  1. "Pure Sanderson" If a guy scores a one-timer goal on a pass that he shouldn't have been able to touch due to another player being in the way, this is pure Sanderson. The term comes from the god-like game Sanderson had in a league a friend and I made, scoring 6 goals. Sanderson one-timed a pass for a goal while being covered by THREE guys. He just stuck a stick through the crowd and slapped it in, and from quite a ways away from the net, too. The term can also be used when a player miraculously pulls in a pass despite being covered by a guy between him and the passer. "Lobster" (verb) When you check a guy and he falls on his face and slides to the north or south, he looks like a lobster, so he is "lobstering." His arms/gloves look like a lobster's claws. "Superman" (verb) When you check and guy into the boards and he flies out across the rink in the opposite direction, arms outstretched like Superman, this this is "Supermaning." "Instant Revenge" Sometimes, when you check a guy over, he gets up again almost immediately and can take "instant revenge" on the player who knocked him over.
  2. The SNES version just feels.. wrong. * The frame rate is pretty low, so the animations look off and delayed. * When you hit a guy, he doesn't get knocked down - he just falls over. It doesn't feel solid like a hit on the Sega. Someone said something about how on the SNES you can hit a guy and then fly back to centre ice. Well, in the Sega version, you can hit a guy, and HE flies back to centre ice. And much laughter is had by all as he supermans across the ice and hits another player, upon which event someone quips, "you know.. if yer stupid guy hadn't been in the way, he would have made it to the far boards." You fly back pretty far on the Sega once in a while, too, anyway. * No buzzer when the period ends. I keep wondering who got the damn penalty while I was on a breakaway. * Really obnoxious music. Seriously. Can't stand it. Sega music, much better. * The sound is just weak. Bad graphics in many games can be excused, but sound really adds to the immersion factor, and the SNES version just sounds bad. When you hit the post, it makes a dull THUD rather than the exciting Sega CLINK! The puck sounds like it's made of plastic when you receive a pass or when it's flipped into the air and lands on the ice. (Aside: I wonder if they engineer the nets in the NHL to make the most exciting sound possible when hit by the puck?) * When you crush a guy to put him out for the period or game, in the Sega version, you can really hear the crowd going "OOoooohh.. MAN that had to hurt!" While, on the SNES, it's more like, "Yeah, could I get some ketchup on my hotdog? Oh look, that poor chap fell over. Crumpets." -- On the SNES, I do however like how the players look really mangled after being hit into the boards. Still.. the hitting just doesn't have the same pop as on the Sega. SNES has better passing, too -- it does get annoying on the Sega when your guys fumble 7 passes in a row (I had a game recently where my passing was 2/21(9%) over the first 2 periods with Detroit). Overall, the SNES version gives me a 'plastic' feel, while the Sega version has a much smoother feel.
  3. Finally, cold hard proof! I can now silence the SNES version fans I know.
  4. I'm not sure if this can play .giz files, but it can make AVI movies: http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/forum/viewtopic.php?t=316
  5. Oh I do. But if the guy is Roenick, Gilmour, Fleury, Yzerman, etc? Sometimes I'll use the A button on them, since it doens't usually result in a penalty.. but at the same time, using the A button is essentially a penalty in spirit, so it's a cheap counter. The B button can knock them down, too, but it's also a penalty (tripping.. or roughing of the nads) in spirit. Overall, I just think it's a move that makes for a boring game. Yes, you can counter it by clogging the slot or using goalie control, but it's still cheap. The game turns into a trapfest, as you have to get back and clog clog clog! It's dull and I don't enjoy playing those guys. I lost like 20-30 games straight to Backhandfloater and tk11 but kept playing because they each play a fun, fast game. Haha.. good passing.. what the heck was I talking about.. my passing is typically 45% (though i went 2/21 (9%) over 2 periods recently with Detroit). I make a lot of risky passes. But that's fun. I put a pass through FOUR players a couple days ago -- it ticked off one guy's stick and bounced through the crowd over to a streaking Curtis Leschyshyn who slapped a one-timer in out of midair to win the game.. hilarious goal. But I was on the last save slot so couldn't save the replay
  6. I thought the wrap-around flaw was in NHL 93? In 94 (genesis), the cheap way to score is to skate straight across the net, just in front of the goalie -- the goalie goes down when you're about half-way across, then you can just lob it in the far side. Very very annoying and hard to counter if the guy is using someone like Roenick or Yzerman. Players who keep trying to set up the skate-across goal are sooooooo annoying to play against. Every rush is the same with them. I prefer a more wide-open game.. one-timers, dekes, good passing... Not just rushing into the corner, turning 90 degrees, and trying to skate across the front of the net with your toughest guy. When I get scored on, i'd rather it be because my opponent outplayed me, not because my guys just couldn't knock down his guy (Roenick, Yzerman..) doing a skate-across.
