    @seamor

    Nice job!

This is a rom that I have often thought about making, of course mine would have ended with the 1994 Rangers when the NHL cease to exist in my mind.

Here is some feedback, from my perspective.

I really didn't look at anything after the 94 Rangers.

Amazing Center Ice logos with the Stanley Cup included for Cup Winners and Historically accurate logos, especially 51 Leafs and 52 Wings.

Sponsor logo leaves something to be desired.

1930 Bruins? why not 1929 when they won the Cup?  Better Regular Season?  They also look like they are helmetless which is really cool.

51 Leafs Many numbers are wrong check my 1951 rom for accurate numbers.  Ted Kennedy and Billy Bariliko should be starting.

52 Wings Production Line is wrong.  Abel at Center and Teddy at LW.

Pave, Skov, and Leswick should be checking line.  Best ever.

56 Habs Bert Olmstead should be line 1 LW.  Kent Mosdell should be Line 2 center.

67 Hawks?  why not 61 again I'm guessing Regular Season.  Doug Mohns was a forward at this point of his career not a Dman.

Tried to stay away from ratings but Bobby Hull 55 Shot Power and 80 Speed???

72 B's Orr played Right D and was partnered with Dallas Smith.

Line 1 Espo, Hodge, and Cashman.

I think I also have some better player cards you could steal from my roms for these teams.

80 Sabres??  Why not 75?  French Connection Lost in Finals.

    No 60's Leafs Teams?

I hate the modern ice but what are you gonna do about that.

    Overall incredibly good work.

Thanks! I’ll definitely make some adjustments for a v1.2, no reason not to have it be a living breathing thing. And for the team choices, a good amount of it was driven by regular season since as a Lightning fan, that’s all I had to cling to after 2019 :).

Balancing also also a big part of team choices, so unless it was the absolute only way to fit in a team (see ‘84 Nordiques, ‘06 Ottawa, ‘07 Sharks), I avoided doubling up on years as much as I could, which (along with the aforementioned strong regular season) is why I went with the ‘80 Sabres over ‘75, which already had Philly.

I’ll definitely make some changes to the lines/positions using your feedback, I tried to match-up TOI data for the modern players, but I was really left at the mercy of hockey-reference for the older teams, so it’s nice to have a proofreader of sorts!

I’ll have to bump Hull’s shot and skating for sure, I really didn’t know they were that low.

For the sponsor logo, it’s just a personal easter egg. I may change it, since obviously it doesn’t translate to a crowd outside of myself and a few close friends :).

I have Zoom Meetings all day tomorrow, so I don’t see why I can’t have a v1.2 out by tomorrow night!

    NHL 94 Champion Edition v1.2.bin

    v.1.1 posted 11/30/20, removed 12/1/20, 21 downloads.

v1.0 posted 11/30/20, removed same day, 11 downloads.

    Features

    • 32 Teams, representing some of the best eras of each franchise. Every franchise except for CBJ, FLA, NSH, VGK (and technically WPG/ATL I guess) appears at least once.
      • Not every team won a cup, but those who did received an overall boost, and special flair at center ice!
      • I tried to limit it to one team per era, so while yes, the Oilers probably have 3 of the Top 10 teams ever from their run in the 80s, I only put in the 1984 Oilers since their core was the same for the most part. On the contrary, the '02 Red Wings and '08 Red Wings are both in to reflect the change from Yzerman-Fedorov to Datsyuk-Zetterberg.
      • Most teams have 3 full lines, a sub, and 2 goalies. All lines are "best case scenario", just because of the limited information on older teams, I made everything the same or at the least, very close for each team as to make 1v1 play balanced.
      • No helmets? No problem! All teams from 1977 and earlier grace the ice with majestic flow!
      • To accommodate for the play styles of ole, and the endless possibilities on the ice, there's no more position locks. Forwards can play defense, and vice versa.
    • Doc Emrick takes one last gig at the legendary EASN before retiring!
    • Player cards for all starters and updated music for each team.

    Thank Yous

    Known Bugs

    • The Sudden Death game style doesn't work in the playoffs, because of how the game treats OT compared to the Regular Season mode.
    • There were some compromises to "crash proof" the game.
      • I use the Winnipeg Freeze Bug fix that destroys the User Records, so player cards are broken.
    • Some of the logos get jacked up on the Ron Barr screen. I have no idea why. I'll try to have them a bit more smooth in my next project.
    • Some of the numbers are probably wrong. The NHL.com roster archive seems like it needs some work, but most stars and starters should be accurate.

  3. EDIT: @Sauce has shared a solution that was deep within the depths of another thread, also found by Smozoma, just below this post. It's much better, and doesn't double up on the player names. Basically, if you'd like to keep the player records, which already are broken for the most part in 32-team ROMs, use this one. If you'd rather the names only appear once, use his!

Let me just start this off by saying 99.99999% of the credit here goes to @smozoma. All I'm doing is sharing the code!

If you'd like to prevent the freeze on Team 31 and 32, follow as so:

Find offset F8ABO, and change the ensuing set of 6 hex values to 4E 71, 4E 71, 4E 71. After this, find F8B2C, and do the exact same.

