  1. I think "Terraonline Server" or something like that is good. I found it worked well for both east-coasters and west-coasters, so I think it should be even better for places in between. ms=milliseconds. 34ms is good. It's about 1/30th of a second, which is faster than the framerate of movies you see in theatres (1/24s; 42ms per frame). I find it starts to get bad around 70+. You could be right about the xbox live / apples to oranges thing, but it could also have actually been choppy anyway (that happens sometimes.. both players have good pings (ms), but it's still choppy).
  2. Lindros is way too fat for me (fat = easy to check). His shot is definitely better than Recchi's, but he needs to be standing up to use it : ) Hm, I don't think I ever noticed that. Could just be an emulator-dependent thing..
  3. I use one-timers a lot, so having Recchi's strong shot at C works better for me. Actually, I had both Recchi and Eklund in the GDL season 2. I usually played Recchi at C, but whenever I was having a tough time against an opponent, I'd put Eklund at C since he was faster and a better checker. Recchi could then be used for slapshots (especially useful against weak goalies).
  4. I took a look at the stats in my offline stats-tracking league and found these guys as the top non-default-starter scorers: 18: Stephane Lebeau (MTL) 22gp 31g 11a 42pts (replace Muller) 32: Denis Savard (MTL) 22gp 8g 25a 33pts (replace Bellows or Damphouse. may have actually played ~18 games) 42: Evgeni Davydov (WPG) 22gp 15g 15a 30pts (replace Steen) 46: Glenn Anderson (TOR) 22gp 15g 14a 29pts (replace Andreychuk (fatty)) 49: Mark Lamb (OTW) 23gp 16g 13a 29pts (replace Kudelski) 51: Valeri Zelepukin (NJ) 22gp 14g 14a 28pts (replace .. i forget. the C) 54: Joe Mullen (PIT) 23gp 15g 13a 28pts (replace Stephens. may have actually played ~18 games) 55: Terry Yake (HFD) 22gp 17g 10a 27pts (Replace Cassels. may have actually played ~15 games) 62: Perry Berezan (SJ0 22gp 12g 13a 25pts (Replace Garpenlov. may have actually played ~18 games) 67: Kevin Dineen (PHI) 23gp 11g 13a 24pts (replace lindros or brindamour, move to wing) 72: Craig Simpson (EDM) 22gp 11g 10a 21pts (replace weight. may have actually played ~15 games. leads league with 44% shooting %) 87: Nelson Emerson (STL) 23gp 11g 7a 18pts (replace anyone) 94: Christan Ruuttu (CHI) 23gp 5g 12a 17pts (replace goulet! more like 20gp)
  5. Yeah, I just take out Lindros: C: Recchi RW/LW: Dineen or Eklund depending on handedness preference Killer. I don't know what it is about these guys, but they really shift the shots-per-game balance in your favour.
  6. Agreed. Gilmour is the poor man's Roenick, and you don't even want to know what Roenick does between when the puck is dropped and when it hits the ice (but in case you did, he leaves your dog on his @ss, impregnates your whole team, and kicks your mom in the hooha).
  7. In my offline stats-enabled league (me and a buddy play every few days, using all the original teams), Jagr is an assist machine. He's tied with Gretzky for 2nd, with 24 assists in 23 games. Jagr has one of the best shooting percentages (41.1%), too, but doesn't take many shots. First in assists is, somewhat surprisingly, Denis Savard (who is also perhaps the worst shooter in our league with a 14.5% shooting %)
  8. Post your instant messenger name(s) and people will contact you through there. Most people here use AIM http://www.aim.com/ .
  9. I think he means once you get the puck, you can't pass it; you can only shoot it. Once the computer gets the puck, you have to be the goalie until the goalie gets the puck. Then you pass it to one of your guys, and he's not allowed to pass it, only shoot.. then they get the puck and you have to be the goalie.. etc
  10. I still have a Genesis & NHL94 and a SNES & NHL95. In my fourth year of university, I broke out the Genesis in my residence suite, and many hours of fierce nhl94 competition ensued.
  11. What about a hybrid? 1. Snake x rounds, then use the same order (worst-to-best) for the rest of the rounds. 2. Snake x rounds, then use worst-to-best order for 2-3 rounds, then snake the rest..
