In what looked like a tighter series than the results indicate, the Calgary Flames survive the constant attacks of the Quebec Nordiques with a grinding defense, opportunistic offense... and a stroke of luck. Calgary held off the Nord on game 1 as Nieuwendyk, Roberts and Fluery started on the main line, but got embarrassed at home 9-4, making the coach a rather unhappy man. Still, Calgary fought on as they managed to keep some composure and persistent on their attack as they took both the Nordiques' home games and went back to Calgary to seal the deal.
In what seemed to be a good game for the Flames turned into a nailbiter as Quebec kept challenging the Flames in a game that saw the balances shift quickly and finally two miracles happened. Robert Reichel, filling in for Gary Roberts after he went down with an injury for the rest of the game, managed to get the goal that closed the distance by giving some hussle along with bruiser Joel Otto and Steve Ducshene accidentally nudged the puck into Hextall's goal as he tried to insure the Nord's victory!
Nieuwendyk came into the clutch no sooner overtime got started and scored the winning goal. The Flames go onwards to the 2nd round where the Kings await...
