  1. Do you think this proposal is what made EA put '94 on the PS2 version of NHL06? If so.. we do have some sway with them! Good work Evan..
  2. Note: The byte count is actually a 16-bit value with the high byte stored at 59626(decimal) and the low byte at 59627. It maxes out at a value of 0x0168(hex) or 360(decimal), which is 60 goals (60=360/6). If more than 60 goals are scored in a game, the first 59 goals are recorded and the very last goal is recorded in the final position. For example, in a game with 74 total goals, 59626-59627 holds the value 360(dec), so 60 goals are recorded (60=360/6). The goals recorded are goals 1-59 and goal 74. Goal 74 is recorded in the 60th position. For the penalty summary, the value has a max of 0xF0(hex) = 240(decimal) = 60 penalties (60=240/4). It's a 16-bit value stored at 59988-59989, but it can be interpretted as an 8-bit value at 59989, since it never actually uses byte 59988. The scoring summary, however, can potentially use both bytes.
  3. I like how in 94, hitting a guy into the boards makes him get hit harder. If you time things correctly, you can catch a player too close to the boards .. and "WHAMO! Big mistake, sucker!" It's just one of those lovable '94 quirks! I wouldn't want him to be able to hold on to the puck. But it would be cool if they wobbled sometimes instead of always just falling down.
  4. Good stuff : ) One little note.. when you say 'opaque,' I think what you mean to say is 'semi-transparent.' 'Opaque' means you can't see through it. If they're going to redo the game for a new platform, I think they should go for four buttons instead of 3. The tough thing about redoing NHL94 is that a lot of what we love about the game are its quirks (that is, its bugs!). What are thoughts on goalie control? Is it good or bad that you have to hold down the B button for a while to take control? I kind of like it.. You have to plan ahead.. I think the *main* thing that turns me off all other hockey games is how easy it is to turn and control your player. In 94, you have to really have the 'feel' of the game to get your guys to do what you want. You have to master things like the spin-stop. You need to carefully predict your opponent in order to check him or intercept his pass, because if you mess up, you're totally out of position.
  5. I believe this is what you're looking for: http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/forum/viewtopic.php?t=316
  6. My votes are for Yake and MacIver. I taunt my friends while trying to go end-to-end whenever MacIver gets the puck. "Heeere comes MacIver!"
  7. The worst starting player is Scott Mellanby on Florida. His speed varies from 32-39, and there isn't really anyone better to replace him with. I was playing a friend once, and Mellanby picked up a loose puck past the red line for a breakaway.. I exclaimed, "NOoooooOOooo!!!" because I thought he'd have a good breakaway chance and I'd have no chance of catching him.. but after a couple seconds, I realized that this was THE SLOWEST player I'd ever seen.. so I got a guy to come back and take him out. Before he even reached the blue line. It was like that moment in Austin Powers with the steam roller.. "NNOoooOOOOoo.............oOOo!!"
  8. Yeah, I like being shorthanded, too (when playing the computer, anyway -- against real people, it can be tough being shorthanded)
  9. Mark Lamb is key with Ottawa . Him and Baker are killer together. Keep Turgeon on for some speed, and bench Kudelski!. that's the most horrible 'wink' smiley i've ever seen. He looks like something *very* uncomfortable is happening to him.
  10. I like the tough goalies. I'm in the 30-team stats league, and games were usually pretty close. I don't think I scored more than 5 goals in any game, and I had a 34-9-4 record. I won a lot of games by just one or two goals with my goalie saving my butt in the last minute with miracle saves on one-timers. I think the original ROM had low goalies so that bad players could still play the game without being frustrated, since it's very hard to score until you learn some moves.. and it's hard to learn the moves if you aren't scoring : P For experienced players, better and more balanced goalies are needed to keep things close. I can understand that there aren't really any guys deserving 6 in skating, especially with there being no all star skills competition this year to set a couple guys apart from the pack (still, no one these days inspires the fear guys like Bure used to). I'd still like to see a couple guys in the 90s overall, though.. Jagr and Thornton blew the rest of the league out of the water in points this year (too bad Forsberg wasn't healthy). One of the things that made 94 so great, I think, was that the great players felt .. great! : ) In newer games, the players all feel pretty much the same (nhl2006 on the xbox just bores me). It's nice for some of them to have some personality. I like that the players are closely balanced in the ROM, but having a couple superstars is fun. Either way, this is a great pair of ROMs, and I can't wait for the new ROM and the next season of the stats league.. actually.. Roloson is earning his 98 rating so far in the playoffs Who'd have expected EDM to be up 2-1
  11. A few minutes times 30*41=1230 games.. At just one minute per game, that's still 20.5 hours
  12. A friend of mine did this to me a couple nights ago. We were playing 2-on-1 (2 friends against me) with ASW-vs-ASW. I got a fluke goal with 7 seconds left in the third to apparently win it 5-4. My friends switched controllers, making the better player the centreman. I said, "It's impossible." I just tried to check him off the faceoff, but I bounced off his centreman (Roenick) and checked down my other friend's player. The first friend went in and scored on a deke. 0:00 left. Outrageous. I won in OT, though . Too bad.. they deserved the win with that goal.
  13. There are some great players online. I never thought I was THE BEST (I'd only played 3 or 4 people before playing online), but I thought I was up there. I was doing well in the oNHL94 stats league, but now I'm getting crushed in nhl94.net! Even if you are "the best" when you arrive on the online scene (unlikely), once you play some people, they will learn some of your techniques and you may find that the next time you play them, they can beat you. There are just so many techniques you can pick up from different people.
  14. Thanks for making these ROMs. Some thoughts on a few things: Goalies: * Roloson: I do think he's one of the better goalies in the league and had a ~.930 save% over the previous two seasons, but he has a higher rating than Kiprosoff and Luongo, which isn't right. He lost the number 1 position to Fernandez this year. * Legace and Osgood having the same rating. Legace's stats have been significantly better this year. * Cloutier seems a bit overrated, and Auld a bit underrated. Ottawa: * Meszaros led the league in +/- for almost the entire season, which I think warrants a DefAw better than 2. * Chara has a 100+MPH shot, but has only a 4 Shot Power rating. * Fisher is a very aggressive player, one of those guys you can tell is always working his hardest. He's really exciting to watch, actually. His 0 in fighting is way too low, too (though fighting doesn't matter in '94..). Elite Players: * There are no skaters with an overal rating over 90. Is there a reason for this? Forsberg 88, Jagr 84, Thornton 82... I'd like to see some 90+ guys. * Why does no one get a 6 speed? I don't know who I'd give it to, but I think a few players should have it. Checking: * Since checking in NHL94 is actually determined largely by the weight of the players, maybe the weight stat should be used to indicate their hitting and not their actual weight. Chara is a weakling in the ROM due to his weight. When Kariya can take out Chara with ease.. something is wrong. : ) Chara should be a joy to have on D, but he's useless due to his inability to hit.
  15. Alright, thanks, I found it : ) For reference, the values start at hex address FE18E.
  16. Thanks for the replies. I'll have to try later (just about to leave..).
  17. Does anyone know how to edit the overall rating for the teams? I can't find it in NOSE. Does anyone know the addresses of the ratings in the ROM? Thanks
