  1. A good point many people are bringing up is... why do the blue lines have to be orange? Why can't they stay dark blue and the middle line stay red? I'm not calling defensemen "Orangeliners".
  2. These are all great suggestions... I'm taking notes from everyone's ideas and putting them all into consideration for the proposal to EA. I feel a great point that was brought up was the possibility to re-issue the game with the next release (nhl2k6?). A package deal with nhl2k6 and the "classic" hockey game having the lastest roster updates and some of the other features we've mentioned above. That could be one option. The other options being reselling the game itself with all the updates/features we've mentioned and the last option being the possibility of getting the source code for the game. As of right now, the first option seems most reasonable if I were EA since they've already done it with the madden series. Keep the thoughts coming, and I will try to post the proposal document here sometime this week for comments. -Evan
  3. Hey everyone, Just wanted to update you guys with the EA thing. So it turns out that the sales guy where I work is going to be meeting up with the Vice President of EA in a couple of weeks. I will be putting together some stuff for him to consider and read regarding making a "new version" of NHL94, or being able to obtain the rights/source code to the game. I'm referring to this as a "proposal" for EA. I'm going to be explaining how the older games (mostly nhl93-nhl94) had a great thing going and creating a new version of this game would be extremely successfull in many ways. Anyway, what I'm asking from you guys is to reply with any ideas/suggestions for EA and this "new version" of the game. I'm not expecting anything out of this, but it's worth trying. I'll need these ideas/suggestions by the first week in April because I have to have this ready by April 7th. I know this sounds like it could be a waste of time, but you have to try to make things happen. EA isn't doing good so at least I know he will read what we give him. Thanks for helping out! -Evan
  4. I'm curious to know how many people out there are fanatics of this game? If the current members of this forum could spread the word around asking them to sign up here, that would be awesome. I want to get some sort of idea how many people would be interested in this game if it were to be updated and edited from the source code. I consider these 4 games to be a part of the "good" EA series: NHL92 NHL93 NHL94 NHL95 Anyone who thinks these games were the best, please have them sign up and become active here so that our community can grow. Thanks alot guys! -Evan
  5. Of course EA isn't going to listen to that idea, and it's a shame. I work in the videogame field (we do animation for Rockstar games), there's a small possibility that I could get in touch with someone at EA. Our sales guy knows some people there, but I wouldn't hold my breath on that getting anywhere. The more likely (but not that likely) scenerio is that we get the rights to the older games' source code, and with the help of some programmers, update the game. Does anyone know of programmers that would want to be in on this project if it were possible? Or even programmers that could enlighten us to the situation we are currently in? Taking NHL92, NHL93, and NHL94... taking the better qualities of each game, and putting them into one game that would also include some extra features. These are some of the features that would have to be in the game: 01 - online play incorporated into the actual game (with user records online and such) 02 - season mode (the ability for custom length seasons and team numbers) 03 - the ability to edit any player, team name, colors, jerseys, ice logos, etc. 04 - the ability to create players, trade players, have a free agent pool, etc. 05 - more stats tracked 06 - injuries to be more descriptive 07 - fighting (of course) 08 - ability to edit the audio in the game There's plenty more but that's just to get an idea. We have the ability to view the .bin file in assembly language and in hex. Maybe having access to the source code would be our key to completely editing this game to perfection. For us to continuously find ways to edit the NHL94 bin file seems endless, and very time consuming. I feel this community can work together to get this game to the point of what we want. I will be getting my ideas and thoughts together on this subject to begin pursuing it. Through solution77 on this forum, we have Mark Lesser's address. My cousin and I will make a serious attempt to call him and see if he's interested in helping us if he could. Mark B Lesser Surry, ME (207) 667-0377 Please continue the ideas and thoughts on this.. it may sound ridiculous, but I feel it can be done. -Evan
  6. I was thinking a little today after hearing that EA's stock went down $8 and they're not doing too hot right now. They're certainly not getting anywhere with these new NHL games they keep putting out every year. What could it take for them to take the gameplay of the 93-94 games and update the teams, rosters, some graphics, and just "update" the game. They could leave the lower quality graphics, but keep one-timers, fighting, etc and I swear that game would be a HUGE part of the video game history. I need you guys to brainstorm some ideas on how we could explain what kind of turnaround this could be for them, and how awesome it would be for all of us videogame hockey lovers. That game would be so popular. Just think about it. There's great gameplay, and adding in new features like editing teams, players, colors etc (the stuff we like to do) into that game along with other modern features like recording a game, online play, records for players and team stats. (if this game was online, it could be a benefit for it to be lower quality graphics) I could probably layout the organization of the game! Anyway, what are some thoughts about this guys?