  7. Crowd Meter: The peak crowd meter level is stored in bytes 59276-59277 (E78C-E78D). However, for some unknown reason, about 20% of the games do not have a non-zero number stored at this location. I couldn't find the peak crowd level in these other games. Any ideas?
  8. Do you think this proposal is what made EA put '94 on the PS2 version of NHL06? If so.. we do have some sway with them! Good work Evan..
  9. Note: The byte count is actually a 16-bit value with the high byte stored at 59626(decimal) and the low byte at 59627. It maxes out at a value of 0x0168(hex) or 360(decimal), which is 60 goals (60=360/6). If more than 60 goals are scored in a game, the first 59 goals are recorded and the very last goal is recorded in the final position. For example, in a game with 74 total goals, 59626-59627 holds the value 360(dec), so 60 goals are recorded (60=360/6). The goals recorded are goals 1-59 and goal 74. Goal 74 is recorded in the 60th position. For the penalty summary, the value has a max of 0xF0(hex) = 240(decimal) = 60 penalties (60=240/4). It's a 16-bit value stored at 59988-59989, but it can be interpretted as an 8-bit value at 59989, since it never actually uses byte 59988. The scoring summary, however, can potentially use both bytes.
  10. I like how in 94, hitting a guy into the boards makes him get hit harder. If you time things correctly, you can catch a player too close to the boards .. and "WHAMO! Big mistake, sucker!" It's just one of those lovable '94 quirks! I wouldn't want him to be able to hold on to the puck. But it would be cool if they wobbled sometimes instead of always just falling down.
  11. Good stuff : ) One little note.. when you say 'opaque,' I think what you mean to say is 'semi-transparent.' 'Opaque' means you can't see through it. If they're going to redo the game for a new platform, I think they should go for four buttons instead of 3. The tough thing about redoing NHL94 is that a lot of what we love about the game are its quirks (that is, its bugs!). What are thoughts on goalie control? Is it good or bad that you have to hold down the B button for a while to take control? I kind of like it.. You have to plan ahead.. I think the *main* thing that turns me off all other hockey games is how easy it is to turn and control your player. In 94, you have to really have the 'feel' of the game to get your guys to do what you want. You have to master things like the spin-stop. You need to carefully predict your opponent in order to check him or intercept his pass, because if you mess up, you're totally out of position.
  12. I believe this is what you're looking for: http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/forum/viewtopic.php?t=316
  13. My votes are for Yake and MacIver. I taunt my friends while trying to go end-to-end whenever MacIver gets the puck. "Heeere comes MacIver!"
  14. The worst starting player is Scott Mellanby on Florida. His speed varies from 32-39, and there isn't really anyone better to replace him with. I was playing a friend once, and Mellanby picked up a loose puck past the red line for a breakaway.. I exclaimed, "NOoooooOOooo!!!" because I thought he'd have a good breakaway chance and I'd have no chance of catching him.. but after a couple seconds, I realized that this was THE SLOWEST player I'd ever seen.. so I got a guy to come back and take him out. Before he even reached the blue line. It was like that moment in Austin Powers with the steam roller.. "NNOoooOOOOoo.............oOOo!!"
