  1. In dmitry's old league, I found that most people could set up their lines in well under 30 seconds, so it actually wasn't too annoying (but it definately would have been nicer if it wasn't necessary at all). I'm thinking of making a line-changes-on league in the next few months (but with all the different GENS leagues about to start up.. maybe not). With NOSE, coaches' preferred lines could be hard-coded into the ROM before the season.
  2. I like line changes, but I find offsides slow things down way too much, since the AI and passing isn't good enough when it comes to staying on-side. Most people prefer to play with both off. There was a league a couple christmases ago that had both on; I found the offsides were just a huge pain, but the line changes were interesting.
  3. The thing is, the later rounds don't matter because we don't use line changes, so this is essentially a non-snaking draft order. I think it's better to non-snake only a few rounds. This changes the "average draft position" for the coaches less drastically. I would definitely snake the first two rounds, otherwise the 24th pick guy is getting really screwed. Everyone's top two players will be roughly equal (when combined), but the supporting cast will be stronger for the coaches with earlier draft positions. As for new coaches, we can play them a few times and gauge their skill level, then give them a draft pick according to that (though they could always tank those games.. but then they get hammered the next season when they finish better than they deserve). Also, are we having 25 teams next season? I liked 24 -- all the divisions and conferences had the same number of teams.
  4. :/ A hybrid draft order isn't supposed to be fair -- it's supposed to mildly favour the weaker coaches while still keeping things relatively fair for coaches around the same skill level. Snaking is (almost) completely fair. Fixed order is unfair in the name of fairness, but may be a little too unfair. I think a hybrid system is a simple compromise. We just need to decide how many rounds we want to invert. I think a snaking draft is bad for the league. We need to tilt things a little to help the less experienced/skilled coaches keep up, so they don't keep quitting on us. Parity keeps the league healthy. People are happy to play when they know they have at least a fighting chance every game. I think fixed order is a little too extreme, but I'd rather fixed order than snaking. When you play a friend on your console, you don't play with equal teams all the time.. you play with teams that will give the weaker player a chance, letting him improve without getting frustrated. Hybrid draft systems have also been linked to lower blood pressure and higher sperm count.
  5. I split my season series with Carse, therefore I should be declared his stand-in coach in his absence. Stanley Cup here I come!
  6. I'm confirming sebe82 here. He's pretty good. We had to go to OT, where Recchi got a breakaway to beat Roy for the 4-3 win.. Lag was bad, but I think it was my connection's fault. I always seem to get bad connections in the nhl 94 server...
  7. If I had to guess, you're probably using your forum password. The registration password is different than your forum password. There was an email sent out a couple weeks ago that should have the password. It's just random letters and numbers.
  8. Hi moose. Cool pic. Try replacing your picture with the one attached here. It'll download faster for people and not take up so much bandwidth for the site (yours is 1.6MB.. that's huge for something that's just going to get resized down to 20% of its full glory when shown on the site! This version downloads 7700% faster. Yes, that's 7 thousand percent )
  9. Rare is the rookie who does not believe he has skills. Rarer still is the rookie who actually has them. No offense meant -- I used to think I was awesome, but, in the online world, it turns out I'm just OK. Prepare to learn a lot from the veterans and become truly skilled!
  10. Cool, thanks for the playoff picture, DaDonch
  11. Hybrid 1. worst -> best 2. best -> worst 3. worst -> best 4. worst -> best 5. best -> worst 6. worst -> best 7. best -> worst 8. worst -> best 9. best -> worst 10. worst -> best 11. best -> worst 12. worst -> best Gives a slight advantage to the not-so-good players. -- As an added thought: I think snaking makes the draft go faster, since the picks near the start/end of the each round often go fast. Even if people vote for non-snaking, I think we should snake the last 5 or 6 rounds, since those players are only subs.