  7. Yes, this is a good topic. My favorite team to play with is Toronto (using Clark-Gilmour-Andreychuk-Ellett-Macoun), but I have about as much fun playing with almost any team if they're having a good game. No passes bouncing off player's sticks and skates, no cheap plays by the opposing team, and a couple slapshots through the 5-hole and we're looking good. Toronto, Philadelphia, Montreal, Los Angeles, NY Islanders, and Winnipeg are usually my top picks to play with. My 2 least favorite teams to play with are Pittsburgh and St. Louis (unless Brett Hull is on). This is all based on the Genesis version.
  8. Duh, haha! Thanks Red! It was really late at night when I posted that. I don't know how to change the playoff matchups, that one could be tricky.
  9. There's been plenty of great moments in NHL94 for me. The first one that comes to mind has to be the time 12 goalies skated on the ice at the end of a game on Genesis. It was totally insane. I have the videos of it on the nhl94.com videos page if you want to see. The video quality wasn't great because all we had was a cheesy webcam. Another great moment was the time my cousin and I played a 40 game season with the original NHL94 for Genesis, and we were playing game 7 of the finals. We recorded the whole game on video. Teams that made it to the finals for us were Chicago-Vancouver. It was game 7 of the finals in OT, and guess who scores on a one-timer.... Murray Craven! Vancouver was our NHL94 champs.
  10. Yes I do (I decided to look for it and found it just now). Here's how to edit team's overall ratings: Here's the breakdown, they pretty much go in order except for WPG comes before WAS and the Allstar teams are at the end. There's a random "45" in the middle of the teams, not sure what this means. ANA = 33 (51 rating in the game) BOS = 4C (76) BUF = 49 (73) CAL = 4B (75) CHI = 4E (78) DAL = 43 (67) DET = 4B (75) EDM = 43 (67) FLA = 34 (54) HAR = 42 (66) LA = 4A (74) MON = 49 (73) NJ = 44 (68) NYI = 42 (66) NYR = 4A (74) OTT = 37 (55) PHI = 45 (69) PIT = 4B (75) QUE = 47 (71) SJ = 38 (56) ? = 45 - not sure what this is TB = 38 (56) TOR = 48 (72) VAN = 47 (71) WPG = 48 (72) WAS = 46 (70) ASE = 5B (91) ASW = 59 (89) I hope that helps. A good reference link to a quick decimal to hex conversion chart can be found here: Decimal to Hex Conversion Chart
  11. While poking through the code of NHL94, I found where to change the penalty's lengths. I'm not sure if hackers have been using this already, so I made a how-to page on the nhl94 site. Editing the Penalty Lengths and Names Also, here's some screenshots from a few games I played where I made all the penalty lengths 5 minutes. I hope this is useful!
  12. As far as I know, we can't burn the ROM version and play it on SegaCD. What you could do is find out how to burn a CD of ROM's to play on Dreamcast, Xbox, and most of the newer systems. I had a CD of Genesis and Nintendo ROM's that played on a Dreamcast. I don't know how the person who gave it to me accomplished this, though I'm sure you can find it somewhere.
  13. yea its funny.. I just read about it before coming here to see Swos posted about it... here's the picture if you haven't seen it...
  14. Hey, I actually just did this as a test, and I like it better than the star. What does everyone think as far as preference?
  15. Hey, Here's a link to what I have done so far with explaining the startup banner colors. Editing the Startup Banners I will try to have more up soon explaining how to edit the tiles in Tile Layer Pro, and also how I totally started from scratch to make my own banners.
  16. I had posted this image in this forum before, just wanted to get it back up.
  17. Hey Red, That's pretty good that you've had a copy of the game since 94? I've went through several copies, and I still have my original somewhere. A couple of them have lost the ability to save records.. while some of them keep going strong. I wish I had a record of how many total games I've played. I think I have about 5-6 copies of the cartridge right now.
  18. I played this game recently.. and I have to say one of the funniest things is how good Kovalev is on the Rangers. Another funny thing is how bad the goalie gets stuck on the net when you do a wrap-around. And lets not forget about those silly check noises as well.
  19. Ah, come on.. it's the same amount of work as making all the current players on the teams Anyway, I will try to have that editing info up within the week. Maybe I'll get lucky and stumble on the crowd meter stuff.
  20. Just wanted to remind you when you sign up, don't forget to tell us what your favorite way to score in NHL94 is.
  21. Hey, I just wanted to let everyone know that I will be posting all of this information soon. Thanks to Swos filling me in on the last piece of info I needed, I have successfully changed the current startup banners so that none of the ones I use share important tiles (we use 20 teams). Below are some of the banners I've made (fake teams from our league). So sometime soon I will have the explaination of how to edit the startup banners/logos, and the "in-game" banners.
  22. Hey, I just wanted to mention that I recently got an A/V (audio/video) cable for my Sega Genesis/CD and the quality is much better than the RF connector. I connect my Sega right into my computer and the RF signal wasn't cutting it. I decided to try out the A/V connector knowing that it should be better, and that it is. No more static or fuzz on the screen and they are sold on Ebay in case you'd like to try it out yourself.
  23. I would also take Jeremy Roenick first. He's so dominant and can score from almost everywhere in the offensive zone.
