    1. Name, age, occupation, location, system
Thomas Solarik, 39, Corporate Sales (Hillenbrand Inc.), Toronto, Genesis and at times SNES(TSB3/Super Mario/Legend of Zelda)

    2. What hobbies or other interests do you have?
Custom roms on as many platforms as I can hack. Writer (4 books published), Hiking, and anything Google Sheets related

    3. When did you get introduced to the game NHL'94?  How did it happen?
About when I was 12 or 13, my parents  (my dad), bought my brother and I a genesis with 3 games (Sonic, World Series and NHL94, a year bought 95). The love for hockey was already there and 94 brought me and my brother a lot of joy and fights. I can still remember scoring the first goal off the back of the glass hit the goalie and going in. Montreal v Chicago.

    4. When did you get introduced to nhl94.com and the online community? Were you playing between these two dates?  (That is, between first becoming aware of game, and first becoming aware of nhl94.com.)
Started looking for updated rosters for football games and came across this site and wanted to see what it was all about. But, took over 20 years between the last time I played 94/95 to first playing online NHL94. First league, was the CDL C League this past year. Then developed with a few fine folks @kingraphand @segathon the WN95HL online league for NHL95.
    5. What are a couple things that you love about the game?
1x Goals....my favorite part and obviously the fact as fun as it is today as back when 12 year old Thomas was playing, the true genius of the game and how simple but complex it is.

    6. Are you a gamer in general? What other games do you play?
A lone gamer before this site came along. Mostly, Old retro games have always been my jam. The XBOX OG is the last system, modern system I played.

    7. Do you follow hockey in real life? Any other sports?
Montreal Canadiens/Winnipeg Jets fan both from the early 80s until now. NFL (played University Football myself) a huge 49ers fan.

    8. If you have been to a live tourney, what was it like meeting the real people behind the screen names? Any big surprises?
      Never been.

    9. What is behind your screen name? (Origin story, if there is one.)
UltraMagnus...Growing up in the 80s everyone knew or heard of Transformers. Everyone loved Optimus Prime, but seem like he got his ass kicked alot of the time...Similar to Arnold Schwarzenegger movies. But always won in the end. I just was drawn more to Ultra Magnus, his General and closest friend (viewed as a potential replacement for him for the matrix of leadership). Never to the focal point, but always there to service and jump in when needed, as well as loyal.

    10. Favorite NHL94 player in game (and why)?
      Selanne...Jets...fast....and favorite player growing up.

you wrote books!  wow what kinds?

This was something I thought about, and it is why I removed the eyes, [to better match the SNK plain face style]
But the downside is that EA only made the one player model, unlike the different batting stances, or gender options, you can find in the SNK games.
And going by how much time and effort the guys that have done the helmet colour mods put in, and how the sprites are arranged already, it seems like it would be a lot of work for what quite possibly would only be a slight change in the art style.

Yeah it would be cool to have different player models.  You did that box art so well, I spent some time daydreaming of a true Hockey Stars port.  I guess if I had a magic wand, the Hockey Stars would probably look like jumbo versions of NES Ice Hockey Players but with the Baseball stars art.  So many little tweaks you could do like having the goalie get the "sweating" animation like the pitchers get in baseball when tired.  The guys going over the boards, would be similar to grabbing a home run.  Probably would do fighting much more like blades of steal look.

  3. @UltraMagnusstarted an NHL 95 Online League this year and it is the best thing on the internet.

we went from a league with half the guys didn’t know how to score into a very competitive league.

Beginning of season people were just doing cross creases and one timers but this Game below is so fast paced and frantic because the defense has gotten so good.

This was the semi finals with NHL 94 GOD @kingraphagainst the reigning Segathon Champion who swept Kingraph in season series

  4. Great vid break down on all the additions to NHL 95.  I know there are some 94 guys here that have a lot of hate towards this game but it is pretty crazy what they added way back in the 90s.  Franchise mode that you can play as every team, create a player, trades, 2 on 2 mode, end of season awards.  Yeah its different from 94 and that's ok.  Both can be fun games to play.  All the EA games from the 16 bit era are fun.

  5. @UltraMagnus Keeping 95 Alive!

I'd be down for sure.  Tried to Commish a League when Pandemic hit but didn't have enough free time to do full commish duties.  But I'd be great help as a high ranking board member for this league.

There are some issues with 95 online.  95 has Been plagued with desyncs through the years.  @kingraphand I got it to work, but took a few times and I bet there are more desyncs hiding in the weeds when others start playing.  I think we may need @UltraMagnusbig brain to do a ROM that may cause less desyncs.

The other hurdle I encountered most of the 95 Aficionados have lost a lot of brain cells drinking beer and don't have many left to figure out online play.   All the Segathon League Roster would want to play but only a few are capable of figuring it out online like @TecmoJon Tecmo Kris. LOL

I made a 95 Segathon Discord and others around the world who wanted to play expressed interest. https://discord.gg/x3qs8D9  I bet we could get some of them onboard but lets work the bugs out first.

  6. Have to give shout out and heart felt thanks to @UltraMagnus

Over this last year he has created a custom NHL 95 ROM for our Segathon Tournament and celebrating the life of my Friend Nate who was the greatest NHL 95 in our group and most likely the world.  He passed away last labor day and last Friday I was finally able to unveil this masterpiece to Nate's friends and Brother.  Everyone was so impressed.

Here are a few screen shots of what @UltraMagnusdid

He put Nate as the Scouting Report person did 6 custom teams for us.

He also put Easter Eggs all over.  For instance at Center Ice in MTL, there is a hole as the logo.  All the Arenas has special names and Nate had colorful language in the scouting report.

Everyone was so impressed by it.   Here's the Twtich Feed of the event if you want to see some action.  Best part was we did 6 Man teams with line changes.  Every time you change lines you have to hand the controller to the person behind you.

Go about 3 hour 35 minute mark for the doubles.

  7. Here's talk about the Genesis bug.  Sounds like SNES version is superior for this reason below

    Quote

NBA Jam TE Genesis is much better but the injury game is the meta game within the game. The fact the injuries DO NOT reset quarter to quarter even if you change players and it says 0 the next quarter hurts the gameplay. It's essentially about who can shove the other guy more rather than who can score more points (until the other team can no longer move and you just score over and over again)

Sounds great. I'll see what I can do with digging into it. Might branch off into a NCAA version.

Cool, there is an NCAA version of Jam called College Jam I think.  Pretty sure you can do alley oops if I remember right.
