  1. Every emblem except the Whalers is there.
No Ron Barr, but otherwise almost every screen looks the same.

Hartford is called the Hartford Canes in the game.
The NHL now has the TM for Whalers and the logo, but at the time (2006) they did not.

Ratings are the exact same for all the players just with phony names and numbers.
    Arena names are also missing.

Whalers still have Brass Bonanza as the music.
All the other music is accurate as well.

    Really cool.

Duke of 94 seems awesome to me, but will anyone else enter???

    Love the Auto Goalie!

Sadly, I am also almost 100% going to miss my first King of 94.
Or actually my first Duke of 94.

  3. So well done!

Thanks @kingraph @Evan @MikeGartner22 @chaos for running a great tourney and being all around awesome guys.

Always love seeing @IAmFleury'sHipCheck and enjoyed making him sweat in Game 1 of our Playoff Series 9vs24.

@superfan99 was great to meet and I was impressed with how he improved through the day.

@The Sauce was fun to meet and talk editing roms and rating players.  Also enjoyed playing some exis with him of my Original 6 roms and the classic rom.

@Lupz27 was excellent to meet in person and further demonstrates why the internet sucks.  Really good guy!

@corbettkb HOW COULD I EVER THANK YOU ENOUGH!  Putting me up in your awesome place in Brooklyn (I felt like I was in an episode of Seinfeld), Showing me the town on bicycle, by Subway, and walking across the Brooklyn Bridge.  Playing exis, and best of all the Yankees White Sox game on Sunday.

    Very Fun!

As usual I played poorly and seemed destined to be career minor leaguer when it comes to NHL 94.

But open invite to all my NYC and Chi-town buds mentioned above to come out and ski, run, bike, hike, kayak, raft, you name it in my mountain paradise home!

    * Random starting order vs pre-ranking
    * Modified swiss style round robin format, followed by elimination game.  The swiss style led to some amazing round 3,4,5 games!

    CONSIDERATIONS

    * Handling of no-shows.  Expected 1-2, did not expect 4.  Also expected more guests.

Best run tourney and format, that I have been to since King of 94 #1 in Toronto.

The no shows and the 1-0 forfeit victories would be my only complaint, but it was as well done and thought out as anyone could hope for.

    Good news/bad news

The bad news first -- unfortunately @IceStorm70 now has a work conflict and will not be able to attend the tournament.  Gotta pay the bills first!

The good news -- @IAmFleury'sHipCheck a.k.a EA WILL be attending the tournament as his paying job will conveniently place him in NYC next week!  Yay!

We are coming closer to the actual tournament day, can't wait, I'm excited.  This week I'll post a more about the structure, prizes and such.

Also, if you're in the NYC area and enjoy doing broadcast commentary, feel free to join us!  I'll be participating in the tournament and our resident celebrity broadcaster Arda Ocal (Emmy nominated!) will be in Milwaukee for another retro event.  Soooooo, open mic!

Awesome that EA @IAmFleury'sHipCheck is going to be there!

Thanks for putting this on @kingraph

Sorry, I don't mean to be a smartass but I'll just repost my initial question:
" The thing is that I've been playing this on Retroarch on my Android phone and having made it to the Stanley Cup, I was hoping to be able to take the save state and switch to Retroarch on my PC so I could finish this properly (if I win of course) on my TV, something I never once did on the cartridge. I'm being told by Retroarch people that an in-game save works across platforms but not save states. "

I have ONLY been playing until now with Save States not having seen any user records option in the V3 of the "tourney" ROM

Also, I have that SRM file. Retroarch won't acknowledge it on my PC. Gens on Android would be great, but as far as I can tell that doesn't exist.

Based on what you have said and experienced, it sounds like you can not make that change over.

Nobody has since looked into that issue or updated for a fix.

All good and true points by @kingraph except this I can tell you that it works just fine.

I do keep a back up of the roms I am using it on just in case as @wboy said it does corrupt something, but I have never had any issues.

I also thought that you meant it was not keeping your progress through the playoffs, which should work just fine.

  7. 11 minutes ago, tinpanalley said:

No no, I don't think you're understanding what I'm saying. The game, as originally released, permitted you to save your progress through a playoff. You entered in a username and it would track your playoff for you. I'm not talking about adding teams. That way you were able to resume your playoff on another day. What I'm asking is why isn't that in the modded ROMs? Obviously someone from the community at some point took that feature out. Why, is what I'm asking?

That does work typically  anyway with roms played on GENS or KEGA.
I am not sure why it isn't working for you or with this rom.
It works with all my Historic roms.

Best of all get an Everdrive and an Original Genesis play all these roms just like its 1994!

  8. Cool and Fun!:red_heart:

How did Dino lose to Chelios is the only opening round shocker.

Yzerman looks to have the easiest road to the Final 4 coming out of the Adams.
I can't see him not making it.

Roy/Bure winner in the Sweet 16 should come out of the Patrick.

