Anyone tried RetroArch?

Since I use it on my iPad I was wondering if anyone has tried netplay games with RetroArch? I bring this up because it is something in active development, which Kaillera is not.

I have been primarily using RetroArch for iOS as a tester of Sonic ROM hacks, so I won't be able to help out much on the topic of its rendition of Netplay.

One of the problems that I have noticed though with RetroArch is that running either the Genesis Plus GX or Picodrive core for select titles will not work for them.

Revision 024 of Sonic 02 Delta by Esrael, all versions of Blue Sphere Plus, and even certain titles with an SRAM have not been able to run on the emulator.

The emulator clearly is still unstable to me, so it might take a long time for both complete ROM compatibility, as well as Netplay to become fully accessible for us to use; I give them a few years to improve certain issues, I'm not expecting anything new at anytime soon.

No clue about netplay, but I use retroarch everyday on my Android phone. Playing old sports titles mostly. NES/Sega/Sony all from one little emu.

Anyone tried Retroarch and NHL 94 lately? Just installed and played one game against CPU. Would be interesting to try netplay with it.

Can someone put together a thread on where to get retroarch, what setup is necessary (as it doesn't seem straight-forward), and how to do netplay? Bonus marks for trying cross-platform netplay (e.g., connecting windows to mac or linux).

I can do some work on decoding the savestates.

I just downloaded RetroArch this weekend.  The startup is confusing at first, but this guide helped with the basics:  https://lifehacker.com/how-to-set-up-an-all-in-one-retro-game-emulator-with-re-1745863517.  While running RetroArch, select online updater, and then select the gaming system that you want to "update," i.e. download.  RetroArch will then install the latest versions of the supported emulators that you select, which are referred to as "cores."  Genesis Plus Gx and Picodrive are the two genesis options.  Both have been updated recently.  To start a game you have to "load core" (emulator), and then "load content" (rom) by accessing the directory where your rom is stored.

Netplay is intriguing because it supposedly uses a peer-to-peer setup with frame rollback similar to ggpo to reduce latency.

Here is more in-depth info on setting up netplay.  Bottom line, it should be compatible with Hamachi.  https://forums.libretro.com/t/looking-for-comprehensive-guide-on-netplay-willing-to-make-one-myself-if-none-exist/4523

Ha, it's good to be back! Looking forward to knocking off the rust.

You should check out the new chat server on Discord:

You don't absolutely have to sign up to Discord, I think you can still access the server by going to https://discordapp.com/invite/0por6zfp5RodSFVL

If people can get RetroArch work and the long distance emulation is good as well as is suggested by Scribe "Netplay is intriguing because it supposedly uses a peer-to-peer setup with frame rollback similar to ggpo to reduce latency. " then I'd be willing to play some games again. As I've stated in the past my main problem is Gens and how I've perceived drastical changes to my online experience by using different version of the emulator and the latency settings provided by it (you cannot actually know is the opponent using it), I have been vocal and transparent about it since finding it. This is the main reason why I am abstaining from playing at the moment or getting involved in NHL'94 scene. I do not want to lower the level of the gaming I can offer by going down back to default but I also cannot demand anyone else to make the necessary adaptations as rerecording also comes with an occasional graphical glitch. Using the settings only to my advantage or it being just for the few would not make me feel good about winning either.

A new emulator that has latency compensation built in and puts everyone to equal position would be ideal but as stated, problem would be the site and savestates.
