  1. On the list of classic (16-bit and earlier) games for which online leagues have formed, I would say that NHL '94 occupies the #2 slot on the list of most played. #1 would be Tecmo Super Bowl, which was played online in leagues since at least 2001, and probably earlier. I believe league play in NHL '94 started in 2005, although it's possible that the Fins started even earlier. Anyway, I'm not posting to pit the two games against each other. I'm wondering what the full list of classic games that have had online leagues/tournaments is. For purposes of this thread, I'm only counting competitions between players playing each other directly and simultaneously, so high score tournaments don't count (there have been tons of these for MAME games.) I'm aware of the following: Tecmo Super Bowl NHL '94 Baseball Stars (I or II or both, not sure) Sensible World of Soccer RBI Baseball Super Mario Bros. 3 (2-player versus mode, I swear it happened) I think there's been at least one Madden league, too. What other games have people played like this?
  2. My big issue is that in their blog post, they said, "One of the biggest topics that always seems to come up now and again is how good we were at NHL 94 back in the day." So they were all great back in the day but they have no desire to use manual goaltenders. Got it. NOW HERE IS MY REAL BEEF WITH THESCORE: About a year ago, I got an email from YouTube about my NHL '94 Crazy Comeback video. You know, the one that shows up first when you search for NHL '94 on YouTube? It turns out that TheScore had put in a copyright claim on my video. Of a video game that EA created. If EA had done so...they'd have a strong case. But TheScore? What a bunch of douches. I ignored the request for a response and got another email a couple of months ago saying that they'd withdrawn the claim.
  3. I think the biggest argument in favor of the cross-crease is that even if you were the only non-goalie on the ice and you had the puck in that position, you wouldn't really have a viable way of scoring from there otherwise. In fact, if you were alone on the ice it would be even worse cuz there would be no one-timer opportunity. In reality, being open with the puck to the side of the goal is a rather dangerous proposition for the defense, but not in '94 without the cross-crease.
  4. I invented the move where you set up for the cross-crease, wait for your opponent to take control of the goalie, and then stop and flip the puck into the now-unguarded near side of the goal instead. INVENTED DO YOU HEAR ME???
  5. swos, help me out here...who invented the 2v2 ROM? The whole idea of a 2v2 league arose out of the postmortem of my NHL '94 Cup Chase. Was it Mahavishnu who invented it? That seems like exactly the sort of thing he'd do. Also, is nhlgamer.com gone for good or just moved?
  6. Oh, believe me, we have one of those. They call it the Miracle Blanket and you use it to make a baby burrito.
  7. Thanks, guys! And whoa, what? Was that kgman saying something nice? Unbelievable! Kids + NHL '94 don't mix, though. It's hard to set aside even a 10-minute block of time for a single game cuz you never know when he's going to get fussy.
  8. I thought the most important rule in any online league is to have a good attitude and have fun.
  9. His name is Andrew (Drew for short) and he was born on December 1st, 2011. Pic attached. He's the little baby, and I am the large man. Yeah, I've been a little occupied. Also, he was born at 4:53 AM and I'd been up all night. Happy New Year!
  10. Why is this topic up for debate? kgman is the best NHL '94 player in the world. I know this because I asked him once.
  11. High five to smozoma for his excellent taste in NHL '94 videos.
  12. I'm a little late on this one, Evan, but thanks!
  13. Wasn't there like some thread a few years ago where someone else new came along and was talking about some service that would connect emulators and people generally denigrated the thing because we're like that?

    Hi

Video or AJ's comeback didn't happen. No, it's not that I don't think that a draft league can be successful, it's just that I personally don't enjoy the drafting process i.e. having to do the research and think hard about which players I want to draft. I'd rather just set a lineup and play.

