Where Should the Next Kof94 Be? (Choose 2 Places)

40 members have voted

  1. 1. Where should the next King of 94 -- or another big tourney -- be located? Please pick 1 or 2 places, but not more.

Edit 2: It has been decided: Vancouver is officially hosting.
Edit 1: Oct 19 added Green Bay, Vancouver and Minneapolis,

What city should host the next big event?  Please choose 2, so people don't just choose their own city! :)

I chose Original 6 cities, and threw in Ottawa for good measure.

I do feel that the next big event should be in the Northeast USA area, or close by in Canada.

Disclaimer: I have no say in, nor inkling regarding, where the next one will be, and am not sure who would decide? (Maybe Halifax decides?) I do think the next one won't be driven by Mikey or his doc, but I could be wrong there, too. :P Bottom line, this is just a fun "thought experiment".

I like 'em all except Ottawa.  What's the criteria for choosing a city?

My criteria for choosing those in the poll?  Or the criteria for each user choosing?

My criteria was selecting cities I thought would have a good draw, that had good hockey followings (original 6)... As for each user choosing a couple, that is up to them entirely. You  never know what motivates people. :)

I choose NYC, and Other which is just about 90 miles north of NYC. the brand new soon to open (March 1st, 2018) Empire Resorts Catskills which will be the largest Vegas style Casino  outside of Las Vegas, and is relatively close driving distance from West NY, and all of New England.

I think that should count at 2 NYC's, but that is ok. ;)

Well considering it is almost as far from NYC as Philly is, and it is easier to get to then NYC for all the North, North west, and North East players, and would be a much cheaper stay then NYC hotels.

Can't believe Toronto and Montreal are ahead right now?  Is this all Canucks skewing the poll? (I live in Toronto but I think I would prefer Montreal! Definitely the most "foreign" place, IMO.)

I would go to any of these cities, though.  Don't think I would have another Vegas or West Coast site in me...

Finland would be cool!  And I would go -- if I knew it was going to be well attended.  But after seeing Vegas have a mediocre draw, I think Finland would be 5 Finnish dudes and 3 or 4 guys from the forum. ;)

I think we have to go where the numbers are; where most of the community is.  That is, in the U.S. or Canada, no further west than Chicago, and no further east than Boston.  The vast majority of our "regulars" are guys in the Northeast.

Secondary to where our regulars are, is the city itself.  It should be well populated, and being a hockey city helps, too.  I know for Toronto, if there was enough notice given, I bet you could get over 200 participants.  Everyone male I know between 35 and 45 years old (and a few outliers) is familiar with this game.  When it was in Toronto 2 years ago, I think over half of the entrants were local.  In Vegas, there was 1 dude.  And the Toronto tourney had 2 months notice.

Whatever the city, as long as it is one of the ones listed above (besides Ottawa -- I just put that there for fun and cuz there are a lot of guys here from there), if we put up some posters, gave flyers to the Retro Gaming stores, maybe took out an ad or 2, it could be huge. (Not that it needs to be huge, but the bigger it is, the more recruits to our community.  Once we figure that part out. ;) )

Minnesota!

My two cents

  • If you want to get the biggest turn out.  Maybe we do one of those member maps things and see where everyone is located and pick the location you can get the most people that could make a road trip out of it.  Lot easier to get away for the weekend without a plane ticket. Not to keep bringing up Tecmo, but the big event stays in Madison every year because they get a ton of locals.  Need locals to get the number up.

  • But Sometimes bigger isn't always better.  I'd say take your core group of buds that will travel and pick an awesome city with a NHL game playing that weekend and any extra locals that show up is just cherry on top.

I chose Boston because I live here and it's a great city. You'd all probably love it.

2nd choice would be Montreal.

@Lupz27 - that Catskills casino will be bigger than Foxwoods in CT then? Sounds like an interesting option.

Your MTL vote didn't register? (You can vote as many times as you like...)

Actually many commenters here did not get a votes in? (Yourself, Smozoma, Plabax, Clockwise among others...)

Just now voted for TOR and MTL. Because I'm cheap and the exchange rate is rough these days.

I suppose we could do an Olympics-style run-off vote at some point (city with fewest votes eliminated, re-vote, new last-place city eliminated, and so on until 1 city left)

I had a thought a while back about having it at madison wisconsin, during their tecmo madison tournament, but there's probably more negatives than positives.

positives

-they'll already have tons of crts we could connect to. we'd likely we'd have to wait until late afternoon before crts became available(once they start needing less stations after guys are eliminated) but we could get a lot of setups in place.

-already have set up for the big screen, streaming.

-might have some run off from players eliminated from the tecmo tourney willing to play (working on amending the tournament a bit to accommodate new (and weaker) players, i'll post more on this at a later date)

-relatively central location for people to get to

-you can play in other tournaments as part of your weekend (nba jam or nhl95 the night before, and TSB). Im working on having a 2 on 2 tourney as part of the next Ko94....playing that 2 on 2 cart is just something everyone needs to be  a part of.

negatives

-they may not want us there ( I have not proposed this idea to the tecmo madison organizers)  - they may feel it would be too chaotic - too many people for the venue.

-they already have a hockey tournament the night before, nhl95  which is organized by our best bud segathon. may not want a second hockey video game tournament there.

-there's already a king of 94 wisconsin (wouldn't want to negatively impact this tournament in anyway, troy's a great bud)

-we'd start late in the day and end late (probably sometime after midnight) or we'd have to roll this over two days, saturday evening and sunday morning

-no nhl team, not sure what else there is to do there for a fun group sporting event? I would've said college hockey but it's over when this tournament starts.

just an additional thought.

I think Toronto is great because there's proven local interest for both systems and tons of flights. Chicago also has the flights option and is more central. Nothing wrong with going back to Toronto.

I'd be willing to help setup/arrange a Chicago tourney, because of the central location/ cheaper air tickets, I'd think we'd find it easier to land more people.

I'd also be willing to find my way to New York if it came to that.

I'd also prefer something like around February before the family spring break stuff hits everyone's schedule.   I do recall something about a Green Bay tourney scheduled around then though, so I wouldn't want to interfere there, but I think more buds show up for a Chicago tourney to be honest.
