  1. I'm interested in getting a test game going with a vet. Some of you from the OSL remember I had serious issues with kaillera or my router or something, and I had to drop out only having played 10% of my games. I'd like to find a way to remedy this, so hit me up on AIM (metzgerism) if you'd like to help, cause I want to play some Genesis too
  2. could play a best-of-four series vs. everyone instead. If you win the series (5 points or less), you get 4 points in the standings. If you tie the series, (4 points exactly) you get 2 points in the standings. If you lose the series, (3 points or less), you get 1 point in the standings. Of course the series could be over by game three...play a 1-2-1 format.
  3. Is the league setup (divisions, number of teams, number of games) absolutely static? I'd prefer to see a system where everyone plays everyone else an even number of games home and away - whether that be 2 or 4... Also, you may want to mull over my idea of playing series instead of just games - halifax, you know what I'm talking about - nothing as crazy as best of 7, but maybe best of 3 or 5 (depending on how many games you want to be the average). With an odd number of players we can assign home-ice advantage (or play like a 1-2-2 in a best-of-5). Or even, if you don't mind drawn series, four games - twice home, twice away - but obviously it only takes three games to finish up.
  4. Felt there was a good enough thread for this... You're seeing my ideas (tested and true) in the current capitalism league. Yes, I am in the lead. No, it is not good. Yes, it means that everyone has to play games. I was talking to halifax last night and mentioned to him an idea that I tried out for a different league over a year ago, but I've adapted it for NHL94: In the league phase, everyone plays a first-to-4-wins series against everyone else. Change home-away after every odd-numbered game, no overtime, ties are completely replayed (but count in your tiebreaker). For every series victory, you get 1 win. For every series defeat, you get 1 loss. Series wins are the main ranking criteria, series losses are secondary, and then "percentage" (2w+t)/(2w+2t+2l). Basically, instead of playing small games, you play a full marathon session - since playoffs are done in series, the regular season could (or should) exemplify this.
  5. Join the Capitalism league - you'll get your fill of training The link is in the forum under NHL94 leagues (or in my signature). Send me an AIM message (metzgerism) if you're still having problems...I've been trying to steer people away from zbattle btw - it does nothing if you know how to direct connect - so be aware of that. Otherwise, welcome to the community!
  6. With my play today as evidence, losing lots of games by 1 or 2 goals is more demoralizing than losing two or three by an insane margin.
  7. Not a tactic, more a strategy, and sometimes you see it in my play. I'll pass back occasionally on a drive, especially if I don't think I'll get a good scoring chance out of it. This can pull the defenders (the CPU guys) toward my own blue line and hopefully I can get a 2 on 1 chance off a pass.
  8. I do the same thing to push numbers in the defensive zone. If I lose a center ice faceoff, I push back the center - he automatically skates backwards.
  9. You guys could adopt the scoring system I'm implementing for Capitalism League, instead of dealing with having to enforce checkpoints.
  10. Yeah I'm just bored waiting for Capitalism League to start.
  11. HABS said he thinks that Scribe is in Minnesota and the others are in the West somewhere. By that logic, there are 8 "western" teams, which could make up two 4-team divisions or one 8-team division. The midwestern teams are a bit of a question because there would be three of them, as well as jamonica and swos. Once I know exactly where everyone is I can make a legitimate proposal, but I will try and make each division have at least some distance component so that everyone is subjected to it for fairness. Basically, in my proposal there won't be an all-Toronto division. 14. Can you guys list the locations of everyone here - I'll try and come up with something that works. And how the format has worked in the past, since I can't find anything on it here. It might be smaller, and uneven divisions, but I promise you it won't be too crazy...how many games in the season are we thinking?
  15. Alright, I just want to report that the all-99s rom is actually very good. I think some of these concerns that people have here are being answered: it's fast but not too fast, the goalies aren't getting beat on every shot, it's not a complete checkfest like SNES (at least not yet), and the game actually tends to mirror the real game a little more (dump-ins, crashing the net, a little bit of cycling). Maybe it's cause I'm not good at Gens yet, but I'm just not seeing it as a bad rom...I'll finish the teams and post it soon.
  16. Could do that... Maybe skinnies mediums and heavies? And call it NES Hockey 94?
  17. That's a pretty good idea. Any suggestions on settings? I tried out the game with everyone at 6 (99)...goalies weren't edited though so I'm going to try that soon. NOSE is so freaking great...
  18. I'm going to manually edit the rom to try 100% - I'd like to add a little flavor to it, however, instead of it being a hard-checking, hard-shooting, fast-skating version completely... My key here is even-teams, and having all the players be the same as their position is one way to do it. I know that AJ doesn't like that because a team has no character, but you have to remember that it's the coach's character that usually comes out more. Regardless, I'm going to try it out and we'll see how it works. I have a feeling that the forwards will get their checking, weight, etc dropped, and the defensemen will have lower shot accuracy...not sure what else (I don't want awareness to be less than 100 if I can, though).
  19. What I tend to do, and prefer, is make my changes and check defense, and let the other player start the game unless they made their changes. The issue comes when the other player doesn't slap at the faceoff before the drop. I don't tend to say GL because I feel that it's implied (and kinda silly because I'd like to play full-out, no-holds-barred). GG is far more important, but basically by rule I don't hold grudges - in fact I'm more worried about the emotions of the people I play than my own, because I'm kinda crazy, but I don't take anything that seriously. I know it sounds like I'm being a hypocrite, but I'm not - playing to win and playing for fun are not two philosophies that need to be divorced. We're here to have fun, d00dz! And win! EDIT: In my chess league we tend to say glhf134340 to signify a "real" match. It's a colloquialism.
  20. For SNES I don't think we have a problem...I've just had issues with Gens for some reason. Zbattle rarely works for me, and it's not even that good - it doesn't plow past the underlying issue for a lot of people, and that's firewalls and routers. Direct Connecting tends to be more accurate in regards to what you want done, but often times only a TCP connection is available. Hamachi has NEVER failed for me (and I've used it probably 150 times), and with just the basic knowledge of a direct connection, it's very user friendly...it takes about 5 minutes to understand, where port forwarding and this Z-net thing don't seem to do that. On another note, markyman had me download "fusion," a derivitave of Kega for the Genesis - VERY VERY SIMPLE DIRECT CONNECT. I'm wondering if this works with hamachi because if it does, you'll see me endorse it hands down. Sorry to be hamachifying everything, but when I found that damn thing I latched on - it made gaming 1,000 times easier.
  21. What if it was just even teams, then? It doesn't have to be 100 for every stat, but make all forwards be the same, all defensemen be the same, and all goalies be the same. Plus, we've seen in trialling the juiced rom with NoNo rules that the game is actually not that high scoring (9-8 OT was the worst so far, and that was an aberration).
  22. The SNES Juiced rom has turned out to be a positive, exciting variant on the standard NHL94 drudgery. Everyone has an even team, all stats are maxed, the game is incredibly fast, and it's beginning to unseat the old rom. Is there - or can someone make - a 100% stats (188 weight) rom for Genesis so that we can have juiced leagues as well? The biggest thing that bugs me is that the game is inherently unfair, and the SNES side of this community has been a lot more open to change (in terms of competitive balance - minus the draft league) than the Gens, therefore I have been a SNES guy. If someone makes this rom, the more teams the better.
  23. Capitalism league...Someone wants to Gens the 100% rom I'd be all for hosting that s**t.