    Hi

Well, I'm a filthy liar...but I've got the first hit on YouTube when you search for NHL '94, so there.
  16. Does anyone have the URL of the guy's site? He pulled down his video and I can't remember what his site is.
  17. I bet kgman has to stack phone books up on his chair in order to reach the keyboard.
  18. No, not really. I'd just had the idea of writing stuff like this down a while ago, and I just felt like doing it yesterday afternoon when I was bored. Well, ok, there was one quick instant replay that reminded me of all of this, I guess.
  19. Oh, believe me, sarcdoc was still trying. Otherwise I would have had 22. And I found Capitalism interesting. Definitely a bit of a different beast with the enhanced speed, but at least you couldn't complain that your team sucks.
  20. What's your record for most goals scored against another human being in an online game? Let's stick with 5-minute periods (which is standard for North American leagues. The Fins prefer 7 minutes. ) On the SNES side, the records page on halifax's old SNES Juiced League website says that I scored 18 in a game and 14 in another, and the March 2008 schedule has me (PHI) beating pondhcky (MTL) 18-4. I do remember scoring 18, though I don't really remember other details of that game. On the Genesis side, the best I can think of is the 16 I put up in the Capitalism league against sarcdoc. I made a YouTube video out of it. I don't think I ever put 17 or more up against a human.
  21. This is a brief guide to NHL '94 online etiquette. These guidelines are intended to minimize hard feelings and anger because players aren't able to talk to each other during the game. PREGAME Player 1 (the host) typically takes responsibility for adjusting the settings (time, penalties, players, etc.) Player 2 can also do this but Player 2 should hesitate just a moment before doing so to give Player 1 a chance to take charge. The player who handles the settings should choose his team first and then move the cursor to his opponent's team. If you want to use the default team (that is, the team your team selector starts on), just move off and back onto the team so that your opponent knows that you've made a decision and aren't just being lazy. Hesitate a moment at the matchups screen instead of just pressing start. Some guys like to run through the list and see who's hot and cold on their team. Player 1 typically sets his lines/goalie first at the pregame menu, but the important thing is for both players to get a chance, so wait a moment before hitting Start. DURING THE GAME If you started the game by mistake before your opponent could set his lines (and you'll know this because he'll pause at the opening faceoff and make the changes), the right thing is to force a quick faceoff if possible, preferably in his end of the ice. Neither player should try to score immediately off the faceoff if it was forced to allow the line change (because if a guy gives up the puck to force a faceoff, he'll be steamed if his opponent scores right off the faceoff.) Just take the puck out of the attacking zone to make things fair. If you want to view a replay of a goal, wait several seconds after the goal before going to the menu. This way, you don't have to sit through 10 seconds of replay and you'll get back to the action sooner. If you want to view a replay during the action, try and wait until a moment when you wouldn't disadvantage your opponent. That is, wait for a lull in the action where the puck isn't in danger and a scoring chance isn't imminent. Preferably, wait until you have the puck, though this is not always possible. IT IS EXTREMELY RUDE TO PAUSE THE GAME DURING AN OPPONENT'S RUSH OR WHEN HE HAS THE PUCK IN YOUR ZONE. Avoid excessive replays. Everyone hits the post five times in a game sometimes, and everyone gets screwed by cheap goals on occasion. On a similar note, everyone gets phone calls sometimes and has to pause the game. Try and use the same guidelines as pausing for a replay. Try to contact your opponent in the kaillera chat or in AIM to tell him you've got a phone call. And try and be understanding when someone does it to you. If you are whistled for a penalty, try and take control of that player after the whistle and skate him over to the penalty box to save time. We've all had fun by skating as far away from the penalty box as possible, but that should be old by now. If you are getting the power play, don't knock down the player who committed the penalty after the whistle if you can help it. BETWEEN PERIODS Wait a moment before hitting start in case your opponent wants to change his lines or look at the stats. The most common reason for a guy to change lines between periods would be if he changed his lines after an injury that lasted for the period. If you want to do these things, be quick about them. AFTER THE GAME Say your GG and wait a moment because some guys want to look at the scoring/penalty summary or the stats.

    Hi

Interesting...though I was never a fan of drafts, so I don't think I'd want to join a league that has one. Thanks for suggesting, though.

    Hi

Interesting...who thought Outline View was a good idea??? I'll also note that the full Genesis ZIP package on nhl94online.com is missing the actual gens.exe file. RR: How was your experience playing in their leagues? I always enjoyed it if only for the cultural aspect, though the ping was a pain. Yeah, hit me up if you see me online for a game. I might say no, but I might say yes.

    Hi

Hi. I'm Tickenest. You may remember me from such online NHL '94 leagues as NHL '94 Classic Leagues I-V, the SNES NHL '94 Juiced League, both Capitalism Leagues, and I'm also the only North American to play in Finnish NHL '94 leagues. I stopped playing about a year and a half ago, but I think I'll start playing again. Hit me up on AIM (I'll be on it more frequently these days) if you're interested. Also, older guys, I haven't been following developments since I left. Anything I should be aware of since I left?
