UPDATE 2022: This is suuuuuuuuuuuuuper outdated. These days the RetroArch emulator will save a .mkv video file for you if you hit the appropriate keyboard key to start/stop recording (I think it's the "Y" key). How to Make Game Movies UPDATE: Get the new recording emulator, gens re-recording (Gens11a.zip). The screenshots in this tutorial show an older version (Gens Movie 9.5b), but they are similar. This tutorial teaches you how to record a game played online and turn it into an AVI movie file. You can then upload the AVI file to YouTube if you want. How to add voice commentary may some day be covered. I've broken it down into a few sectio…

This tutorial will show you how to record a highlight clip in a game. It’s meant as a supplement to the “How to Make Game Movies” tutorial by smozoma. You should read that if you want to record entire games. Many thanks to smozoma for laying down the foundation for the following tutorial. The basics of recording a clip are: Create a savestate Load the savestate in gens11b Go to Instant Replay Record the Instant Replay (avi file) Convert the avi file (to .wmv in this tutorial) With this method, your highlight can only be as long as an instant replay (about 20 game seconds, or 7 real seconds). Two things you need before we start: First, you will need…

This tutorial will show you how to create a savestate from the GENS emulator for use in stat leagues. 1. First, you must make sure you are using the "gens-netplaysave" emulator, as the normal gens emulator does not allow savestate files to be created during online netplay. 2. At the end of the game, when the three stars of the game screen is up, press F5 to create the savestate file. You will see a notification on the bottom left of the emulator that says, "STATE 1 SAVED" (note: the state number can be any number from 0-9, explained later). This is what it looks like without the scoreboard in the way: 3. That's it! You've created the sa…

Hi all -- apologies if this has already been answered (I searched and couldn't find it), but I downloaded the genesis rom from this site and then installed it onto my genesis mini via Hakchi 2CE and I'm having an issue. The game loads up just fine, but controls don't work...not one button. Any idea what I can do here? Thanks so much for the help!

i suppose i could have just sent an e-mail to notify but its better to leave the message here so that others can check to see what version they may be using. the Gens Plus! (not to be mistaken for "Genesis Plus" without the explanation mark by Charles Mac Donald) emulator available in the download section is currently 0.0.3.39 but the latest version is 0.0.9.61. so unless its intentional that a previous version is available, the more recent version can be found here – zophar.net/genesis/gens-plus-.html

I want to play my games with a larger window, but I don't know how to fix this problem. Any suggestions? Also, if anyone knows any website that can help with these kinds of questions for Genesis emulators, I'd be very grateful. All I could find was either this site or the actual Gens website, which doesn't have a very extensive FAQ section, so...

So i have mentioned fightcade on here before. they now have a new beta for the fightcade 2 and it is AMAZING. primarily built for the fighting game community but it also has potential for any kind of game. a full collection of genesis games and snes games, among other systems is automatically downloadable. the reason this could be big for the nhl94 community is because it has the opportunity of being very user friendly allowing a single room to meet when looking for games and spectating. but the biggest thing is it has a run-ahead feature that makes the input delay practically nonexistent. in netplay emulation i have never experienced as smooth a gameplay experience an…

Our friends in Russia are using this emulator to play their games. I played against them and it's pretty simple to use and set up. Given we were so far away, there was input lag, but the emulator itself worked great. It also has chat feature in game (like ZSNES) which is nice This is the version they are using so download it here: Mednafen 0.9.39.2.zip I don't have time to go through setups, will have to save that for another time. Basically you can load Sega Genesis, configure your controller, add your ROMS folder and you're off and running. I don't remember the netplay option right now, but it was pretty quick when I played. Sorry for the lack of …

Against certain opponents, my FPS will drop to 10 and my ping will shoot up to 200-250 randomly during the netplay session. When the netplay client is paused or the game is dropped, my ping returns to normal. Does anyone know what this is?

Fightcade is basically a match-making program, a lobby for fight game enthusiasts. On the backend it uses an emulator called FBA, which was designed to run MAME games (actual ports of arcade games). It also uses a different technology to play P2P (GGPO), one that is supposed to be easier to set-up (no issues with routers, and no need to port forward). Recently it has been updated/upgraded to Fightcade 2, which promises many enhancements, specifically the addition of Sega Genesis emulation. On the reddit page for this project (it is in BETA as of Oct 27), I found a copy of the supported roms. NHLPA93, NHL 94-98 were all there, not to mention NBA Jam, Madden …

So, for people who do not know what fightcade is, here is the google definition of it.. "Fightcade is a matchmaking client that includes an emulator and allows people to play each other online using the very well respected GGPO netcode. ... GGPO used to be a service like Fightcade, but now it is just a great rollback netcode." Its a goto for people who want to play classic arcade games (i.e. street fighter, kof, mvc, metal slug) on their pc. Its not unlike kaillera but has one major advantage, its netcode. Kaillera uses a delay based netcode where as fightcade uses a "rollback" type netcode. I can say from years of experience this "rollback netcode" aka GGPO is a MUC…

This version of Gens emulator did not have it's own thread so it might be lost for MANY. If you are not aware, there is another version of the Gens emulator that is found on the site package. This is a Gens emulator that has much more options for recording movies and still has the very same netplaysave options that the basic one downloaded from the site nhl94online.com. What this Gens does have is the ability to change settings from Graphics menu -> Latency compensation You need to be aware that this can be of great help to balance your gaming out. It has been around for quite some time so several might have been able to take advantage of it and as it is…

I've used Wine (WineBottler) in the past for a "must have" PC program on my mac. So I just "bottled" up GENS and it seems to run ok. Should work with Hamachi for MAC...but to be proven. Like someone else mentioned (I think I saw it somewhere)...the graphics only seem to work well in Full Screen...otherwise side by side. Not sure if that is GENS or my "GensBottled".app (i.e. due to the "bottling"). But seems ok in full screen mode (No NetPlay test as yet). Pretty light weight way to get PC GENS running. Will advise on NetPlay.

Ok, so many people have mentioned recording video, and then analyzing the games. This makes a lot of sense. So how do I do it? I (usually) use the old Kaillera, and I see a checkbox that says "Record Game". To test things out I checked it. Played a game. Now I expected to see a huge video file in the same directory as Kaillera (my main Gens folder). Nope. So I looked in Documents/Video (I use Win7). Nothing there either.... Where is the video stored from the old Kaillera? And what do I have to do to make this work? Any help much appreciated...

I see that Kega Fusion, the Genesis emulator I am running on my mac, supports Netplay. My question is...in order to play people online, am i only able to play other users with Kega Fusion? Has anyone tried Netplay on Kega Fusion, specifically NHL '94? Can I play people that use PC and not Mac? Any answers would be greatly appreciated.