  15. Yeah, I like being shorthanded, too (when playing the computer, anyway -- against real people, it can be tough being shorthanded)
  16. Mark Lamb is key with Ottawa . Him and Baker are killer together. Keep Turgeon on for some speed, and bench Kudelski!. that's the most horrible 'wink' smiley i've ever seen. He looks like something *very* uncomfortable is happening to him.
  17. I like the tough goalies. I'm in the 30-team stats league, and games were usually pretty close. I don't think I scored more than 5 goals in any game, and I had a 34-9-4 record. I won a lot of games by just one or two goals with my goalie saving my butt in the last minute with miracle saves on one-timers. I think the original ROM had low goalies so that bad players could still play the game without being frustrated, since it's very hard to score until you learn some moves.. and it's hard to learn the moves if you aren't scoring : P For experienced players, better and more balanced goalies are needed to keep things close. I can understand that there aren't really any guys deserving 6 in skating, especially with there being no all star skills competition this year to set a couple guys apart from the pack (still, no one these days inspires the fear guys like Bure used to). I'd still like to see a couple guys in the 90s overall, though.. Jagr and Thornton blew the rest of the league out of the water in points this year (too bad Forsberg wasn't healthy). One of the things that made 94 so great, I think, was that the great players felt .. great! : ) In newer games, the players all feel pretty much the same (nhl2006 on the xbox just bores me). It's nice for some of them to have some personality. I like that the players are closely balanced in the ROM, but having a couple superstars is fun. Either way, this is a great pair of ROMs, and I can't wait for the new ROM and the next season of the stats league.. actually.. Roloson is earning his 98 rating so far in the playoffs Who'd have expected EDM to be up 2-1
  18. A few minutes times 30*41=1230 games.. At just one minute per game, that's still 20.5 hours
  19. A friend of mine did this to me a couple nights ago. We were playing 2-on-1 (2 friends against me) with ASW-vs-ASW. I got a fluke goal with 7 seconds left in the third to apparently win it 5-4. My friends switched controllers, making the better player the centreman. I said, "It's impossible." I just tried to check him off the faceoff, but I bounced off his centreman (Roenick) and checked down my other friend's player. The first friend went in and scored on a deke. 0:00 left. Outrageous. I won in OT, though . Too bad.. they deserved the win with that goal.
  20. There are some great players online. I never thought I was THE BEST (I'd only played 3 or 4 people before playing online), but I thought I was up there. I was doing well in the oNHL94 stats league, but now I'm getting crushed in nhl94.net! Even if you are "the best" when you arrive on the online scene (unlikely), once you play some people, they will learn some of your techniques and you may find that the next time you play them, they can beat you. There are just so many techniques you can pick up from different people.
  21. Thanks for making these ROMs. Some thoughts on a few things: Goalies: * Roloson: I do think he's one of the better goalies in the league and had a ~.930 save% over the previous two seasons, but he has a higher rating than Kiprosoff and Luongo, which isn't right. He lost the number 1 position to Fernandez this year. * Legace and Osgood having the same rating. Legace's stats have been significantly better this year. * Cloutier seems a bit overrated, and Auld a bit underrated. Ottawa: * Meszaros led the league in +/- for almost the entire season, which I think warrants a DefAw better than 2. * Chara has a 100+MPH shot, but has only a 4 Shot Power rating. * Fisher is a very aggressive player, one of those guys you can tell is always working his hardest. He's really exciting to watch, actually. His 0 in fighting is way too low, too (though fighting doesn't matter in '94..). Elite Players: * There are no skaters with an overal rating over 90. Is there a reason for this? Forsberg 88, Jagr 84, Thornton 82... I'd like to see some 90+ guys. * Why does no one get a 6 speed? I don't know who I'd give it to, but I think a few players should have it. Checking: * Since checking in NHL94 is actually determined largely by the weight of the players, maybe the weight stat should be used to indicate their hitting and not their actual weight. Chara is a weakling in the ROM due to his weight. When Kariya can take out Chara with ease.. something is wrong. : ) Chara should be a joy to have on D, but he's useless due to his inability to hit.
  22. Alright, thanks, I found it : ) For reference, the values start at hex address FE18E.
  23. Thanks for the replies. I'll have to try later (just about to leave..).
