  1. Ok I have to step out. I am in B1 and my list goes like this: 01 CHI 02 DET 03 BUF 04 BOS 05 WPG 06 VAN 07 CGY
  2. So can we have some auto selects for B1? I can't hang around all day (Though I pmed Raphael my order... But if I am watching live I may switch it...)
  3. I think people should be allowed to fillin for no shows when it does not conflict with there participation, but without a fee. It seems bad faith to me to double charge people, since the spots were already paid for. (Even with Smozoma's idea of using people eliminated. In that case, it seems exploitative to charge what amounts to newbs a double entrance fee for the priveledge of being cannon fodder twice. Also I think it would be counter productive. For instance, without paying double I would be cannon fodder again, even on the other console, but I would bever pay again knowing I am going to get killed.) These spots are paid for. Let anyone that doesn't have a conflict have them. Also, I would not make any effort replacing them befre game day. The organizers have enough n their plate, plus you never know what will happen gameday. Some of the replacement replacements may not show?
  4. Thanks! And how many teams per league usually? (If this info is out there, sorry, just point me to a link.)
  5. I registered on nhl94online several days ago. And just today I played a test game against Jack Vandal and he told me I was confirmed. But, I am a little paranoid because it is coming down to the wire here (the Draft is tomorrow). BIG QUESTION: Is there a way for me to verify I am good-to-go for the Classic League? (Maybe some sort of status check on nhl94onlinecom?) EDIT: I just saw http://www.nhl94online.com/html/waiting-list.php But how does the draft work, and how many teams get used? I am #41 on the list. Does that mean I will be on the waiting list cuz there are not enough teams?
  6. Hey I am on AIM right now hoping to squeeze a test game in before tomorrows deadline... It is 2:15 EST. Anyone available? AIM: aqualizard94 Can a vet invite me to the AIM blast group, that would make it easier to hookup? Right now I am just pinging a handful of vet names I have collected form the forum here, but most are offline.
  7. Hello, I am ready to give this a whirl. AIM: aqualizard94 Available some Fridays 5-10pm, Sun all day, an Mon-Thur 9 to 10p, EST. Hopefully I can get my test game in and get in the league...
  8. That is exactly right. You could use the engine or really the whole game year after year, with minor tweak/improvements. That is in fact what EA did from 1991 until 1994 with the game we know and love, and possibly longer.. EDIT: Grrrr... multiquote did not work.
  9. Yeah, that is what I was thinking, too. You could have the game have 3o "blank" teams, with so-and-so many "blank" players on each, and then let people customize them, and export the data files they create. The beauty would be allowing users to download and share these data files. You could have every imagneable scenario (historic rosters, present day teams and rosters, Olympic squads, etc.) without worrying about intellectual property. I think.
  10. I have done some research and can answer my own questions. Jim Simmons did the original programming, and all programming for the hockey series, up to and including NHLPA'93. He also came up with the vertical scrolling 3/4 view. He also did the original Madden. He did this all in his early 20s! Sooooo... I would ask Mr.Brooks to comment on the programming skills of Jim Simmons, and to compare him to other developers he has worked with. (My feeling is the guy must be the Mozart of Sega Genesis programming.) EDIT: DARN IT! I just saw you already did the interview. Oh well.
  11. This is the way to go, IMO. It would be so cool to use NHL'94 as the "goal", but programmed in a modern language for a PC or a modern console. My dream would be to have it still look pixelated, but with the exact same feel and physics of the Genesis version. Once you have that basis, build on that by adding more bells and whistles. (Eliminating bugs, adding drop passes, etc.) There should be a kickstarter for this! I bet a lot of people would throw in some $$$ to get this going! It would also be amazing if there could be a contest to make a prototype, that just showed one skater doing a shootout with a goalie, with the top down view that we know and love. If a bunch of people entered the contest, with a reward of like $5000 plus a contract to design the full game, we'd be able to get rid of the pretenders. I think with just a prototype that had skating, shooting and goalie control you'd be able to determine if the programmer/s could recreate the "magic".
  12. Yeah? That is good to know. What do I have to do to "emulate correctly"? All I have been doing is loading the ROM and pressing start. What else required?
