  1. Hey kgman, Just wanted to schedule the rest of our finals games. I should available most of the day and nights the next few days (one thing finals period is good for!). Either way, we MUST finish on/by thursday night, because I go out of town on friday afternoon, and chances are my internet connection will be terrible for 2 weeks. So let's do this!
  2. I didn't vote in other thread because honestly I don't have a clue who to pick for most awards. As far as goalie control goes though, KG wins by a landslide.
  3. I think the 07 rom is pretty close, but I still think what I said has some significant differences. -For one, the lowest rating starting goalie in that rom is Nittymaki at 82. That's awfully high and makes the overall range of goalie ratings extremely small. -Far more significantly, there are only about 10 forwards on the 30 teams with an overall rating above 80. None reach 90. In the original rom, there are 7 players at 90 or higher, and about 25 above 80 (and that is with 4 fewer teams). Clearly the makers have made a conscious decision to tone down offense, while the whole point of my rom idea is to maintain the original gameplay. -Third, the weight issue has not been corrected. And for the record, I think reversing the weights AND having high checking stats over-corrects the problem and makes certain player too good at hitting. Which raises the question again, am I the only one who cares about these factors?
  4. I have been considering working on a nhl 94-07 rom, but before I started I wanted to get some opinions about it. This is mainly because playing the game one player blows, so it's only worth the time if other people would want to play this rom too. My general theory is to maintain the gameplay of the original 94, but with a few caveats. Here are my philosophies -Keep skater ratings roughly the same as 94, maintaining spread between first line talent and scrubs. This also means various eccentricities, such as the fact that 90% of dmen in 94 have shot accuracy of 2 or lower, or that a 5-5 shot should be exceedingly rare. Either way, the goal here is to be authentic to the original rom. -Equalize player weights. No longer will being super light make the player a monster on the ice. Hitting will depend on checking rating, and ability to stand up to hit on agility. -Shrink goalie ratings range. Maybe this is just my opinion, but I think the current state of the real NHL should be reflected here, which is that goaltending is at an all time high. In the original rom, there are 2 goalies in the 90s, 1 in 80s, a few high 70s, several lows 70s, then the rest trickle on down in 40s to 60s. I think in a new rom, there should be a select few of 90s, a number of 80s, and your average nhl goalie will be somewhere in the 70s. Only real crappy goalies will be in 60s. Not sure if anyone warrants a 50s rating. -Teams will be more balanced. Now I'm not saying they should be artificially balanced to make all teams the same, but again reflecting the current state of the NHL, there shouldn't be nearly as big a difference between 06 buffalo and 06 phoenix as there is between 94 chicago and 94 florida. There are no expansion teams now, and the vast majority of teams should be between 68-73 overall. So, what do people think? Personally I'd love to play a league on such a rom, but one player leagues don't work too well. If I were to start this project, help (particularly with graphics) would be welcome too.
  5. I believe you are looking at frame skip, not frame rate. Auto-frameskip locks the frame rate at 60, which is how it worked on an original US Genesis. Putting frameskip to 0 just means the emulator will just run the game as fast as possible. As far as I know, there is no way to manually set the frame rate via Gens. I believe this can be modified in hex though. Wboy had a 94 rom that ran faster than usual. You'll have to ask him about it.
  6. Sega CD is generally considered identical to the Genesis version except with better sound, and a slightly smoother framerate. The one big plus of Sega CD however is that you can burn it to a disc and actually play your updated rom on a real Sega Genesis/CD setup.
  7. Not sure I have time or not, and I'm not all that crazy about artificially balanced teams, but a league with stats sound funs. I particularly like option 3 of a 07 rom with reversed weights. On the same tip, an alternative idea is for all players to have the same weight, and just let checking and agility stats decide.
  8. Well I guess we just feel differently about it. This is the second season+playoffs I've played with the system and have never found it to be a pain at all. Again, I'm not gonna stand in the way if the powers that be want to make that change, I just never saw it as a significant issue.
  9. Is it really that much of a pain to log all the games individually? Takes like 5-10 seconds a game, and requires that games be logged in the proper order. I don't understand the problem. Even if you change it to winner logs, then you still have to do multiple entries if the series isn't a sweep. I guess it's not a problem if it's easy for the admins to do, I just don't see the big deal.