  12. Anyone is going to look amazing next to Scott Mellanby
  13. Yeah, it could be the emulator I'm using, never misses the sound. Who knows. However, it's way more likely that I'm just not noticing the lack of sound, or I'm too busy trash talking to hear it : P
  14. I think "Terraonline Server" or something like that is good. I found it worked well for both east-coasters and west-coasters, so I think it should be even better for places in between. ms=milliseconds. 34ms is good. It's about 1/30th of a second, which is faster than the framerate of movies you see in theatres (1/24s; 42ms per frame). I find it starts to get bad around 70+. You could be right about the xbox live / apples to oranges thing, but it could also have actually been choppy anyway (that happens sometimes.. both players have good pings (ms), but it's still choppy).
  15. Lindros is way too fat for me (fat = easy to check). His shot is definitely better than Recchi's, but he needs to be standing up to use it : ) Hm, I don't think I ever noticed that. Could just be an emulator-dependent thing..
  16. I use one-timers a lot, so having Recchi's strong shot at C works better for me. Actually, I had both Recchi and Eklund in the GDL season 2. I usually played Recchi at C, but whenever I was having a tough time against an opponent, I'd put Eklund at C since he was faster and a better checker. Recchi could then be used for slapshots (especially useful against weak goalies).
  17. I took a look at the stats in my offline stats-tracking league and found these guys as the top non-default-starter scorers: 18: Stephane Lebeau (MTL) 22gp 31g 11a 42pts (replace Muller) 32: Denis Savard (MTL) 22gp 8g 25a 33pts (replace Bellows or Damphouse. may have actually played ~18 games) 42: Evgeni Davydov (WPG) 22gp 15g 15a 30pts (replace Steen) 46: Glenn Anderson (TOR) 22gp 15g 14a 29pts (replace Andreychuk (fatty)) 49: Mark Lamb (OTW) 23gp 16g 13a 29pts (replace Kudelski) 51: Valeri Zelepukin (NJ) 22gp 14g 14a 28pts (replace .. i forget. the C) 54: Joe Mullen (PIT) 23gp 15g 13a 28pts (replace Stephens. may have actually played ~18 games) 55: Terry Yake (HFD) 22gp 17g 10a 27pts (Replace Cassels. may have actually played ~15 games) 62: Perry Berezan (SJ0 22gp 12g 13a 25pts (Replace Garpenlov. may have actually played ~18 games) 67: Kevin Dineen (PHI) 23gp 11g 13a 24pts (replace lindros or brindamour, move to wing) 72: Craig Simpson (EDM) 22gp 11g 10a 21pts (replace weight. may have actually played ~15 games. leads league with 44% shooting %) 87: Nelson Emerson (STL) 23gp 11g 7a 18pts (replace anyone) 94: Christan Ruuttu (CHI) 23gp 5g 12a 17pts (replace goulet! more like 20gp)
  18. Yeah, I just take out Lindros: C: Recchi RW/LW: Dineen or Eklund depending on handedness preference Killer. I don't know what it is about these guys, but they really shift the shots-per-game balance in your favour.
  19. Agreed. Gilmour is the poor man's Roenick, and you don't even want to know what Roenick does between when the puck is dropped and when it hits the ice (but in case you did, he leaves your dog on his @ss, impregnates your whole team, and kicks your mom in the hooha).
  20. In my offline stats-enabled league (me and a buddy play every few days, using all the original teams), Jagr is an assist machine. He's tied with Gretzky for 2nd, with 24 assists in 23 games. Jagr has one of the best shooting percentages (41.1%), too, but doesn't take many shots. First in assists is, somewhat surprisingly, Denis Savard (who is also perhaps the worst shooter in our league with a 14.5% shooting %)
  21. Post your instant messenger name(s) and people will contact you through there. Most people here use AIM http://www.aim.com/ .
  22. I think he means once you get the puck, you can't pass it; you can only shoot it. Once the computer gets the puck, you have to be the goalie until the goalie gets the puck. Then you pass it to one of your guys, and he's not allowed to pass it, only shoot.. then they get the puck and you have to be the goalie.. etc
  23. I still have a Genesis & NHL94 and a SNES & NHL95. In my fourth year of university, I broke out the Genesis in my residence suite, and many hours of fierce nhl94 competition ensued.