  12. You just make them up. It's all opinion. Thornton obviously gets 99 passing...
  13. My Dallas Stars handing the 25-0 St Louis Blues their first loss of the GDL season 2 was the highlight of my season
  14. I converted the all-caps text to lower case (many text editors have a feature to do this hidden somewhere). If you don't mind, you can do an edit of your post and copy/paste it in so people don't need to read the all-caps Cool stuff, there's a sim league around here, too.. http://oshlhockey.com/ But it seems to be down right now. ---------------------------- In 1992, when the `sega megadrive` was at it`s height in popularity there was a game available for it that i rented out of the local computer shop. it was called `ea hockey`. it was a popular game at the time and it still stands the test of time today. my first few games i obviously lost, but as i grew in confidence in playing i got better and better and better. it didn`t take me long to be a master of the game and soon i was unbeatable at it. but playing it wasn`t enough for me then as i started actually watching the computer play itself, and it actually played pretty good. so i decided to set up a organization called the `world hockey league` or w.h.l. and created a world championships for the teams to play in. the first championship had a qualifying round of 12 teams and the six winners went through to play in the first round of 4 groups of 4 teams. the winners and runners up was drawn into quarter-finals and the resultant winners, into the semi finals. the losers would play-off for third place while the winners would play in the final. the next world championships had 20 teams in 4 groups of five. over the years i enjoyed it so much i started setting up other competitions and soon it became a hobby of mine to watch and record the scores of the matches. the biggest step for me was to set up an entire season, covering several months in real time. this included an actual league set-up which comprised of 3 divisions; two divisions of 8 teams and one of 6, comprising the best teams at that time, playing both home and away; two cup competitions; the whl cup which is a knockout conpetition over two legs; the world cup which is another knockout competition but was only one game and a longer match; the whl european championships and the world championships ----------------------------
  15. http://oshlhockey.com/ isn't working! Is the Old School Hockey League done?
  16. You forget, logic and rationality have no place in a holy war!
  17. Looks like it was an amazing series. We really need to get the playoff games recorded.. Whenever I see Douge, I keep thinking, "dooj? who's that?" Dougie
  18. Scott Mellanby played last year. Don't know if he's playing this coming year, though.
  19. Offsides are a part of the game to avoid rampant cherry picking by human players. It's 8 seconds each time and will probably add about 10% downtime onto the length of the game. This is also why no one holds onto the puck with their goalie: it's just way too annoying. You could hound the other goalie to try to steal the pass or try to force a faceoff where you have a 50% chance of getting the puck back, but no one does it.. because the stoppages are too annoying! It doesn't take thinking to ward off an offside. It takes sitting around at the blueline waiting for your moron winger to leave the zone. And that's when you can even see that he went in offside, since he usually manages to do it way off near the boards where you can't see him. And you can't pass it to him, since half the time he still skates in ahead of the puck (though I think this is less of a problem on the SNES). I guess that leaves dump-and-chase. One aspect of offsides in the game that I like is that, even with offsides off, if the puck leaves the zone (even if you have control of it), all your guys leave the zone. So you do still need to respect the blueline, but just not when entering the zone initially. That's good enough for me. The AI is just too weak to make playing with offsides on fun. I think offsides could also reduce the advantage fast teams have over slow teams a little bit, which I think is a good thing. If you want an offsides-on league, make one, and maybe people will get used to it and like it. You're never going to convince anyone by just telling them offsides should be on. What about line changes? They're in the game, too, and actually require some added thought.
  20. Offsides are like TV commercials. I'm in no big hurry, but I'd much rather be watching the show.
  21. I'm sure the COMPUTER felt very bad. I run over innocent pedestrians in video games all the time.
  22. If you press left then right, left then right, repeatedly, I think the matchups change (the top team will be the same, but the bottom one will change). But there may only be 3-4 different matchups for each team. I.e., if you switch the home team to Toronto, and they're matched with St. Louis, I think you can hit left, then right, and the away team should change.
  23. I can't even do the cross crease. It feels like punching a girl; it's so wrong. Not to say that anyone who cross-creases punches girls as well. Still, I suppose it is a valid scoring method (however boring and distasteful). Considering that I missed the playoffs this season, maybe I should start punching gir -- i mean, cross creasing.
  24. Or maybe a mercy rule. You can still submit a game even if it's not done yet, so just save the state, submit it, and start the next game when one guy is up x many goals. 14-1 is a bit extreme, limiting him to just 3 shots. Who wants to play when the other guy has 3 times more goals as you have shots?