  10. This league should be for fun. It's not about who is the objective champion of the world, because even if everyone has same team, the winner of the playoffs would probably just come down to matchups more than gross skill. You could be best player in league given all circumstances, but one guy has your number and you lose in second round, when you know if you just didn't match up with him you'd beat everyone else. That's just the way it is, in both video games and real life. (Ask Ottawa about how they always got stuck playing Leafs, who owned them and would promptly get eliminated themselves after beating Ottawa) The regular season isn't pointless, it's the heart of the league. I have run through two playoffs, once getting swept in first round, and once losing in finals. Both seasons I had more fun with regular season because I simply enjoy getting in a bunch of games against a variety of opponents rather than simply playing the same guy over and over with the same teams. The first two seasons I didn't even put chicago on my team ballot, but after getting swept I got a little pissy and put chicago as my 3rd or 4th choice. I ended up with them, and now after every game I wonder if I won only because I have chicago. Trust me, it's no better than wondering if the only reason you lost is because the other guy had chicago or team x. Just try and enjoy it because no system is perfect. This website and even this league exist to create games and online community of players more than anything else. Not about proving who is best for one 3 month period on lagged internet games on a 12 year old game on a defunct system. At least that's my 2 cents...
  11. That Genesis release date is wrong. NHL games always come out in September/October. I remember 94 in particular because I was on a week-long 7th grade field trip when it was released, so I couldn't get the game until we got back from the trip. Longest field trip ever, in more ways than one...
  12. As I mentioned in other thread, prepare for 3 DNPs on my part. Couldn't track down Rob, and won't have access to games until Sunday night. Kind of a drag as Vocal and I are currently tied, each with 3 games left (with identical GAs and only 1 off on GSs)...
  13. Just as a heads-up, it's gonna be tight for me to finish by the deadline. I only have 3 games left, all against St Louis, but I haven't seen him on in ages. Additionally, after tonight I'll be out of town until Sunday night. Any leniency here? The top 3 seeds in the west probably won't be decided until the last game is played (Gens A).
  14. Shoulda figured I'd catch some crap for that one. I'm not guaranteeing anything, nor am I saying I'm the best player outside of kgman. Just saying that "if" I keep playing this well into the playoffs with my unfairly good team of "superheroes" a "potential" matchup with kgman would be fun. I don't see how that's disrespectful to anyone. But hey, if it fires people up and makes the league more exciting, so be it. My playoff performance this year couldn't be any worse than my last go around...
  15. I understand the frustration. I basically took the whole summer off from NHL94 after kgman disgraced me by sweeping me in the first round of playoffs after I earned the number one seed in the west last season. The guy is inhumanly good, and out ahead of the pack. If my recent form of 13 straight league wins with 94 superheroes (Chicago) keeps up, I'd look forward to a potential finals matchup.
  16. Nice work. Glad to see someone liked the idea. I think there is a mistake though as currently there are two options for "both gens leagues," and no option for "both snes leagues." Also it may be helpful to have Gens or SNES exhibition status for people who couldn't get into the league but want to play people on specific systems.
  17. There seems to be a bit of confusion about who plays what version (Genesis of SNES). Would it be possible to add a "Preferred Version" note on profiles that would show like the "favorite way to score" info? Seems simple and logical enough. You could even add current participation info (such as GENS A) as well if it didn't make things too crowded over there.
  18. I remember playing with one of my friends who would always roast me with Bradley. TB is definitely a lot better than the other expansion teams in the game.
  19. Don't forget that different teams have different degrees of home ice advantage. For me, this season with Chicago my record at home is much better than on the road, which matches the game's rating of Chicago's home ice advantage as "high" (10-2 at home, 5-6 on road). Likewise, Hartford is listed as having a "low" home ice advantage and road ice disadvantage.
  20. Sounds like it could be fun. I'd give it a shot depending on the details.
  21. That is a pretty great idea. I like the Gretzky one, and being a Flyers fan, I think a Lindros equivalent could be pretty funny too.
  22. If you want to play NHL94 on the go, GP2X is the best choice. The emulation of the Genesis versions of the entire NHL series is near perfect all around. You can even get a TV-out adapter to enjoy the original 94 game or updated roms on the tv. http://gp2x.com/
  23. Is team registration published anywhere, or are all you guys just assuming who you got?
  24. Still got 7 games to cram in this week, but with a little luck I was hoping that I could best either or both of your league-best goals for and goals against records. Granted such a finish would put me on track for a first round match against the infamous kgman, which could prove to be quite a first round battle. EDIT: Well, after giving up 15 goals in two games to LA, it seems your goals against mark is safe!!
  25. I have run into a number of guys who claim to be really good at 94, but I usually beat them pretty bad. My one buddy though, the guy I always played on genesis the last few years, is every bit as good as I am, if not better.
