Updated May 10, 2012: Updates: Updated results through Spring'12 Classic New charts showing team ranks by each classic season New Overall Team Ratings Individual Player Ratings (top 200) Appendix Reformatted using forum code (no MS Word) NHL'94 Rankings - A Statistical Look A little while back I was reading this thread about an ongoing ladder league and I was intrigued by the idea of including the team rank in determining how much a win was “worth”. Meaning, a win using Edmonton vs. Detroit would mean more than a win using Chicago vs. Ottawa. I wanted to come up with some empirical evidence to support the "what is the best team" discussions that come up from t…

There have been many rankings done for tournaments where we group teams into tiers, but something always felt off. It was either too many tiers, not enough tiers, or the personal preferences around which teams on the fringe make it or not into a particular tier. I am trying an updated method that doesn't group teams into tiers so rigidly, but rather offers a scale based on team. Here's my first pass: The idea is that you find a team and then a reasonable matchup will be any other team that shares the color tier. UPDATE V02 AS OF 04/09/19 You can also assume the top teams in a band are stronger than the bottom. So St. Louis vs New York Islanders,…

Tried to use search for answer, but had no luck. What is correct method to calculate team rating to display during Ron Barr speech? Is it average of all players in roster, or only players in Lines, or even startup Line?

Play SNES. First time posting. 1. Just noticed that ken b on toronto is considered a forward but with lines on is on scoring 1 line as a right defenseman. Anybody else have similar bug? 2. This allowed me to play him both on offense and defense at same time. 3. He had a 38 speed and was skating well. Noticed another player had 38 speed as well so put him in too (Mike Foligno). All 3 sprites were flying around way faster than they should have even under "hot" condition. This seems to strongly confirm the 38 speed bug l've heard about.

In preparation of starting a line changes league, here's some proposed team rankings to help guide the drafting process. I'm excluding the bottom 5 expansion teams from this list (ANA, FLA, OTT, SJS, TBL) because they can barely ice one good line. So for the remaining 21 teams I will rank them based on my own opinion of who I'd prefer to play with. You'll notice throughout this topic, I will reference the recent SDL draft history to see how many of these players are included. You'll also notice that I will completely ignore goaltenders in my analysis, I'm only looking at the top 9 F and top 6 D because all SNES goalies suck anyways. All proposed lineups are just off the t…

Following the viral craze that was my SNES defensemen rankings, I needed a worthy follow-up. So here it is, a comprehensive list of forward line rankings for SNES! I haven’t considered the quality of a team’s offensive defensemen in this ranking. This is based on Classic League rules (i.e. penalties on, no line changes), so I have not put a lot of value on the quality of players outside of the top 3 or 4 forwards per team. 1. Boston Bruins - Best line: Oates - Neely - Rucizka It’s no secret that Cam Neely is a top ten forward in the game, and Oates is probably top 15. It could be argued that Neely is the best power forward in the game, although Lemi…

We all have seen some basic matchups that people tend to default and use.... Chicago v Rangers, Boston v Pittsburgh, Philadelphia v St. Louis These teams all have strengths and weaknesses. Does anyone have an out there matchup that they like using? Or what do you look for in picking a matchup? Fast defensemen? Heavy forward lines?

I try to mix things up quite a bit so I get to play with different matchups. One strategy is to use some of the old GDL ROMs and select random matchups. That way I get a good mix of players all the time. In doing so, I have noticed there are a few players that i just can't quite use properly, no matter who their line mates are. I realize that most of this is due to the weight bug, but there are other similar players that don't give me the same grief. Players ranked higher than 70 overall that are tough for me to use: Steve Larmer, Cam Neely, Jaromir Jagr, Kevin Stevens, Craig Janney, Stephane Richer, Mike Ricci, Glenn Anderson, Nikolai Borshevsky …

I don’t think anyone has made a comprehensive list of defensive rankings for SNES, so here it is. The definitive list! This is not about team defence. This is about defensemen only; I have not considered forwards or goaltenders. This is based on Classic League rules (i.e. penalties on, no line changes), so depth of defence has very little weighting here. There is also some bias here as I tend to prioritize size and mobility over shooting and passing, when it comes to defensemen. I will begin with the bottom 6 and periodically release the rest of the list in groups of 5, by updating this post. Let me know your thoughts below. Boston (9.5/10) - Bourque is …

Does anyone have any idea why some players never seem to reach the top of what their attributes allow? For example, Doug Gilmour is a "4" speed, and a 4 4 shooter. I've been noticing that he always seems to be at the bottom end of the range that a "4" could allow. Does anyone else see this happen?

Coming this week! We took the EA Sports Overall Player ratings to seed NHL'94 players into our own March Madness style bracket! Players will be bracketed in 4 divisions, Adams, Norris, Patrick and Smythe. The game will be simple, vote for which player you would choose on your NHL'94 team! Winners advance to the next round. We will be releasing voting polls here, and on our Facebook and Twitter accounts. I realize which system you use will be a huge factor, but this is meant to be a fun gimmick to do during the March Madness basketball tournament, and not a serious exercise to overthink. Just vote on who you would prefer!

I decided to take a stab at ranking the top 25 forwards, in a gdl/classic world. It seemed like an easy task, but I honestly ended up thinking about this for like 2 hours lol. It is harrrrrrd to decide who's better when two players are similar, but even harder when it's two players who are equally good in differing ways. I basically weigh Weight, Agility, Speed, Shot Power, Shot Accuracy, Stickhandling, and Passing far more heavily than all the other attributes. When it comes to forwards these are the attributes that I think truly matter. I understand that most people won't want to put their own top 25. Out of fear of people using it against them in future gdl's or somet…