Theo/Belfour in the Sweet 16 and Gilmour in the Elite 8 makes the Norris the toughest Division.

Mogilny/Roenick is a colossal Elite 8 Match-up with the winner taking it all.

    Yzerman/Bure/Belfour/Roenick are my Final 4

Roenick over Yzerman in the Final.

How do you vote in this?

Another piece of awesomeness brought to you by @kingraph

What if we just gave team numeric ratings (like your old ratings post),and said within 5 pts is pretty fair?

    numbers.png

So you'd take the ratings of the two team, add the relevant home or away value (although away value has less of an effect than home), and then you'd get a decent idea of the relative skills of the two teams.

(The team ratings in the image are the mathematically derived values from your old post. we'd need to agree on new values)

"Skillcap" is a bonus to deal with cases where a good player can get more out of a team.

-2, -1, or 0 is a poor way to think about away rating.
There really is no away rating just a Home Ice advantage that can range from a low of zero to high of 5.

This is being way over thought in my opinion.

Raphs first post was perfect.  It is just a guide.  We are all going to have some preferences, what I loved in the Original post was #1 how cool it looked gotta keep the logos, #2 The wealth of info, players Home away, #3 The simplicity.

There have been many rankings done for tournaments where we group teams into tiers, but something always felt off.  It was either too many tiers, not enough tiers, or the personal preferences around which teams on the fringe make it or not into a particular tier.  I am trying an updated method that doesn't group teams into tiers so rigidly, but rather offers a scale based on team.  Here's my first pass:

    Tournament Team List v01a.png

The idea is that you find a team and then a reasonable matchup will be any other team that shares the color tier.  So for example, a team like Quebec can play anyone from Boston (purple band) down to New York Rangers (brownish band).  Meanwhile, Chicago is just the top 4 teams.  This lends to more flexibility as all you have to do is add/drop a team from a band to adjust any unfair matchups instead of fencing them into a tier.

You can also assume the top teams in a band are stronger than the bottom.  So St. Louis vs New York Islanders, STL would be stronger, but that is still a reasonable matchup.  However, STL vs TOR, TOR would be the stronger matchup, but still reasonable.  TOR can't play NYI though.

I found this to be a pretty good exercise in that it will also give you a general team ranking.  Some teams are interchangeable that are only in one band (NYI/NJ/HFD/WSH), but it's really the fringe teams that make you think.

I included the rosters of main players, bolded the top 50ish, and added home/away advantages.  I think this can be printed as a good reference.

Having said all that, I've messed around with this enough and came to the point where my mind started turning into mush.  So I'm sharing it now with the group to get your input, see if it makes sense, see if I'm missing something, etc.  Thanks for taking the time to review.

:red_heart:How much can I love this post and chart!

I tried to make something like this for Vegas that did get passed out and used, but this is a major upgrade.

    Incredibly well done!

  11. I easily did both teams in primary colors using NOSE.

I have also done it in some Original 6 Roms.  It does look cool, but what I did was simple.

What you are asking for is much more work and complex.

All I did was change the uniforms in NOSE and make sure that I had no conflicts.  Red vs Red for example.

  12. Thanks for the responses and yes I could see where what you are saying is true, but I am basically using the same guys in either rom.

To me there seems to be something else and unknown element.

Anyway no big deal, as a side note the Historic/Retro players benefit from the Wt. Bug!

  13. I have been playing a ton of 94 on the Original Equipment.

Both against the computer and against Live competition.

I have found Classic roms to be far better/crazier/I am not sure of the word than WBF roms.

Anybody else feel that difference?  Agree?

Also as @Matt55 pointed out when playing the computer "big" guys will level you so the WBF is actually in effect.

  15. Here is a challenging fun way to play.

    Best of 7 Playoffs

Play with Line Changes Off, BUT.....

Game 1 Use SC1 for your team. #1 Goalie
Game 2 Use SC2 for your team. #2 Goalie
Game 3 Use CHK for your team. #1 Goalie
Game 4 Use whatever you want to create for a 4th line with what is left.  #2 Goalie.

If you lose a game, you must use the line that lost in Game 5, etc... until you win.
Every Line must win to advance.

Players not on one of the 4 Lines (Scratches) are waiting for an injury.
If a player is injured in any way they are OUT! and go to the back of this line.
Also if you have a 3rd goalie he would play with Line 4.

This is great work! I appreciate you posting your tests and results in such a clear and well written post.

The weight makes total sense, and remember, the weight bug only applies to human-controlled players.  So when the CPU controls the checking player, the heavier weight will be more effective.  It's a win-win for what you're looking for.

I like the notes on Aggression.  I would love to see a classic like league where we put everyone's aggression down to zero.  Then we can see over a many games if there are fewer penalties called overall.

    I agree.

It is along the lines of a project I am working on (making the computer more challenging) and I appreciate this greatly.

When playing the computer WBF roms are not really the best.

This and the zero goalie speed, etc... are great.

    Way to go @Matt55