  13. One big difference is speed. From what remember, the first hockey (was it EA or NH Hokcey?) was very fast. Then in '93, it was very much slowed down. Then in '94 -- like Goldilocks would say -- was somewhere in between and just right.
  14. Yes, I agree with "tourney was to prove who has the most diverse skill set in the game. Who can play with any team, adapt and win," and I much prefer the way it was done here. I don't want all Chi/Det either. Variety is the spice of life, right? I don't play online and I am not on the same tier as most guys here. I have one friend I pay with in Toronto, and he almost always takes Mtl and I almost always take Buffalo. The tourney has inspired us to mix it up more too, and it is a much cooler experience now.
  15. Geeze man, thanks! You are everywhere. That page of your was exactly what I was talking about. However, I still do not understand the "shorthand" numbers. In my quote above I ask: >> "And how is a 3/2 shot possible? (Is it a fraction?)" I am guessing this shorthand means the 3 is show power, and the 2 is shot accuracy, so it is not a fraction. Right?
  16. Hello, can someone explain the ratings used here? Things like: In the game, the ratings are numbers from 0-100. How does this square with the numbers above? And how is a 3/2 shot possible? (Is it a fraction?) Sorry for this newb question, which I am sure has been answered, I just can't find the info I need to understand these ratings. Thanks, aqua
  17. Toronto and nearby Toronto had more entrants than any place else, which is not a surprise. What is a surprise -- to me, anyway -- is that both the Genesis winner (Kgman) and SNES winner (Mikail F) are from Toronto. It is quite a coincidence. (Although since a good chunk of competitors were from Toronto, as I mentioned, not against all odds.) I wonder if there was a "Home Team" advanatge at play? (Certainly lack of travel time/fatigue would be a bonus?)
  18. I see. But were there any replacements that came because of your radio spot? (Who had no relationship to the person they were replacing?) And how many replacements for Genesis and SNES would you estimate? (I am just tryig to wrap my head around how big of an issue it was, and how (or if) we can improve how we handle it.)
  19. So there were quite a few no shows. I am wondering, were there any game day replacements for these no shows? When I heard Halifiax's radio spot, and he mentioned there would be spots at the tourney available due to no shows, I hoped some of the spots would get filled? Did this happen at all? Does anyone have any ideas on how to improve this situation? (Obviously, there will always be no shows, but maybe there is a way to fill the spots on game day?)
  20. I thought the whole affair was excellent. I give it an A-, but considering this was the first one, I am surprsied it went as smooth as it did. I think you got these things right: 1. the venue 2. format/brackets seemed good... the best guys really did advance 3. coin flip arrangement seemed fair 4. the spreadsheet and having it automatically update and checkable online These things could be improved 1.some sort of simple PA system, with a few announcements (like at 9:15, an announcnement saying "Let the games begin", and the odd "John Doe you are wanted on Genesis System #2 for a match") 2. I would have a couple community computers or even a whiteboard that shows the brackets as they change. It was hard using my phone to check things out and find my match ups because it is so damn small Other 1. I noticed there were no referees for my games, and the rules said there would be? This wasn't a problem because they guys I played were cool/reasonable, so this was no biggie to me. 2. There should not be an ultimate winner, there should just be an SNES champ and a Genesis champ each year and that's that. (I think this was done for the movie this year, so if this tourney happens agina I hope there won't be the need for an overall winner.)
  21. An export/download would be great, thanks so much! (The "save as" didn'twork right for me.)
  22. Is it possible to download the Google Spread sheet to save locally? I wanted to do so but don't see how?
  23. I am truly amazed that an unknown guy (not a regular online player) won the SNES and then the whole thing. WHo is this Mikail F.? Where is he from? How did the final go against KGman? Was he good on Genesis, too? And SNES-wise, was he just dominating? It is amazing to me that someone could have enough skill to win WITHOUT the benefit of regular online play? How could he have honed his craft? I personally think it is cool that there could be someone so good that is unknown out there. Kind of magical. Maybe he developed a style that was totally unlike the online style of the pros, so playing an isolated game actually helped? Can anyone provide insights on this Mystery Man who took it all?
  24. So did kgman win the whole thing or just the genesis bracket?