Once you boot up the game, the player card screen should act as so (also, a nice sneak peak of my big ROM I'm working on!):

The names will be doubled up, but I definitely view this as the lesser of 2 evils.

  4. So Roughness in NHL 94, as far as I know and most ROM hackers treat it, controls pass/shot bias. Lower = more passes (Adam Oates has 0), and higher = more shots (Mike Gartner has 5).

I have no idea about the aggression going over 6, I haven't seen it in the original game yet though.

I mean, kids that I know of. However, Maury keeps leaving me voice mails to be on the show,

Do it before Friday so you can namedrop the tournament. What's a lifetime of paycheck garnishment because of child support compared to the thrill of winning an even bigger tournament?

    Very impressed with your work.

I hope to see an Old Time Version of this.

Thanks! I'm hoping to do an old-time hockey version (or two) sooner than later, preferably one for each decade.

On the ice or on the roster?
Just trying to figure out if this is 2on2-Jam.

BTW, love the Trapper Keeper splash screen.

On the roster, still 2 on 2 like the last one. I used to put it in the title, but it read super clickbaity when I looked at it.

    NHL Jam 94 v1.0.bin

    Features

    • Fast-paced, arcade-stick friendly, 2 on 2 action!
    • Rosters based upon the 1993-94 NHL Season, with logos, uniforms, and player cards to reflect the era.
    • Take on the Eastern and Western Conference All-Stars, or decide who will achieve global domination by pitting the North American and European All-Stars against one another!
    • Just like NHL Jam 21 v1.4, the playoff mode is retooled to be more challenging, by working in the all-star teams.
    • Like in NBA Jam TE, each team has 4 active skaters (and a goalie).
    • The 0:00 Periods that take you straight to OT are in the game as the Sudden Death option in period length.
    • This game is 100% mostly crash proof in normal play, which I think is somewhat nice for a 32 team and 2 on 2 ROM. No need to rush around to choose teams, or skip over the match-up screen anymore, which is nice (especially when it goes on my arcade stand).
    • I tried to make the game feel arcadey, so the even-teams style from the normal 2 on 2 ROMs is out the window, and hot/cold is on. This also allows for handicapping if you're playing against someone worse than you (usually better than for me though :)), and also gives each team/player a fun identity.
    • Just like the original, I pumped this baby full of goofs, gags, and Easter eggs. Some are just silly player cards (which are a lot harder since there was no social media back then!), alternate logos, or graphics, but others may require a little bit of line editing to find...

    Required Thank Yous

    • @smozoma was a big help in hunting down a lot of the hex values that needed to be changed, and answered a lot of my questions along the way. SmozROM and EARE also are always a big help on a project like this!
    • @slapshot67 made the 32-team ROM base, which makes this possible in the first place.
    • @naples39 and @CoachMac's old school ROMs served as a great working base for attributes, since I never got to see a lot of these players live, let alone during this era.

    Known Bugs

    • The Sudden Death game style doesn't work in the playoffs, because of how the game treats OT compared to the Regular Season mode.
    • There were some compromises to crash proof the game.
      • The Player Cards screen on the in-game menu will crash the game. It has been changed to "DON'T OPEN", just to make sure it's avoided.
      • Names show up twice on the main menu, because of the way that the Winnipeg Freeze Bug had to be stopped. Couldn't get rid of one without getting rid of the other either. I know the Freeze Bug should be a non-issue in this ROM, but I wasn't taking any chances since it's going on my arcade stand.
      • Gary Thorne will not tell you who is hot or cold, since the game would sometimes try to pick player slots that didn't exist, crashing the game. The bonuses are still on, and you see them under the player image, just he won't tell you.

  9. v1.3 uploaded, this will be the final  penultimate update to this version. Removed one hidden player to avoid repetitiveness (similar to one already in the game, and one in the next ROM), and fixed Calgary's pants.

There will probably be a v2.0 at some point in the season.

Hey @seamorthis ROM looks/sounds f**king fun as s**t. Unfortunately (for me) I'm not really a gens player anymore and stick mostly to what i know, which these days is snes. So, uh, er, hmm, i guess my question is how many unique likes/subs/notifications do i need to round-up for your youtube channel in order to get you to f**k around and make a version of this for snes also? I'm only f**king around (for the most part), but just out of curiosity, do you mess around with snes ROMs ever also? Either way, nice work on this one. I'm looking forward to seeing it in action.

    DanK

I feel you, I was a SNES guy myself until I started hacking/playing online in draft leagues and such.

I thought about doing this on SNES because the sound/intro screen would've fit better on my arcade stand, but in all honesty, I just can't figure out how to hack it for the life of me, at least to the extent I am able to on Genesis. There's also no way to get things like 32 teams or custom logos as far as I know, which is a big turn off for me.

Happy to hear you like it though, I have another one coming out at some point this week!

  11. Hi all,

Small quality of life update released today.

You'll find preset line combinations and a few small graphical tweaks.

It's available via the top post in the thread.

Currently play testing the next ROM in the series...

  12. @UltraMagnus 2 on 2 as the default won't work in 95 for me, since it seems like it reads player cards differently than 94, so it crashes immediately on the start up screen. This might help, try finding a similar HEX sequence to ones I describe in here. I'm not familiar with 95's inner workings. but feel free to PM me here or on Discord if any questions arise!
