. It should recognize more controllers out of the box, without the need to ma…

Attached here are the new modified cores to allow netplay between a Mac and a PC. Nothing else is changed in the core, so they should work just like the old ones, but with this added function. There is a separate PC and Mac core. Follow the instructions below: For PC: Download: genesis_plus_gx_libretro.dll. Copy this file into your RetroArch-1.10-Win64/cores folder, and choose "Replace" when asked. No other change is needed. For Mac: Download: genesis_plus_gx_libretro.dylib. Open a Finder window, navigate to your Documents folder, open the RetroArch folder, then the cores folder, and copy this file into there. Choose "Replace" when asked. No o…

Hi there, I use a fat GENs 3 button with a RetroUSB adapter. I notice that sometimes, albeit rarely, I get this weird glitch: 1. I am going to one time it 2. just before the one time happens, but after I have pressed the C button, it pauses And when I say pauses, I mean RA suddenly shows the menu, and the game is totally halted. Then I have to navigate to "Resume Game" and all flow is lost. (And I when I resume, I am too sheepish to do anything but dump the puck, if I can, but sometimes the already registered one timer goes through, creating anger and confusion from my opponent, lol.) Does anyone else experience this? It is rare. Probably 1x per 10…

Sorry if this is already dealt with elsewhere on the board. If so, feel free to point me in the right direction! I recently bought (and hacked) a Mega Drive / Genesis Mini and, along with everyone else that owns one, have loaded with it maybe 1,000 old school games across the Sega, Nintendo & TurboGrafx systems up to now. Neo Geo and others to follow. Anyway, I have (obviously) NHL '94 and pretty much every other hockey game on the older systems loaded up. I prefer the MD / Genesis version of the game and am using Genesis Plux GX (v.1.7.4) as my emulator. However, the game seems to run a little fast compared to the original game (which is actually pl…

Hi, I recently had some extra time, and got port forwarding working. But here is the thing: it seems slower to me! Using Gens (or RA), there is a very consistent 'lag'. (But it is not erratic, or spikey. It is consistent. Feels like a small delay, in the milliseconds. But it is throwing off my timing, and making things seem sort of "floaty"; like I am playing underwater.) Anyone have any insights? Here is my setup: Win10 wired connection (I disabled the wifi drivers, too) Fiber Internet (very fast) Bell Home Hub 3000 router / Sagemcom 5566 In the Port Forwarding, I added two rules: 1 for Gens (port 27886 UDP only) 1 for RA (port 55435, TCP …

For everyone playing in online games and leagues, please update to RetroArch version 1.8.5. The download is now available on http://nhl94online.com. For those of you who have the previous version currently installed (1.7.9): Windows Users - Download the package from nhl94online.com. Extract the folder to where you wish. Navigate to your RetroArch-1.7.9-32 folder, and copy your "retroarch.cfg" file and your ROMs folder to the new RetroArch 1.8.5 folder. That should keep your ROM files and all your settings the same. Note, you will have to load the ROMs once locally to have them show up on your "Load Recent" list again. Mac Users - Download the package…

I can't check in SNES but I can shoot. I deleted retroarch and started from scratch, and I still can't check, but I can shoot. Is this some kind of rootkit that Gary Bettman paid Russian hackers to design? Anyone else have this experience? Here's what I got: 3 prong outlets Ethernet (cable) Saturn USB controller Chaos Retroarch guide Genesis player who sincerely appreciates SNES version and takes back anything bad I ever said about SNES'94 I just want to check, please.
